#3610811 AJ and Curse on SOPA

Posted Rapture on 10 January 2012 - 03:39 PM

Although we do not normally comment on politics, as a company, Curse has taken a decisive stance against the Stop Online Piracy Act, otherwise known as SOPA. We're in good company. Companies like Google, Facebook, Wikipedia, and PayPal have all come out with stances against SOPA.

Though it is well intentioned, examining the facts of this bill shows that if it were to pass, it would be extremely harmful to the Internet as we know it.

What is SOPA?

SOPA is a bill that is currently sitting in the House Judiciary Committee of the United States House of Representatives awaiting further debate.

Under SOPA, U.S. law enforcement and copyright holders would be given the ability to to seek court orders against websites accused of enabling or facilitating copyright infringement.

The trouble with SOPA

Taking into account the ways in which the bill intends to stamp out online piracy, several issues with the bill become apparent:
  • Strengthening the power of copyright holders on the Internet through government legislation has proven ineffective in the past, having done little to stop online piracy. Offending websites that are shut down simply reappear under a new URL.
  • Lots of piracy sites are hosted outside of the US so they could not be effectively shut down by US law. This bill would make it so that copyright holders would only be able to have the DNS records removed from US servers. This effectively means that the site still exists and can be accessed directly through an IP address and does nothing to stop the piracy.
  • DNS Blocking like this is thought to compromise your personal security on the Internet.
  • Companies that have simply embraced the convenience of the Internet for consumers have been more effective at curbing piracy, like NetFlix and Spotify.
  • Vague language used in the bill like "facilitating copyright infringement" may easily be turned against the sites Internet users rely on daily.
We believe SOPA is more likely to harm legitimate web entities and inconvenience daily internet users than to actually remedy the issue with online piracy.

How would SOPA impact the Internet?

Under SOPA, U.S. law enforcement would be able to blacklist entire websites using DNS blocking simply for containing any instance of content deemed offending. This would affect sites with a great deal of user generated content, including Curse and all social media sites.

In fact it's thought that using DNS blocking would actually decrease your security online by creating conflicts between DNS servers, which would make users more vulnerable to hackers, identity theft, and cyber attacks.

Search engines would be forced to block links to any sites found to be "enabling or facilitating" copyright infringement, making it impossible for users to find the amount of information that they can now.

SOPA would literally allow copyright holders the ability to censor any content deemed to be facilitating copyright infringement, and some have already listed popular sites like Vimeo, SoundCloud, and PayPal as potential targets.

How do I take a stance on SOPA?

Were SOPA to become law, the Internet as we know it would change dramatically due to rampant censorship by the US Department of Justice and copyright holders. Of course, we are against online piracy, but SOPA is not the answer.

To preserve the freedom of the Internet, it's important to stand in opposition to SOPA. Write to your representative in Congress and spread the word through social media.

Writing your congressional representative is simple. The House of Representative's website has an easy-to-use tool to find your representative and send him/her an email. You can also sign the Whitehouse.gov petition.

#3558369 Gladiator Title Requirements

Hey folks, as you know the season is soon going to wrap up and many people are asking questions about what are the exact requirements for the highly coveted Gladiator Title and the end of the season mount reward are. We've taken the time to fully explain the requirements!

Requirements for the Gladiator Title:
  • Your team needs to be within the top .5% of your Battlegroup's active teams (Check out the Gladiator Title Calculator to see the cutoff)
  • Your character needs to be within 100 personal rating of the team rating (If your rating is higher than the team rating this does not apply, and you will still get your title).
  • Your character needs to have played 20% of the total games played by the team for this season.
  • Your character needs to be level 85.
  • Your team needs to be in either the 3v3 or 5v5 bracket.
*The 2v2 bracket does not give any title rewards.

