I've played all of TBC, WoTLK, played first half of S9, renewed a bit for last half of S11, bought MoP and played 1 week of S12, and playing now since start of S15.

All of those times I was moderately to highly successful, and I can without a doubt in my mind say that S2, S3, S7 and S8 were the best periods this game ever had. People are also saying that S10 was very good, but from what I've heard ( people abusing MMR like retards to stay at ratings nobody could even imagine of attaining after MMR's were reset ( I was given Sai as an example ) ), it wasn't all that great.

PvP was just better because the core of PvP is the community, and community was a lot less fragmented back then, and a lot more people knew each other. Right know only the people at the top communicate with each other and resemble anything similar of a community that once existed, whereas back in the day even the top PvPers couldn't be assholes because they were a part of a server community.

Also the drama was a lot better, and on the plus side, everyone knew who those crappy players were who got their r1's from 5s. ( I remember a really crap priest on Rampage getting r1 in 5s then being farmed in 3s by Duelist teams, fun times ).

( which is not to say that I don't enjoy the game currently - it's simply different than it used to be, sure, worse in some areas, sure, better in some areas, but overall different - and yeah I consider most of new players to not be extremely skilled at some areas in which older players were, but Blizzard is there to be thanked for that, for removing some crucial components that were once required to win, and now needed once every 100 games simply because everything got simplified )

WotLK was the best by far I think for arena, specifically s7/s8. There will never be balance in the game but I would say that s7/s8 was the best we're gonna see regarding fun/skill and with such a huge variety of comps and fast paced play, people even spammed 2s even though you couldn't get a title in those seasons (and took it seriously).

As for MoP, there is retarded stuff as always and it's debateable if it's worse than any other season or whatever. The good thing is though, is that you can change talents/glyphs in the prep area so it's way less RNG of what you queue into and has lowered the gap between the possibility of beating counters or not --- this is the best change ever to arena I think.

As for the OP, I agree at how insanely stupid thug is atm they can make 10 mistakes a second and win on high rating. But there are always insanely easy comps to play like this!

Most people don't really consider s5/early s6 to be apart of the same expansion though. Everyone knows how bad those were. When people say they miss/missed wotlk, they are 95% of the time referring to s7/s8. An interesting thing to note about those two seasons is that there was a ton of broken stuff, and while stuff was skewed since this is wow pvp we are talking about, the bullshit kind of dealt with the other bullshit. S7 I would actually argue was about the closest to "the epitome of skill" that this game has ever reached.

Not sure what you played in Wotlk, but there were plenty of times where you felt helpless against certain comps (at least I know that was the case if you weren't a Wizard).

Playing with a Prot Warrior was pretty much the only time that I felt strong against wizard cleaves in Wrath. Every other time was an uphill battle, and any mistake (ex. 1 CC landed on my healer without a trinket up and I'm not already behind a pillar) resulted in an almost guaranteed loss. Particularly against wizard teams that didn't have a mage.

Without the absurdity of Prot Warriors being viable in 3's, the expansion would have been pretty damn awful near the end. And you just have to look at all the LAN tournaments that were played after coL.Black fell off to see a perfect example. Nothing but casters vs. casters.
I don't play mop, so sorry if I implied that I did. I was speaking purely from playing cata where a lot of teams suffered heavily from next to impossible matchups, especially with the introduction of triple dps. Kind of weird how you talk about how bad the hypothetical end game of wotlk would have been considering wotlk ran unpatched in s8 for an insanely long time. There was a ton of development and adapting during that period. My bias and inexperience in mop shows, but it seems like from just watching streams, I can tell how much positioning has lost its value. That was my main problem with cata, and it seems only amplified in mop. Positioning used to ALWAYS be a do or die thing throughout wotlk. I'm seeing a lot more teams just sitting in the middle of the map chucking shit. I liked the fast pace style of wotlk. It made the game always engaging and chaotic. The lack of homogenization pre cata was also really nice. You really have to expect these large differences in opinions though with a ridiculous system overhaul like the core changes in pvp from wotlk/early cata to post s9.
