#3767509 What does it take to become a gladiator?

Posted Smax on 13 September 2012 - 02:08 PM

Hello, I'm Gladiator Smax. I'll do my best to answer your questsions in the order you asked them.

1. I think being successful on this game is a combination of two fundamental attributes, knowledge and skill.
You will need to know:
  • Every class in the game inside out. This way you can anticipate an opponents next move in order to throw in a counter. As a Holy Paladin, I have an ability with makes me immune to silences for 6 seconds. Because I know Rogues, I know that if they use Vanish, it's either because they want to Garrote (silence) me from stealth. I've stopped myself and my partners from suffering a Garrote countless times this way. And it's only because I know Rogues inside out.
  • The layout of the arenas. Know which points give LoS and which don't. Communicate positioning strategies with your partners. For example, on Blades Edge Arena, standing on the edge of the bridge you can stop a Rogue getting to your back.
  • How to keybind. Keybindings are essential if you're going to get anywhere in PvP. Have every single one of your abilites bound to your keyboard and mouse buttons.
  • How to customise your UI. For me, this played a huge part in getting Gladiator. Since starting Holy Paladin in S9, my UI changed somehow at least every week. Sometimes, a small configuration change to an existing addon and sometimes a whole new addon! Keep changing your UI until it's perfect for you. There are thousands of addons you can use!
  • How MMR and the ladders work. There's a lot of information on here and WoW's site about this. Make sure you understand the MMR system and how the ladders work with regards to disqualifications and such.
You will need the ability to:
  • Use your keybinds effectively. Make sure you know all of your keybinds without fail. Make sure they're in an easy spot to reach aswell.
  • Anticipate your opponents next move. This is the result of knowing all the classes. There's a good addon to help with anticipation called SpellAlerter. It alerts you of any spells that are cast by your enemies. You can choose which abilities it alerts you about.
  • Communicate successfully with your partners. Keep calm whilst speaking on Skype. Make sure you don't rage or whine. It's important to keep morale up! If you lose a game, don't start blaming. Simply discuss a better strategy with your partners. Also, whilst in arena, make sure you only call out things that are necessary. Remember, whilst in arena, your partners aren't interested in when you are using Steady Shot or how much you hate Mages!
  • Position yourself effectively. Positioning is key! Don't make yourself vulnerable by standing in LoS all day. Use LoS to your advantage and don't LoS/range your healer.
  • Manage your cooldowns effectively. I see so many Holy Paladins who use Avenging Wrath and Divine Favor in the same macro. Hell, I used to do it too! Use your CDs well, don't waste but don't save!
2. I've never played a Hunter so I'm not 100% on this. I think you should talk about when and who you will Scattertrap (Scatter Shot into a launched Freezing Trap). Call out Silencing Shot and Rapid Fire too. Basically, you need to call out your CC, CDs, vulnerabilities in your opponent and when you really need help/peals.

3. Determination. Everyone has the potential to be great! You just have to dedicate your time and effort with a constant belief that you can do it! The more and harder you play, the better you'll become!

4. My first 2 months of PvP started in S9 (First season of Cataclysm). This was when I first decided to try and become great! I got fully keybinded and transferred to my friend's server where I played to 2066 as Rogue/Warrior/H.Paladin

5. That depends entirely on the player. Some people learn fast, others slow. Some are stupid, some are smart. I agree with what Atxx says about goals. This is a very important process of improvement. Don't start thinking about Gladiator just yet. Achieve the achievable first.

Regards,
Smax :paladin:

#3739817 DWi Gaming - Professional eSports Community | High Quality PUG Groups Always...

DWi is an elite community formed by players who have already proven
that they are capable of obtaining top rankings in a competitive
atmosphere
. Our goal is to form a world-class eSports

community that prides itself on individual skill

over numbers.

Looking for a home that you can just login whenever you want and get into a good tournament group? Put in an application, this is the only place like that in the game.

Website: www.dwigaming.com

Community Forum: www.sPvP.org

Ingame Server: Northern Shiverpeaks

Contact: [email protected]

Our Background -

Deal With it was conceptualized by a small group of players who competed in World of Warcraft arena at the highest level. After seeing the potential that Guild Wars 2 has as an eSports title, DWi has opened its doors and expanded its involvement from simply being a team to becoming a foundation stone for the Guild Wars 2 Structured PvP community. Together, we seek to be the premier Structured PvP guild and informational resource in Guild Wars 2. Our aim with recruitment is to maintain to a small, tight-knit group of serious, competitive and passionate players that constantly strive for excellence and are capable of becoming the best players in the world.

