Its KINDA like a ranged druid I would say because you switch between different sets of skills, often you just switch to the toolkit, for example, to pull an enemy to you, switch back to rifle to use  cc and burst and switch to flamethrower to push him away and deal extra damage with skill 2. You can make builds without kits but you lose alot if you do so, those builds are good to learn the class because kit-heavy-builds usualy need alot of skill to be played propably compared to a none skill build.

Turrets are more or less useless in PvP. They deal not enough damage to be worth a skill slot. The pistol builds are all about stacking conditions (debuffs) on the enemy and the rifle builds use burst. The rifle is more or less a close range weapon, think of it as a shotgun. Its one of the most versatile classes in the game right now, you can build it in any direction you want. The class has alot control and cc. Its a very good teamplay class and has basicaly a tool for any problem that the enemy can throw at you if you spec it right. Damage is fine, other classes have more burst but you can make cc chained burst if you are skilled enough to pull it of. Dot spec is one of the best in the game and has alot pressure, they nerfed it in the last stress test but its still fine, not as OP as it was back in the last tests.

The downside is that other professions can be better at specific roles but on the other hand those classes have to focus on it way more than a engi has. Elixirs (skills that give you buffs and can be thrown with a second skill to aoe buff allies) have random outcome, not all of them but usually the aoe buff is random. So if you really need the regen or damage reduction of your heal elixir and you get the movement buff it can kill you.

I think Mity's list applies more to the 'on paper' descriptions of classes. In practice I thing some of the classes have completely different roles. For instance there is a condition removal Ele build that is a point defense MONSTER. Also Engineers are horrible at point defense even though one would think that since they have access to turrets they would be built for this. Not really, though.

From my experience, my list would be:

Warrior: Damage / Support / Point Defense / Roamer
Ranger: Damage / Point Defense (Spirit build) / Roamer
Thief: Damage / Roamer
Mesmer: Damage
Elementalist: Damage / Roamer / Point Defense / Support
Necromancer: Condition Damage / Point Defense
Engineer: Damage
Guardian: Damage / Support / Point Defense

Notice how every class has capable damage, which at least keeps each class viable.

THIS IS NOT MY WORK, THIS IS FROM REDDIT AND I THINK IT IS GOOD FOR ANYONE TRYING TO KNOW CLASS ROLES ETC



Here are the roles I've often seen for each one, and have builds / people that understand the mechanics of the class for said role:
Engineer: Point Defense - Condition Damage
Necromancer: Support - Condition Damage
Thief: Roamer - Damage Support
Elementalist: Support - Power Damage
Warrior: Power Damage - Support - Roamer - Point Defense
Ranger: Condition Damage - Roamer - Point Defense
Mesmer: Support - Damage
Guardian: Point Defense - Support - Damage
Here are the roles (sort of) explained:
Point Defense: Keep the point as long as possible and hopefully stop the team from capping the point but instead keep it neutralized. The point isn't for you to get points by the time this situation happens: it's to make sure the other team doesn't.
Support: There are quite a few different meanings by this word, but the primary assumption with this is buffing or ressing those around you to continue the fight, or give your team the edge in a fight. Example - Also applies to Roamer imo Additionally, putting down combo fields, area denial, CCs, and managing boons and conditions (eg. wiping conditions) of your team also fits in the role of support.
Damage (Condition/Power/Hybrid): These roles have to be balanced in your team comp because there are upsides and downsides to each one:

  • Conditions don't affect objects like trebuchets, and a team that is heavy on condition removal can really lower the amount of damage you put out.

  • Power based attacks can be evaded, blocked, etc. A prime example of this is the Hundred Blades / Bulls Charge Warrior. One simple dodge, CC, or Block skill and a lot of your build is useless until your cooldowns are up and you catch someone off guard.
For those who prefer visuals: Power vs. Conditions
Additionally, Damage is primarily used to rotate and roam. This means capping points, attacking other players, and participating in team fights. A note to add however, is that going purely Power or purely Conditions may be detrimental. When you go one or the other, you emphasize a strength, but that also emphasizes a weakness. Hybrids are your friend, so long as you use them right / account for the weaknesses in said build.
A final note on everything: quite a bit of this is subject to change, as well as stimuli (eg. How the opposing team is acting / what moves they're making) but that's rather based on the strategies of the opposing team, not the professions themselves.
Note 1: Always bring a stun breaker, please for the love of god. Damage output doesn't mean anything if you have to respawn every 10 seconds.
Note 2: I'm not on a team, and I've been working so I haven't been able to discuss with others and learn nuances and potentialities, but this is what my general assumptions of the gameplay are at the moment. If someone wants to elaborate on something, or completely tell me I'm incorrect, please do.