Common Misconceptions:
There are a lot of misconceptions about what the exact requirements are. Here's some of them:
  • My team will be "inactive" if I don't play during the last few weeks.
  • There needs to be two people in the team that meet the requirements.
  • Your account needs to be active when titles/rewards are handed out.
A Team Is Considered Inactive If:
  • The team has no players in it.
  • The team has nobody in it that meets the Personal Rating requirements (within 100 PR of the Team Rating).
  • The team does not have more then 20 games played for the season.
  • The team has no members who have played 20% of the total games played during the season.
*Inactive teams do not count towards the total number of teams when calculating the cutoff for Gladiator.
*Your in game team ranking is your actual ranking. It does not include inactive teams that are higher rated then you.

Now, if you haven't qualified for the Gladiator Title, it does not mean that you're are not going to receive any reward at all. The Duelist, Rival and Challenger Titles are up for grabs as well. The requirements for these titles are exactly the same as for the Gladiator title with the exception of one thing: Instead of being in the top .5%, they have less stringent requirements about where your team's standing needs to be at the end of the season.

Title Standing Percentiles:
  • Gladiator - 0.5%
  • Duelist - 0.5% - 3.0%
  • Rival - 3% - 10%
  • Challenger - 10% - 35%

And the last but not least, the title that we must talk about is the Ruthless Gladiator Title. This is the most prestigious title given to a single team in each ladder, 3v3 and 5v5, in each Battlegroup. If you're one of the lucky few who has fought hard throughout the season to secure the Ruthless Gladiator Title, congratulations!

Also, here's a nifty macro to check your ranking in game: (thanks to Schnorki)
/script for i=1,3 do t,s,r,_,_,tp,_,_,pp,ra,p=GetArenaTeam(i) pl=(floor((pp/tp*100*10^2)+0.5))/10^2 ChatFrame1:AddMessage(""..s.."v"..s..": Team <"..t.."> is rank "..ra.." with "..r.." rating. ("..p.." personal, "..pl.."% played)") end

We'd like to give a big thanks to Maarkoo for originally posting much of this information in this thread.

#3501714 Power Hungry Moderators

Posted Rapture on 28 September 2011 - 11:46 PM

This is the kind of crap I'm getting sick of seeing. Threads overrun with trolls and whiners without anything constructive to contribute.

I have not said anywhere that you can't discuss non-wow related things. We have places for that. No problem.

I do have a problem with threads that undermine the community as well as threads that are just pure 4chan style trolling. The vindication 2v2 thread was full of garbage and posts were reported from it multiple times each day whether it was irl photos of other members, racism, slanderous skype logs, or this crap about some supposedly <18 year old girl (at which point it becomes legally questionable material).

Chat it up, have banter, talk about whatever you want - just leave the bottom feeding troll posts out of it. I know you guys are smarter than this and know what is going to cause problems.  If anyone has constructive suggestions for better supporting the community in any way - please post here or send me a PM this community is my primary concern and will see to it that your opinions are heard and we work together to make the site better. But I'll remind everyone here - site bashing and mod bashing are specifically against the rules - it won't be tolerated.

#3501165 Forum Rules and Moderation

Posted Rapture on 28 September 2011 - 03:30 PM

It has always been and always will be the goal of ArenaJunkies to foster a constructive community for PvP and Arena. It's for this reason we are tightening down moderation across the board and making some changes to the rules for our BG forums.

The Battle Group forums were established to allow conversation among rivals and teammates on your BG. This inevitably leads to trash talking and as long as you're just interacting with your fellow players and keeping the conversation reasonable, a little back and forth is all right. However, lately certain threads have become nothing but non-constructive, over the top insult threads. Myself and the moderation team are sick of it. Please refrain from derailing the threads too much and insulting users.

We are changing the rules so that the BG forums are no longer categorically immune to 1 point infractions. Yes, it will continue to be more lenient than the rest of the forums, but moderators will use their judgement to determine if a post is  harmful to the community.

It's your responsibility to post constructively and in a way that contributes to the community. I recommend everyone review the updated rules. I would also like to remind everyone to Posted Image report any post or thread you see as being harmful to the community.
