Thought I would start a thread where people can share their tips for priesting. Basically things that are not immediately obvious to a new priest, but can really improve your gameplay if implemented in your toolkit.

Keep in mind, even if you know these already, someone else might not.

Here's a few to start off:

- Spectral Guise takes you out of combat instantly, which means you can get fast drinks

- Mind control is actually a buff on you, and since you become hostile to friendlies when MCed, it has to be purged off, and not cleansed. This means druid, paladin and monk healers can not dispel it.

- You can Mass Dispel yourself out of an enemy priests mind control by precasting it so it lands at the same time as the MC. Due to spell delay, the mass dispel removes the debuff.

- You can use Pain Suppression while stunned, but also while Hunter trapped.

- Shielding yourself for the Borrowed Time buff reduces the casting time of your next Mind Control, but also your next resurrection. A spectral guised, PI'd, BT'ed Res is very fast, and can easily catch people off guard.

- Power Infusion reduces the cast time of Psyfiend. This makes him spam fears really fast, and can be very strong against teams that like to kite or kill it.

- Mage defensive cooldown Temporal Shield is dispellable. It has 2 parts; when its put up, all the damage he takes within 4 seconds will be healed back over time in a new seperate buff. While the healing portion is undispellable, the inital 4 second application can be removed, completely negating the CD.

- Mindbender/shadowfiend restores a percentage of maximum mana per hit. If you combine it with even 1 tick of Hymn of hope before using it, you will gain the max mana increased buff, which makes your fiend restore even more mana per hit.

- When death knights use their ability Lichborne, they will break your fear and turn undead for the duration. This means you can actually shackle them for CC. in 2v2 for example, you can drag him around a corner, make him kick your mind control (shadow school), and then shackle him full to hopefully force a trinket or desecrated ground. If he's good he will have a cancelaura lichborne macro though, or stop you otherwise (AMS, strang, petstun, etc). Still handy to know though.

- Life Swap can be used pretty wicked in combination with mage alter time. If you are getting trained and are about to die and swap and he still has AT ready, ask him to use it, and he won't lose any health if he restores it by going back in time.

If you have anything to contribute, big or small, feel free to share

Great tips, I didn't realize about PI and psyfiend or Mindbender/HoH.  I have a few which are probably lame or obvious to most people, but here goes:

- If you're getting Ursol's Vortex / Solar beamed, start walking out of the beam and IF before you get pulled back in, the silence protection will last longer than the remainder of the beam.

- Shadowmeld is invaluable.  It's particularly useful if you get stuck out in the open and see a hard-casted cc that you won't have any outs for, such as Cyclone (or Hex if neither of your partners can remove curses).  I generally use it as a backup to preventative spectral guises.

- Very basic, but penance with the glyph let's you run behind pillars or out of range after the cast starts.

- Specific for running with rets:  Everyone knows that sac now gets you out of magic effects like traps, but even though the tooltip doesn't make it clear, bop also removes physical effects like warrior fear and scatter.  Devotion is also great, but remember it has a longer cooldown.  Rets can also dispell DP.

- Don't forget Leap of Faith.  Allowing someone to get behind a pillar when your opponents are bursting often prevents more damage than you could have healed or shielded in the same gcd.

- If you think a mage is going to set up a deep, dispell freezes on the target as soon as they land.  If you are too late to get the freeze off, chances are you will get the deep right after it hits.

- Feathers.  I'm sure getting good at feathers was worth at least 200 points in rating.

Worth to mention you can dispel anything this way, for example against Mages who comes out of invis who usually start off by a poly, then you can easily throw MD out and hopefully you will time it and dispel yourself. Sometimes in 2's you might even dispel the Deep Freeze if he would go for you.

Anyway, you brought up some pretty obvious things though. But maybe it's appreciated by someone who have just started doing arenas and / or just rerolled. I am quite shit myself, only 2k experienced in 3's but I've never really thought about being able to Shackle Undead DK's who uses Lichborne. When you think of it you feel a little bit retarded...

Also this
- remeber to place Psyfiend on-top on yourself if you have to exploit yourself against Hunter teams. Because of this you're somewhat safe for not getting trapped because the Psyfiend will most of the time eat it, if not he will fear the hunter. But it's not 100% safe since he might kill the Psyfiend or the Psyfiend doesn't want to eat your trap.

- If you're afraid of getting trapped, you can put psyfiend below you and with luck it will eat it.

- With glyphed shadow word: death its possible to get out of any cc that breaks on dmg. Use it just before the casting ends.

#showtooltip Shadow Word: Death
/stopcasting
/cast [@target,harm] Shadow Word: Death
/stopmacro[harm]
/targetenemy
/cast Shadow Word: Death
/targetlasttarget

That macro will use it on the nearest enemy and it won't drop your main target.

