I've heard quite a few people say this comp is pretty good, but I have yet to see a team play this comp decently. can someone clarify?

I'd guess unholy spreads dots like crazy while breaking their own CC w/ frenzy, then set up cc chain and stack necros while the ele spams lava burst and the unholy silences, gnaws, and is generally annoying to their healer. Never played it though. I don't even think there's an ele seriously playing arenas right now on my server :'(

wasn't so much looking for a strat, moreso for input on why people think it's good. And yes, Elementals are close to non-existant. Quite a shame if I may.

what others said, ele could be easily replaced with mage or spriest and you would have better comp. even lock would be better very likely, because when you meet melee that just tunnel your ele he can't do shit, wlocks can still blood fear and instant cast.
