I am a 2.1k+ player and I took a break from wow for a while. Should I be on top of dmg most games? are there any suggestions on comps other than god comp? Also any advice on play style would be greatly appreciated

As a shadow priest you're basically spamming dispel all game after applying DoTs. Use instant MB procs to stack orbs and then pop stuff + devouring plague for good swap damage. Cover it up with a silence and you'll get loads of pressure if done correctly.
