Hey guys, I was hoping for some advice on a laptop that's primarily just going to be a WoW/maybe future games down the line, so it doesn't need to be a super beast. I've been looking at i7s for a while, preferably with a 17' screen & 8 gigs of ram. Anyone have a laptop they would recommend with confidence?

Any particular reason you need a laptop?  Also 17" isn't exactly super portable.  Could you do with a $800 desktop and $200 shit laptop or tablet?

The last 3 computers I've had have all been home-built desktops, I'm just ready for a change of pace to a laptop. 15.6" isn't that small in comparison to the 17" in laptops I suppose, is it? I just figured I'd lean for the upper echelon of stats and size for the specs.

Upper echelon of stats + laptop do not go in the same sentence together.  Laptop processors are slower, laptop video cards are slower.  There's no way around that.  Getting a 17" instead of a 15.6" isn't going to make your laptop faster.  It's just going to make it heavier.

It's up to you whether or not you absolutely need to be able to move your computer for gaming, but bear in mind that even high end laptop parts are going to be slower than low-mid range desktop parts.

If you want specific models to look at, something like a y580 will work:

But it's going to perform worse than a desktop i3 and 640 or so.

I definitely shouldn't have said upper echelon then, haha. I'm primarily looking for a laptop for the mobility, that can also handle WoW, not saying WoW is intensive by any means, and maybe a future game or two that sparks interest. The 17" is simply for aesthetics, any size would do. Is the comparison really that much worse? A desktop i3 could outperform this laptop? I had no idea the difference was that critical.

maybe

Yea the performance difference is that big.  The one advantage you have is that you end up using a tiny ass screen with shit resolution, so it doesn't require as much performance to get something that has playable fps.

Harder to find 17" laptops < $1000 with decent parts.

Starting to rethink this possibility, as it seems to in most senses be the most reasonable.

Out of pure curiosity, are these laptops junk? At home, (when I'd actually be playing wow/games) it'd be run through my 23" widescreen monitor - otherwise, it's just for primarily that. I have a junkier, older laptop that I can lug around for purely internet, and this would be more lined towards gaming/home gaming.

Opinions? Should I just build something newer? Way too indecisive, fuck.

1) Switch chipsets, AMD has been sucking hardcore for awhile now.  1155 socket CPUs from intel will be both better and cheaper.  In that price range you're looking at i3s.  If you can float up to the $200 range maybe i5 2500k / i5 3570/k, etc.
2) This means you also need to change mobos.  (For i3 or i5 xxxx (no k) look at the cheaper chipsets, for i5 xxxxk look at z77)
3) Drop the aftermarket CPU cooler unless you get a -k processor (unlocked for overclocking)

case, psu, ram, gpu look pretty good.  Maybe ask around about the GPU, I'm not totally up to date on the best price/performance selection anymore there.
