Mr. Holinka just posted an official World of Warcraft blog about the 5.4 arena changes. Enjoy:

Big changes are coming to World of Warcraft’s Arenas that will make participating more convenient and competitive than ever before, and some of those changes may begin appearing on the PTR very soon.

Today, competition is limited to the realms within your Battlegroup, and your ability to participate in the Arena system requires having a static team with friends on the same realm. In the upcoming Patch 5.4, we’re building on technological improvements we’ve made over time (such as region-wide matchmaking) to expand the pool of competitors and improve the Arena experience for all World of Warcraft players.

One of the first things you’ll notice in Patch 5.4 is that you’ll no longer need to join or create an Arena team to compete. Instead, queuing will work much as it does for Rated Battlegrounds: you can queue for an Arena battle in a party of the appropriate size (still 2v2, 3v3, and 5v5), and your opponents will be selected based on the average Match Making Rating of your party.

For the most part, the mechanics of Arena will remain the same. You’ll still gain and lose personal rating based on your wins and losses, though your Conquest Point cap will now be based on your Personal Rating. The rating requirements to purchase items will also be based on your Personal Rating.

The change will confer a few advantages over the old static-team-based system:
  • You’ll no longer need to worry about invitations, joining, or leaving an Arena team. Now you can play with who you want, when you want.
  • You’ll be able to join a cross-realm group and queue for Arena matches with friends from other realms.
  • The Arena ladder will no longer be sorted according to Battlegroup. Just like Rated Battlegrounds and normal Battlegrounds, now all Arenas will be region-wide. You’ll be competing with a field of opponents that includes every Arena player in your region.
As before, at the end of an Arena season, the top players will still earn titles and mounts.

We’re excited for these changes, and we’re eagerly looking forward to hearing your feedback. Please join us on the PTR when these updates go live to check them out for yourself.

Also check out the amazing setup of the Bleached Bones tournament. Some of the best players in the world will face off against each other. Arena Junkies will cover the tournament and hopefully have the stream on the frontpage.Posted Image

I am wondering how they will determine rewards at  the end of season. I'm still a little confused also, I was under the impression these changes were being made to encourage people to play with other friends who are lower rated. I'm not sure how removing teams but essentially retaining the same MMR system does that.

At any rate, I'll still be playing.

Sometimes I wish the downvote button was still here. This is something a lot of the players on these very forums suggested for years. One battlegroup will bring back the competition to WoW. No more transfers for backwater R1, carries way harder than before and no need to transfer to find mates.

Not sure, the tournament is EU based. As soon as we know we will do a bigger news post just about the tournament with all relevant information.

Does every player who made a singe arena game count as an active player or are there any requirements to be active like with arena teams now? How does it work in rbgs? Wont there be waaay more glad spots then now?

Can you elaborate on how you think carries will be harder with the new system? It seems to me like not having teams is going to make the lives of boosters way easier.

this change will force me to never play with my low experienced friends
they should add some kind of "reset" button to my MMR/CR WIN/LOSS record
im disappointed they didn't really elaborate more on the change in today's announcement
there are still so many questions unanswered

I was referring to the backwater pool carries. It will be way harder to reach glad with carries when the whole region is competing for the spots. Maybe I'm wrong. Hmm...

Probably conferred with some friends who have no idea about arena and just decided this was a terrible update.

I can't wait for it most of my friends play on other servers so being able to queue up with them will be awesome. I also can't wait for 5s I'm hoping it brings people back to it now that they will have the resources to find teammates!

as long as EU is not in the same pool with russians it will be good. And we shouldnt call it "R1 title" any more if its % based like gladiator

Well, you're going to have bigger pool of players = more inflated MMR = easier to get higher. I mean, if you're already a top player going for boosts, going through more inflated MMR is way easier.

Pros of this system:
Harder to sit ratings (way, way harder)
Proper competition of top spots, titles may mean something again
Alot faster ques, I mean ALOT
Multiple different comps queuing at whatever time of the day
Wintrading is way harder, because of alot more players queuing, so it's harder to hit  the same exact teams
I will migrate no more to anywhere at all, ever!
More activity on ladders resulting in more title/mount spots

Cons of this system
Heavily inflated MMR and ratings
Risk of new system exploitation in masses, resulting in horrible season and resets and whatnot
W/L and rating makes me not want to que with some people with lower rating/mmr, in risk of losing my own rating and W/L and have a horrible looking W/L

I think pros outweight cons now though. Have to see how the system can be exploited, because if it's anything like RBG ladders, we all can kiss goodbye to competetition for good.
