Best argument I've heard for why they do it, and why it's so common in the US compared to other first world countries, is probably the media coverage one.

Showing the culprits face, giving the body count, just generally giving it a lot of coverage ends up glorifying it to a certain degree and making it appealing to a certain type of person. They get some 15 minutes of fame as a villain, attention that they for some reason crave.

Gun control might not be sensible in the US, and I'm personally for more strict control, but I doubt that's as big of a factor as some people like to think.

Because I am from a place where anyone can kill you at any given time. It was at least expected and this is like you said not an act of war/poverty/gayness. Killing someone from the back is just weak man

But you're right, in almost 65 % of earth you are expected to be killed for no particular reason.
