Season 1 Warlords it was really bad, i'm hoping to try it again soon though.

Exactly.. Ret Mage RDruid is an okay substitute for Ret Hunter, but no druid or mage will want to run that when they could get a rogue and be +300 rating. It also works well with Arcane. There are guaranteed sheeps every hoj because of evanescence. The comp is actually powerful in certain matchups.

Ret DK and Ret Hunter are your best bets. Hunters are pretty weak right now, so Ret DK is actually better in some matchups.

I tried Ret/Enh and Ret/Feral this season but it felt really outclassed by other cleaves like Turbo and WW/DK.

Making the Ret sac dispel separate from Hand of Sacrifice. Making it its own 1 minute CD ability that isn't affected by clemency.

No purge spam meta, have purges be less rng to rewarding when making plays but punishing when used at incorrect times. I always thought it'd be cool if it were a channel spell that if it finished it would remove all buffs with a cooldown and resource cost.

Buff dead and useless talents to make them a real choice.

PvP rewards like BC 310% flying. Enchant mogs are sort of a step in the right direction but it's too minor to spark interest in PvP when people can PvE for easier and better rewards.

Legion pvp talent system delivering on its promises

Less time spent making pvp theme parks like Ashran, more on making Arenas/RBGs interesting and rewarding. Imagine if they spent all the resources they spent on Ashran into making unique arenas with different meta play with real rewards. #nagrandtornados #RoV

One of my favourite arena memories was Hojing someone in the RoV fire for a clutch kill. Many tears are going to come from the haters but it was awesome. Much more interesting than systematic matchups and knowing you're going to lose vs a counter.

Just fyi, the second point in your post is completely wrong and a lot of the first is inaccurate and given appropriate context is also false.. for the most part. (you're right about popular players getting more say and influence).

Most of the disappointment from WoD PvP comes from ability pruning which was Blizzard Activision's design direction for the expansion, with further disappointment attributed to: bugs/exploits, server issues (KT lag, instance aborted, relog queue bug since wotlk) and neglect (Current state of Disc/Ret/Ele/(Previously)WW and (Previously)Warlock/RMD being blatantly OP etc.). Issues should have been addressed in a weekly MINOR balance tweak to be repeated if there still needed adjustments, not obliterating a class in one fell swoop too early (how Ret/Disc was dealt with) or too late (how Warlocks/HPal/BM was dealt with). And stale arena rewards/incentives.

A large majority of these points are being addressed by the PvP talent system which gives Blizzard tuning nobs for individual class balance and adds some of the depth removed from pruning. We've been asking for changes like this forever and Holinka has been listening. He's Blizzard's face for the PvP community and as result gets the brunt of the blame, and in now way is he perfect but there's no doubt recent changes that have been implemented have been good that aren't given credit.. such as:

Separation of PvE/PvP balance, answer to pruning (Legion)
Gear making a very small difference (ilvl scaling, future Legion changes to PvP gear)
No PvE gear in PvP. No more legendary weapon bullshit seasons.
Cross faction Arena
Tournament changes ranging from spectator mode to 4 man rosters
Cracking down on cheating
Conquest catch up

A note about blaming Beta players.. did you consider very few of the top PvPers were actually given early enough Beta access? I had my friend go to the cinematic reveal in Cali to get Beta keys meanwhile 100's were given out to streamers that were essentially wasted. That means there was a very poor selection about who was given the opportunity to participate and provide feedback. Did you consider that the handful of players that were selected gave tons of constructive reports, posts and feedback to have it ignored? Here's a bold one:

Did you consider Beta was actually fucking amazing and live game was a huge disappointment? In my experience in Beta (fighting REAL teams in wargames, EU included, not just skrimishes) it was incredibly hard to kill an opponent or healer through damage, every kill was landed through setup. Turbo training a Disc with purge spam didn't accomplish anything. Comps like Boomkin/Warlock + Rogue were powerful. Caster melee was a thing. Wizard cleaves weren't a thing for the most part, only the best godcomps were successful. It needed some tuning for sure, like gutting combat, maybe making it a little faster paced but for the most part it was a really enjoyable PvP experience (inb4 Ret bias etc.). For a couple months I enjoyed some arena where I could actually play my character and kills were landed in setup and where disrupting setup meant you were going to live.

tl;dr Not all Holinka's fault and he was a part of many good changes amongst the bad, and don't blame the few relevant testers for the shitshow that is this current season because almost nothing is the same, and EVERYBODY (pvp wise) rallied against pruning and oversimplification but that wasn't changed.

