And apparently the first major league sports player to do so according to some article. I suppose it makes sense that sports fans and even the teams and staff and such would be a kind of homophobic culture but it surprised me a bit to read this is a first considering homosexuality has become reasonably mainstream by now.

Sports ppl tell me what this means. Are we going to see more follow, is this guy making a mistake coming out?

The team and staff would not be homophobic those people are basically family and I'm sure they'd support him.  And some fans would despise him but the loyal ones would still be there.  And some other athletes have came out and said it, people will come out when they are ready not because some low tier nba player did.

Meant accepting homosexuality as normal/not a horrible thing is now common at least in major cities it seems. No one gives a fuck around here anyway except old people. Wasn't thinking too much about my choice of words I guess.

Not a sports expert but I could imagine fans reacting badly especially in certain states.

Were I in that situation I don't think I'd want it to be public knowledge.

Probably will be the only one.  Homosexuality is a rare and degenerate disease and above all viewed as a sin in our Lord Jesus Christ's eyes, amen.

nah it isn't but the media will have you believe otherwise.  and wanting it to be a big deal is a bit odd to me.  it shouldn't be a thing, it should just be a regular announcement with a seamless transition, aka nothing changing.  it's a good thing all in all but it shouldn't be a big deal; it should just be a part of life that everyone accepts and moves on with their own lives

jackie robinson breaking barriers in the 40's when Jim Crow laws were still a thing was a much bigger deal than coming out in 2013.  so in the big picture it really isn't that big of a deal honestly

what the fuck

it is irrelevant if it should be a big deal or not

noone would want this to be a big deal, but it is a huge step for anyone who is gay and in sports, especially professional sports.

i dont even know why you'd want to make the comparsion of the progress with gay equality and black equality, they're not the same. and trying to use it to belittle the progress in gay equality is just dumb.

the fact that other players of NBA would make ignorant statements minutes after the news, statements which had to be backed up by their team's PR management to save their asses, should be enough for you to understand that the culture in sports is different.