- If you want to use your Holy Word as a cc, you don't have to change to Chakra: Chastise. It's enough to drop your actual "stance" with /cancelaura. With this method you don't have to wait 5 seconds to go back to healing stance. Unfortunatelly it's hard to check the cooldown of chastise after changing stances. This macro will uses the built in stopwatch to show it's cooldown.

#showtooltip Holy Word: Chastise
/cancelaura Chakra: Serenity
/cancelaura Chakra: Sanctuary
/cast [target=arena1] Holy Word: Chastise
/script Stopwatch_Play();
/stopwatch 29

- Don't forget to use Divine Hymn in los when you know it's risky to cast in open area.

Would it be possible to macro purge party1/2?  Like this:

/cast [@party1,help] Dispell
/cast [@party1,harm] Purge

AWESOME THREAD. Too bad we don't see more of these on AJ these days.  =D

Here are a few of mine, primarily from a Holy point of view, but some are just general

1. Spectral guise has a bit of a latency lag time - if you use it when a poly/clone/etc is late in the cast you will just end up ccd in stealth, rather than avoiding the cc

2. Someone else said it, but hot damn learning to use feathers well is insanely important IMHO

3. If you are playing against a disc, knowing that you'll both be trying for the opening fear, enter the arena without a chakra up and you'll have the chance to chastise him before he even gets in range.  This can setup an easy trap, fear if he hasn't pre-warded, ring, etc. I swear so many people are still unprepared to fight a holy priest.

4. This one is obvious to many people, but can change a game - if you are going to have to lifeswap to yourself and you aren't close to a pillar, immediately stealth after.  Since it drops focus and target, it can give you that split second to get to the pillar or catchup on healing.

5. Grip can be used offensive too, especially vs. gate teams.  Drop a feather under your feet, grip your melee to you (standing half way between the two gates) and he'll be over to the other side in no time.  Will be especially big in 5.4, when gate has a 45 sec cd.

6. Someone mentioned that you can just drop chakra to use chastise rather than go into chakra:chastise.  It's actually really huge that you NEVER go into chastise, since it will put your other chakras on a 5 sec cd.  I use a macro that lets me put up serenity and drop it with the same button:

/cancelaura chakra:serenity
/cast chakra:serenity

I'm sure there are others I will think of, but those are off the top of my head.

Also before mind control lands on you, you can use offensive dispel too to get yourself out, if you have MD on cd (pretty rng tho due to trash buffs). Not sure if you wanted to say this. :P

-Druid fear from symbiosis is deathable.

-Since MC is a channel and requires a constant target, stealthing even at the end of the mc cast will stop the channel (unless you get unlucky and the bug where you're seen in stealth occurs. In which case enemy will control your stealthed priest).

-Inner focus protects you from dispels, allowing you to stop others from purging off your fear ward.

-Guising as you get scattered if you don't have death will allow the copy to usually eat the trap, however, you will need to pre-shield yourself, otherwise the damage from scatter will break guise and your copy with despawn before the trap activates.

-Penancing yourself will give you 3 stacks of grace, which are all separately dispelled, giving you 3 extra trash buffs that could be dispelled before your ward.

-DKs dark sim eats the next magic ability, so if you're half-decent and look for it, and don't need to use global to heal, you can give a DK levitate so he doesn't get anything useful.

-Body and soul (because not everybody likes those blasted feathers) is dispelable, so using this talent and shielding a friendly in danger can allow one extra trash buff to eat dispel and protect the actual shield.

-Against hunter teams, you can MC anyone but the hunter and walk them onto a missed trap, which will cause the enemy to be trapped. Also, if you MC the hunter, he will be friendly, which will make the missed trap friendly, so any enemy sitting on it will then be trapped.

-When MCing an enemy into a friendly aoe cc (your missed trap / RoF), put them on it, jump them straight up, then use stopcasting bind. This way for the next .5 seconds they will only be able to fall right down from your jump, so they can't walk out of the cc and escape because of latency.

Just some stuff off the top of my head.

Grace is only really 1 trash buff regardless of how many times you stack it though no? Since when dispelling you either take a stack of grace or the ward.

As OP said, spectral guise gets you out of combat for a second till your clone guy gets hit. I like using it to mount up ^^

if you play with a paladin vs a paladin you can mc the enemy and have your paladin bop (or w/e its called now) them resulting in the Forbearance debuff => they can't bubble.

You either take a stack of grace or the ward. If you get a stack of grace you redispel. You can either get a second stack of grace or a ward. If you get stack of grace you redispel. You can get the last stack of grace or ward.

It is 3 different dispelable stacks. As in, 3 trash buffs. You said it yourself in your question. Yet you still questioned it.

what u said implied u have a 25% chance to get ward then 33% and then 50% . what he means is that you have 3 x 50%chance to get the debuff.
