#4091359 Where have all the rogues gone?

Rogues aren't fun anymore to play. I know when the stars align i can put out ridiculous damage but when it comes to arenas in order to be successful as a rogue it demands so much synergy to be successful.  Its to the point that it's exhausting to get a win even vs the worst teams.

Also, I've been saying it for a long time but whenever you hit seasons where Hunters or Ferals are the most played class you'll see less and less of rogues playing. I know when I enter an arena and I see a team make a gauntlet with flares and AoE spam in a tight corner to prevent the rogue opener I laugh. It makes rogue openers inconsistent and its often unreliable to have a good opener strategy when there are so many targetable AoEs to put a rogue's team in combat.

Rogue gameplay is second nature for me and I'm sure its the same for plenty of other players who have been playing since BC/Wrath.  I am constantly asked how to do simple things like "how to open for good burst" and it leads me to believe that rogue gameplay, in order to be successful, needs to take advantage of every global properly otherwise they will fail immensely and thats too much of a learning curve for a new player. Regardless of how much damage rogues can potentially do I think they have the biggest gap between a new player and a skill capped player. The reason there are so few rogues playing is because its exhausting and requires so much setup to win against teams that are hundreds of MMR lower than you compared to other classes. The gameplay is stale and easily countered.  The entirety of an arena match as a rogue is determined in the first 20 seconds of an arena and thats not fun / too hard to recover from a mistake.  I think the biggest reason rogue population is so low is because rogues look fun on paper/stream but they immediately turn a player away when they see how much setup it takes vs playing another class to actually be successful.

The other part of this is a rogue requires "skill-capped" and knowledgeable teammates that fully understand the rogue.  His/her strengths/weaknesses and burst windows.  Why would a hunter want to worry about lining everything up with a rogue when he can just face roll with a warrior and spam random instant cc?

#4081927 Rupture or not to rupture?

Is expose armor still worth applying?

Expose armor is now (I believe) our cheapest combo point builder. While sub isn't exactly combo point starved I really like to keep my energy reasonably high outside of obvious burst windows so often use it as a filler if I'm at 4 combo points or when I'm just pve-ing on someone until there's a burst opportunity.

If you're not playing with anyone that applies the debuff (which you probably aren't unless you play with a warrior who has sunder bound or a hunter with a certain pet)  then you should be trying to get expose armor up on opponents. The debuff lasts quite long so you don't have to worry about spamming it, just get it up to 3 stacks and consider refreshing it (you only have to press it once to refresh the 3 stacks) when you can.

Against shamans, priests, mail users and other classes that have quite a lot of armor it can help ensure that people aren't getting out of your stuns at 10k hp when you have no energy to finish and so on.

Sometimes teams will catch on to you having a pattern of expose armoring before your about to blow cds on someone so be aware sometimes you can do a bit of mind-gaming with it. You can bait shamans into swapping earth shield to a different target and things like that if people notice you apply the debuff to targets 10-20 secs before popping big cooldowns.

TL;DR - Expose armor is like free damage, try put it up when you can, dw about it too much. Not going to be a massive gamechanger.

#4032316 Assassination Rogue Discuss!!

Posted Woundman on 13 January 2014 - 09:59 PM

Assassination is the worst specialization a Rogue can play right now. I've tried my absolute best to make Mutilate work, but it's just not possible at a high level (except in certain situations where riding a DK w/ Para might get you a win or two). The nostalgia attached to Mutilate isn't even there anymore. The play style isn't remotely the same anymore.

Why Assassination is LOW tier:
  • Wound Poison can't be used effectively
  • Rupture is garbage
  • Venomous Wounds has a 75% chance to proc
  • Out of Energy....Out of Energy....Out of Energy....
  • Envenom hits like a wet noodle
  • Vendetta is a 2 minute cool-down with a GCD and removed with Vanish, Block and Bubble

If SOME of the above were addressed, I would consider playing Mutilate over Combat and Subtlety.

/end rant

As for playing Shadow Focus over Subterfuge, you're sacrificing one of your best Offensive/Defensive talents. I would only recommend you pick Shadow Focus in certain situations.

Your openers look fine (openers are situational after all). Keep SnD and Venomous Wounds up, pool your energy for Dispatch/Envenom. Boom roasted.

#4070300 Thugcleave vs LSD Turbocleave and TSG!

Posted swagoverlord on 03 March 2014 - 12:16 PM

thugcleave is an extremely fast paced comp, you usually can't ever afford to go defensive during the game... as far as turbo and tsg tanky comps like that in beginning of the season will be really hard because thug cleave is a very gear dependent comp, it is going to be really strong imo at the end of season... against lsd cross cc ele and go lock, maybe can swap druid later in the game, tsg peel death knight with slows and disarm when warrior is on stun dr but go warrior, against turbo go shaman kidney so hunter can trap with no grounding.... kinda short n sweet but hope it helps :)

Also, I think mongoing damage into healer only really applies against shamans.  Attacking other healers is situationally good, but not always good.  You have to feel it out with your rogue--see what he's comfortable killing and what he's not.  Since you're an affliction warlock and do crap damage in kill windows, it's going to be mostly him doing the finishing.
