WoW Loses 1.1M Subscribers

Posted Image

It was recently revealed that World of Warcraft has lost 1.1 million subscribers in the second quarter of 2012.

Official Blizzard Quote:

At June 30, 2012, the worldwide subscriber base for World of Warcraft was 9.1 million, compared to a subscriber base of 10.2 million at March 31, 2012, and 11.1 million at June 30, 2011, with a greater loss of subscribers in the East than in the West for both the 3-month and 12-month periods (in which the “East” includes China, Taiwan, and Korea, and the “West” includes the regions of North America and Europe).
Contributing factors to the lower subscribers were likely the launch of Diablo III in the quarter, which provided consumers with an alternative gaming experience to World of Warcraft (although Diablo III has not yet launched in China), as well as the lack of new content patches in all geographies resulting in less overall game play. Looking forward, Blizzard Entertainment expects to release World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria™ on September 25, 2012, which will deliver new game content in all regions that is expected to further appeal to the gaming community (with availability in mainland China to be announced at a later date).

The large loss of subscribers in the second quarter doesn't surprise me much. WoW is down to 9.1 million subscribers at the date of June 30, 2012 which is still quite a substantial amount. Diablo 3 was released in May 15, 2012 and that's probably one of the hugest factors to the subscriber loss. Diablo 3 had over 10million copies sold. Another reason to the subscriber loss is this long patch where no new content has been added in a while. Many who unsubscribed are likely waiting for Mists of Pandaria to come out.

Will you be playing Mists of Pandaria?

Honestly, yes.

It's not perfect, but who could expect it to be with so many things ingame now compared to what people compared was the best time for WoW?

Besides a few minor, but easily solved issues, PvP feels *right* at 90.

Yeah, Monk is so much fun on the beta. Being skilled at martial arts IRL this makes me very excited. I've always picked monk on every game, FF11,D3, even in Oblivion I was hand to hand combat spec lol. :)

Like MMO-Champ said, the big drop in Subs was likely due to Diablo 3, Summer Holidays and people having cleared all the content and waiting for MoP release.

I will definately be playing. To be honest i'm not sure how good it will be, but I don't see any other game that's interesting enough for me to waste my spare time on. Don't know what class to choose but wth, monks will probably rape me anyhow no matter what I choose.

I'll be playing for a few weeks at least because the leveling marathon with a few friends over skype is fun and I want to try out the new raids but PvP is so very boring since the resilience change so if it stays the way it is I won't be sticking around for that.

Many good changes coming with mists (of course some bad ones as well) so will get to feel it for few months until my annual pass runs out, then I will decide if I want to continue my sub.

I'm still deciding if I will. Tbh Guild Wars 2 looks a lot more promising. I have played the Beta and I have to admit that PVE and PVP are much more entertaining. But I still love WoW regardless because of the time I spent there.

Real Life requires too much skill.
