Sure you could always just play bette. I completely agree that you should always try to play better, but that doesn't excuse your not caring about gearing properly, as you'll be at a disadvantage against people who do bother gearing and gemming properly. If, however, you choose to both play better and gear better, you'll be far better off than otherwise.
Gear does change the course of matches. There's a huge difference in survivability when you're fully resilience gemmed compared to PvP power, which makes healing the game easier for the healer so that he can either go more offensive or keep up his mana much longer.

chaos bolt went from 95k dmg with no cds, to 76k dmg with no cds.
that's quite a massive decrease in dmg from just changing gems from offensive to resi.
didn't seem to have any trouble killing shit when i gemmed full resilience myself, so i just kept it as well.
personally i think it's more fun doing 100-0 in a stun though than being more tanky.

I'd agree if the numbers were slightly more noticable. But you won't notice almost any difference in numbers between full pvp power gemming and gear with no gems whatsoever (not even the subpar ones), the randomness factor of x to y damage still will have more impact than the gems.
You are now blinking manually.

Since LSD2 gamestyle is to survive long enough to oom the ennemy healer (that's how I see it), I would recommend you to gem full resilience.
If you're playing it like getting a kill with burst and CC, maybe PVP power can be better.
But I really think that resilience is the way to go cause it will avoid you at least 2/3 1-shoot which are really making everyone mad when it happens.
