I would really like to know your definition of poorly coded.

are you referring specifically to skype?  the fact that it leaks your ip is an absolutely monstrous security flaw and it should never have left the company.  more generally speaking, java is one of the most popular programs and there's a new 0 day exploit for it practically every tuesday.
is he still a fly guy clappin' if nobody ain't hear it

Specifically for skype, this "security flaw" is inconsequential for 99.9% of the people using it, and that is why it is overlooked. People do business calls over skype, and the other side of the line is not an acne ridden wow player looking for ways to abuse his way to pixelated titles.

As for java, it's not that it's badly coded, but it's mostly that as the ad says "more than 2 billion devices use java". That translates to a global platform for any hacker to gain information for multiple systems at once and that is why flaws are found every week. Because there are multiple individuals trying to capitalize on java's weaknesses - there is no such thing as a foolproof system. The more people looking at something the more the chances they will find a flaw.

being ddosed isn't the only consequence of having your ip leaked- it also has the potential to reveal your location and identity, which can be a very important issue.

Skype letting anybody see your IP without even adding you to contact list is a huge flaw no matter how you look at it. There's a reason why we call it a "flaw" - it's not standard practice and absolute majority of other similar services (and not similar) do not share IPs of their clients that openly. It's not even really a security issue - it's not like their software got hacked or anything, it's intentionally coded like that - it's just bad logic and code, they're lazy to do it properly. They would need to handle contact requests entirely server side, you know, and Microsoft is too poor to give Skype a few more servers for server side stuff...

You can say this exact thing about literally every other platform and OS in existence and Java is hardly a popular platform anymore. Doesn't justify it being shit at all. Please stop trying to sound like you have any idea about software

sounds pretty cool but why not use raidcall?

Raidcall is literally a clone of Ventrilo. Why do you think we don't use Ventrilo?

Shit quality, shit voice recognition (so you need to use a terrible PTT key), and huge delay.
Bye again! This game isn't fun when you don't know anyone else that still plays.

The problem comes from how easy it is to do. Anyone can get IPs from skype, but that doesn't mean the other non-server programs are any safer against someone with a good knowledge of programming.

These other client to client services can obfuscate/mask your IP but unless it is proxied the IP has to be stored somewhere since that is the virtual location of the person you are connecting with. Finding the memory location, which shouldn't be hard considering you know what you are looking for and then converting the hex right back into a readable IP.

...or contact requests can be handled entirely server side so they don't have to be exchanged at all until both sides add each other to contact list? Like most other IM services do, you know.

Thats still not 100%. Most people who ddos you had you added at one point. The person DDoSing everyone on Malganis played with every 4 months ago. I add people all the time for RBGs, Arenas, etc. How do you know the person you are playing with right now didn't catalog your IP to use later?

That's a different issue. Skype being P2P is just a part of the program, it's acceptable. Openly giving out IPs of everybody using it is not.

In some ways it is better that it is so easy to do because then everyone is forced to take steps to prevent themselves being a victim. If you are high rated, chances are you are going to get ddos'ed these days. Its better than it was in TBC/Wrath, people ddos'ed back then but got away with since people weren't aware.

Back in TBC/Wrath time it was called lag.
And what the fuck you trying to justify Skypes IP leaks for? I shouldn't have to protect myself with tunneling/vpn/proxies and whatnot to play a videogame with couple of my friends over the internet?

the difference between "showing people cool things" and "showing them advertisements" is marked by financial incentive

you are nothing more than a bitter moron. this program has the potential to be the replacement for skype for wow players and you are here giving him shit for "advertising" due to financial incentive?

are you fucking serious? regardless of his affiliation with Razer, this program is GOOD for the community, something many people will use.

i'm not sure why you're under the impression popularity and security vulnerabilities have any correlation.  some of the most popular software is also some of the most poorly coded.  skype is built like shit and the fact that a lot of people use it doesn't really affect that.

most popular software gets more hackers trying to find flaws in it. theres just no use for a linux trojan/adbot because so few people who have money to be stolen use it. windows programs just attract more of that. and dont tell me that there is some software that cannot be reversed to find vulnerabilities in it. since u know shit just shut up. or do you claim that there is some god programmer who writes nothing but perfect code?
the more users there is the more there is money to be taken thats so simple so the more popular an application gets the more it attracts hackers trying to profit from it.

good programs will get posted anyway.  if the op makes money for posting, he should not be posting, because there's no guarantee that what he's posting is actually quality.

i'm not sure if you actually know what you're talking about or anything but just because hackers are targeting it doesn't mean they're going to find anything.  the linux kernel is used on millions or billions of servers and other devices and yet, it's not getting hacked like java is, because it isn't coded like shit.

the fact is that popularity and security are in no way correlated.  java is shit software and skype is shit software.  there's software that is more and less popular than those two programs that are better coded.
