imo 'EDM' is a very american term. i've never heard of someone from the EU who uses this term.
what I connect with 'EDM' are genres like the recent 'house' music (i.e. avicii, guetta, swedish house mafia, etc.), trap, US-electro-dubstep (i.e. skrillex, exicision, etc.).

it's pretty much the mainstream of electronic music which has established itself in the last years and i think that's also what jinglebombs wanted to say earlier.

No, that's a whole different thing, and that's fine. It's completely normal when "electronic dance music" comes up in a conversation, everybody assumes mainstream music.

It's the "trance is not EDM" that was stupid. It's basically like saying that if something isn't mainstream electronic dance music, then it's not electronic dance music at all (or, to quote, not "real EDM"). Fucking dumb.

Hhahah thanks for the feedback guys!

@Buglamp - Trance is a style of electronic dance music that developed in the 1980s. Trance music is generally characterized by a tempo of between 130 and 160 BPM, featuring repeating melodic synthesizer phrases, and a musical form that builds up and down throughout a track. It often features crescendos and breakdowns. Sometimes vocals are also utilized. The style is arguably derived from a combination of largely electronic music such as ambient music, techno, and house. In the early 1980s, the German composer Klaus Schulze composed several albums of experimental, atmospheric space music. Two of his albums from the 1980s include the word “trance” in their titles: Trancefer (1981) and En=Trance (1987). The early trance act Dance 2 Trance though it is likely that both these uses are linked to the perceived ability of a drum beat to induce altered states of consciousness, aka a trance. As this music is almost always played in nightclubs at popular vacation spots and in inner cities, trance can be understood as a form of club music.

@Brian_emo - hahah while your answer is complete crap it actually gave me a laugh :D

@Liptonice - Sadly Tiesto not anymore... he's gone all to EDM. But Armin is still the biggest name around :)

my musical knowledge just doesn't live up to yours :)

How is trance not EDM?

Btw, best place to get trance/prog house... look under these labels on beatport.com: Enhanced Recordings, Enhanced Progressive, Colorize, Anjunabeats, Anjunadeep, Always Alive, Otographic Music

I've got a very large library of trance music. Been listening to it since it became a genre. I love how it has evolved.

that's what i've been saying the whole time but thaya kept pushing things that arent really connected with the thread and now the rest is just taking words out of context and trying to put words into my mouth.

let's just stop - i didnt want to make this a hate thread nor a genre discussion (that always ends bad)

Let's go

My absolute favorites (probably too repetitive for the unprepared listener, just a warning):

Also wasn't it you we were discussing Key Nell versions and D'Breeze in the music thread?

Less repetitive, probably more people will like this one than all the other links (keep in mind this 1995):

Sure thing... let's see... There are a lot of goodies, I'll probably be posting some more semi-recent ones...

In no particular order:

• Audien - Eleven Eleven (Original Mix)

• Envio - For You (The Blizzard Remix)

• Adam Szabo - Arcade (Original Mix)

One of the more creative tracks I've heard:
• Duderstadt - Stranded In NYC (Original Mix)

And finally, a classic:
• LavKastor - E3 (Original Mix)

Hmm the only trance 'album' that I can think of is Universal Religion Chapter 4, but really it's more of a glorified mix, just happened to be released and printed. Otherwise all the trance I ever found came from mixes, mostly from radioshows, and from looking at labels YT channels or beatport (I only fondly remember anjunabeats). I don't think there's even a point in trance albums, literally the entire genre lived on radioshows and events, it's all in the dj sets.

I also remember ASOT episode 196 being my favorite 2 hours of trance ever and I listened to it hundreds of times probably (still remember every sound of the intro track), I basically quit following ASOT somewhere in the middle of 2xx episodes because it only got worse every time. I also remember Karanda Show episodes 21 and 22 being my favorites, but that was way later. There were more, but I simply don't remember the numbers.

I haven't followed the trance scene in like ~5 years though, so idk maybe things changed.