Coming from someone playing a lot of Mage lately and not a salty Ret:

Buff Frostbolt damage, gut Ice Nova damage. Cooldown on Pet Nova reduced to 15 seconds, it no longer generates FoF. Buff FoF generation from Frostbolt to 25%. Design it somehow so directly following a Frostbolt, icelance won't consume fingers on a frozen target allowing shatters again. In addition, Ice Lance should do good damage if casted on any nova'd/forzen target, not just from FoF. Remove the ridiculous FoF Icelance bonus and make it baseline in IL.

All CC on Arcane tree.

Haste no longer affects CC casts. Baseline casted speeds back to 1.5 from 1.7

Deep freeze glyph can fuk off

Gut Flameglow, buff Ice Barrier and give it a Temporal Shield mechanism.

Encourage Icy Floes to land CC instead of blink blazing speed deep spam 2 cc schools. The current status really doesn't punish poor positioning in any way whatsoever. It really does not matter how far the healer is standing if I have deep, blink and blazing speed. He's going to get CC'd.

It should be that if you're leaving the Mage alone letting him churn out Frostbolts he's gonna fuck you up like in WotLK, not that every 30 seconds he's going to have 350k worth of guaranteed instant damage and guaranteed CC. Getting out shatter combos in your cross CC windows should award the current gooberfuck instant damage that exists right now. It'd be more fair for a Frostbolt + IL to deal current Ice Nova damage with a shatter.

Icenova can be used as a finisher, to setup a shatter or to get deeps off as a ranged nova instead of it solely being used for damage. Increase the root to 3 sec, make it a physical debuff so it can't be spam dispelled. Different DR.

edit: Don't expect these to be hotfixes but i'd like to see Frost Mage revolving around shatters and cross plays rather than an all-in-one instant damage nearly unstoppable CC lord that doesn't do anything outside of those windows in Legion. You can't really touch spell steal right now despite it being retarded vs some classes. I believe the entire dispel system needs to be looked at.

In what way ? Can't exactly death CC when getting deeped/cheapshotted/cycloned beforehand, and Disc healing mechanics aren't exactly superior to Druid's. PreHOTs are much more valuable than a single shield. I'll admit guise is good.

Also, Ironbark on 1 min CD compared to PS ? Lol

The only good part that would help vs RMD would be psyhic scream

Historically, any hunter priest x like Ret Hunter Priest and Jungle murdered RMD

Lifegrips, Burst healing via saving grace, Deaths (Holy fires), Offensive Dispels, Mass Dispel, Feathers + Guise, even the silence are all extremely powerful tools vs RMD.

It's a little hard to explain unless you've played a lot of Priest/Hunter comps into Mages, but if you say fear rogue, trap healer and create a 3v1, it's no longer as simple as just trading block for it all and come out at 60% like it is with any other healer.

You get more defensives in return, they are much squishier with the fear/risk of getting MD'd. You're either on the offense or using defensives on their setups.

In MoP, Ret Hunt Shaman had struggles vs RMD but Priest variant destroyed it. It was one of the few, if not the only matchup where we had room for error.

Right now Ret Hunter RSham shouldn't beat RMD but it has a decent enough chance if mistakes are made on the RMDs end. Like it's 60-40 or 65-35 if players are equally skilled. If priests were powerful, i'd say they might even have a decent advantage against it. Jungle would probably do very well too.

Besides Priest/Hunter comps.. maybe just RMP like you mentioned

Essentially, in short, the tools a priest can bring change the way the matchup is played in a way that it's not as simple as saying "Ironbark>PS therefore druid". The fact that a priest is present even in a shitty state changes the way the matchup is played, and if priests were capable of healing damage like every other healer is right now I don't think RMD would be as dominate.

edit: tl;dr basically you can win the game in 30 seconds with Priest Hunter X where as with other healers it guarantees to last much longer, and the fact that it can end in 30 seconds usually forces different/more defensives out so priests change the way the game is played against mage rogue teams. "Wings i'll block and wait them out" is now "Wings i'll block, jk MD i'm dead" so instead druid trinkets and uses his CDs and makes him susceptible to dying kind of thing.