In total, our community currently has over 20 Rank 1 titles, and over 100 Gladiator titles within our roster. Our belief is that the many of the skills that our members were able to develop over the years with WoW will greatly benefit us in Guild Wars 2. We aim to be a small, tight-knit community that is full of many top SPvP teams in the world. However, most importantly, we're here to have a good time.

Our Goals -

The core ideology behind the DWi brand is to become synonymous with top level Guild Wars 2 gameplay. Obtaining sponsorship is one of the many important steps we will be taking to build revenue for the guild. Our goal is to compensate our members for everything they write, record and stream for DWi. Additionally, we envision our affiliate website, SPvP.org, as a conduit for the competitive SPvP scene, where players can read and submit accurate content and promote valuable discussion for the benefit of the community as a whole. As such, we are looking for people who are comfortable writing guides, creating videos, streaming on twitch.tv and generating original, precise and thoughtful content that is of unparalleled quality. This is not an official requirement for our members, but exemplifying this is one way potential applicants can get ahead.

Structured PvP is the primary in-game focus of DWi. Our core members are expected to maintain top glory ranks and participate in tournament games with the guild. Every core member should constantly practice, do research on their profession and make every attempt to optimize their gameplay. Multi-profession play is encouraged in order to more intimately understand the strengths and weaknesses of each profession and how they function in Structured PvP. Involvement in World vs. World and PvE is optional. For those interested in World vs World, our guild is part of the Ascension Alliance and will dominate World vs. World with twelve other organized guilds.

Requirements -

  • Can prove that you're a high skill caliber player of a competitive game. (E.g. WoW, Dota, LoL, HoN, Counterstrike) - Note: If you can't prove this, we will have trial slots open for those who just want to be given a chance.
  • At least 16 years of age or older
  • Able to maintain composure (no ragers)
  • Able to associate with others professionally (This is a big one, we don't want trolls in our community. We plan to have sponsors, and we can't risk having someone who is going to represent us poorly.)
  • Can communicate via Voice Chat (Not looking for someone who isn't comfortable speaking. We need team players who are going to be reactive)
  • Friendly, Mature, Reliable - All traits were looking for
  • Have read and agree to the requirements listed in the Guild Charter

Guild wars 2 is going to be sick, it'll be the game that finnishes warcraft off, not like none of you aion or rift pish.

edit: best gw2 guild http://www.teamparadigm.net/

i don't understand when people say shit like this

you think people who have been playing warcraft for multiple years are just going to leave everything they have behind?
years of playing their characters, friends, and whatever else they might have.

no matter how shitty or bad a game might get, people will stick around. a perfect example is the people who play wow still to play with their friends. I can guarantee you know a person like that

warcraft will 'die' when blizzard decides they want it to

guild wars looks sick, dont get me wrong. but you gotta realize that were the pvp community

WE ARE THE 1 FUCKING %

#3040358 [ADDON] Juked

Posted robrman on 04 February 2011 - 01:29 AM

Juked has ~50 cooldowns being tracked on the main bar and an optional priority bar where higher priority spells are displayed(interrupts by default).

-Fixed scaling(v1.1.4)
-Fixed test(v1.1.3)
-Fixed prio bar locking(v1.1.3)
-Fixed test(v1.1.3)
-Added a fix for some versions of omniCC(Thanks Bc for testing)(v1.1.6)
-Fixed Rebuke spell ID(v1.1.6)
-Can now be accessed from /juked   /jd   and   /ib(kept this cause i kept typing it by accident)(v1.1.6)
-Added the option to grow the bars upward from the anchor (1.1.6)
-Spell priorities(v1.1.1)
-Most relevant arena cooldowns tracked
-Added "Smart" mode which only displays cooldowns once they've been used, in the order they were used.  If used with Hidden mode, they realign to the anchor.

How to:
Set number of columns for bar 1 (main bar) to 5
/juked cols 1 5

Set number of columns for bar 2 (prio bar) to 12
/juked cols 2 12

Put all cooldowns on one line for bar 1(main bar)
/juked cols 1 0

If you think something else should be added to the how to command examples, post in comments.

The image should explain how the different modes work.
My suggestions:
Hidden on + Smart on for BGs
Hidden off + Smart on for Arenas

Adding spells yourself is fairly straightforward, just edit the lua file.
I've spaced it out to one spell per line, should make it easier for most people to modify. It is not currently possible(to my knowledge) to track Smoke bomb as it does not cause a combat log event.  I'll add it if/when I find a viable way of tracking it.

Tested by Robrman and Lexk but there may still be bugs.  If you find any, just post in the comments and I'll fix them.
Inspired by Kollektiv's InterruptBar.
