Maybe it's a damn hard thing to do, and you can fail even if you're not incompetent?  Maybe there's a huge advantage to being first?  What does failure even mean?  Lots of MMOs are still going along making a profit, even if they aren't nearly as successful as WoW is.

Most MMOs are being released, and then trying to grab as much money as possible before no one plays them anymore. So yes, incompetent.

- Elemental plateau pvp in nagrand while trying to farm motes. Starts off as a 1v1, 2v1, 2v2, etc.. People call others in.. Next thing you know its a 5v5 or a guild v.s guild 10v10+ fight. Had some good times out there, haha.

- Being in full arena gear including off-set pieces in s2/s3 etc, joining a bg, and having everyone on your WSG team inspecting you and telling you they will follow you and give you heals. (because back in that day it was actually rare encountering someone in full arena gear including shoulders etc in a bg; and it actually meant something). Nowadays everyone and their mom has full gear so nobody even looks twice.

- Having to devote an entire AV weekend to grind honor for 1 off-piece like cloak / bracer, etc (back when shit used to cost like 27.5k). As opposed to now.. Being able to get 5+ pieces in a weekend.

- Auchindoun/ring of observence pvp in Terokkar. As mentioned, repeatedly getting ganked in Coilfang Reservoir trying to get into a heroic there, or SSC. Used to get my guild out there to gank pve-nerds and just camp it. That or entrance to Gruuls, lol.

- Tarren Mill vs Southshore. (or trying to level at all in hillsbrad, lol. Srsly was the worst area. Spending more time dead than actually leveling).

- That b.c/Vanilla  feeling of actually having to run to the entrance of a raid/instance etc to run something rather than q'ing up.

- Less than a minute queue times for 5's back in b.c.

- 2345

- CAPS LOCK CREW

old school arena'ers will get these last 2 points.

I never had to spend an entire weekend to get 1 piece though as you gained alot more honor from a BG than you do now.

Sad but true. NC-Soft is notorious for this. It's become a money grab just like universities. >_<

I guess it depended on how hard you went. It was typically like ~1200'ish honor per win back then if I remember correctly. Either way it still took a LOT more wins to get a piece then.

Most MMOs are being released, and then trying to grab as much money as possible before no one plays them anymore. So yes, incompetent.

That definition of incompetent is not what I was going for.

I think you're very wrong to assume that other MMO designers are simply trying to 'grab as much money as possible before no one plays them anymore.'  They are made by passionate people who want to feel like they are accomplishing something, like their lives have a greater purpose.  That's not to say that nobody at these companies is just looking to get money, but I'm pretty sure that generally their plan is not to have 0 players after 6 months.

As a more general point, this is one of the worst things about discourse on the internet.  It's so often polluted with shortsighted, surface-level explanations of why things are the way they are.  Reality is complicated, and by claiming that some large group of people are idiots or evil, (as is often done) you're missing it.  You're missing the complicated nuanced layers of reality which are fucking interesting when you peel back the layers.  I don't claim to know why most other MMOs are not super successful, but I'm pretty sure it's not as simple as "everyone else is idiots."

Lol 3 years ago it was WoTLK that killed arena, now it's cata, tomorrow it'll be pandaria or whatever this thing is called. Games progress, nothing is killed, they just evolve. It's so boring watching people repeat the same exact cycle of disdain, x killed y, y killed z.

And why couldn't they evolve for the worse?

Look at the interaction between communities, all of that is gone. Rivalries between H/A, between servers, between BGs. Those are just small things that they all killed off.

By making everything more accesible, they also make everything way more boring & less exclusive.
People still cream their pants nowadays when they see somebody wearing some exclusive vanilla items, for good reason. Because back then it actually took an effort to get some of those items, compared to nowadays.

The game has devolved into a huge chathub that you hop in & out of into instances. Outside the leveling content, you barely at all interact with the rest of the gameworld nowadays. You can queue for everything from everywhere. The things that made the game a hassle also created additive value at the same time, but people didn't realize that (neithert did i).

There aren't any hard to get or rare items anymore now. Different versions of the same item just kill any creativity & make the game boring. Legendary items nowadays are easier to come by than certain epics in the past.
It's like if Blizzard would be making ferraris, everybody wants them, but by making them accesible to everybody, they lose their special value to a certain degree. Certain things are appealing to people because of their exclusivity, if you take that away, it loses a lot of their appeal.

Pretty sure people acted like this :

TBC s1 - "oh god this game is great, arena is so fun and good"
TBC s2-s4 : "oh god fucking blizzard, op resto druids and rogues" ( they really were )

TBC->WoTLK patch ( rets oneshotting everything ) : "WTF BLIZZARD"

WoTLK:
"OMG TBC WAS SO MUCH BETTER"

WoTLK S5: /mass quitting
WoTLK S6: Warrior ArP PVE gear, Frost DKs, etc : "WTF BLIZZARD, MORE SHIT AFTER S5 ? "
WoTLK S7: relatively good season outside of few ATC's
WoTLK S8: PvE gear and wizardcleaves, however everyone could mostly win everything, therefore, best period of the game ?

WoTLK-> Cata patch "FUCKING ROGUES AND DEMO LOCKS"

Cataclysm :

Cata S9 : surprisingly good, although people whined about several specs being unusable for the first few weeks, this expansion would've been great if the arena queue bug didn't drive a lot of people to quit/leave the game ( you queued and waited for up to 10 minutes at prime hour to get matched with people, this lasted for several weeks ) - I quit at this point so can't say what people thought about end of S9 and S10
Cata s11: DS PvE trinkets, LSD2 ruling the world together with 3DPS

Conclusion : "BRING BACK WOTLK"

MoP :

MoP S12 : "FUCKING HUNTERS, FUCKING WARRIORS ToB, FUCKING SHADOWPRIESTS; FUCKING MAGES, FUCKING SHIT GAME"
MoP S13 : didn't play, can't tell how people talked about it
MoP S14 : didn't play, can't tell how people talked about it.
MoP S15 : played casually, people hated it

Conclusion : "bring back WoTLK"

WoD S16 : "FUCKING ABILITY PURGE, GAME BECAME TOO EASY AND BRAINDEAD SPECS ARE DOMINATING"

Conclusion : "bring back WoTLK":

So if people want WoTLK back, I guess WoTLK really is the best thing since sliced bread, as quoted from some guy's signature :D I agree though, S7 best season ever in term of mechanics and balance, S8 best season ever in terms of popularity ( tournament realm was up during this season, so there's that )

Me basically summing up the opinon of majority of players aside, let's concentrate on your attack towards me stating my opinion - first of all, WoTLK had much deeper mechanicals and strategical requirement than later expansions. Also, how am I sitting in the past ? Last time I've checked, I got Gladiator every single expansion, and multiple titles in expansions I've liked.
