Putting this in ask a gladiator since it is such a basic question:
Will I be able to buy this season's gear through honor before the beginning of next season?
I think I read that I will have to farm a fixed amount of honor to buy this season's weapons. Is that the case?

If it's the same as past seasons, you should be able to buy this seasons gear via honor in the week or two between the ending of S12 and the start of S13.
You will also need a certain amount of honor earned during the season to buy weapons, as well. It's usually the same amount of conquest points required to buy the weapon.
Regardless, I'm not entirely sure how the upgrade system will work with it. This season still has a few months left, more than likely.
