hey im just lookin for the formula for frostbolt damage. im just unsure of the spell power coefficient and things like that.

base damage + (.85 x spellpower) + etc...

somethin to that effect if anyone has one that is current for 4.3 ty

the main problem im having is figuring out where all the % increases should go and what they apply to.  things like frost specialization, is it 40% more damage after everything is calculated? or is it 40% more base damage.

base damage + (x*0.814) - so 0.81,4% of your spell power

here is an usefull site

ya but ur leaving out things like the shatter talent (+20% frostbolt damage), frost spec (+40% frostbolt damage), mastery, and possibly other things that im not aware of.

main reason im doing this is because i havent yet decided if i want to gem for mastery or int.  I know everyone is set on int, but i want to run the numbers to make sure because with the levels of int we are reaching, i want to run the numbers and make sure mastery isnt even the slightest bit better for shatters. im a math nerd, only problem is i dont have a formula to work with.

int increases your frost barrier and damage outside of frozen targets

the site is taking into consideration frost spec as you can see by the *1.4

also

New Frostbolt Against Deep Frozen Target

Normal

722 + (6000*0.814)*(1.4*1.075*1.2*1.2) = 12149
920 + (6000*0.814)*(1.4*1.075*1.2*1.2) = 12578

Critical

722 + (6000*0.814)*(1.4*1.075*1.2*1.2)*(1.5*1.33) = 24237
920 + (6000*0.814)*(1.4*1.075*1.2*1.2)*(1.5*1.33) = 25093

Ice Lance

Damage + (Spellpower*Spell Coefficient)*specialisation*Double Damage for Frozen Target*FOF Shatter Bonus*Mastery Damage

351 + (6000*0.378)*1.25*2*1.15*1.075 = 8094
351 + 2268 = 2619

447 + (6000*0.378)*1.25*2*1.15*1.075 = 8391
447 + 2268 = 2715

351 + (6000*0.378)*1.25*2*1.15*1.075*1.995 = 16147

447 + (6000*0.378)*1.25*2*1.15*1.075*1.995 = 16740

351 + (6000*0.378)*1.25*2*1.25*1.075 = 8798
351 + 2268 = 2619

447 + (6000*0.378)*1.25*2*1.25*1.075 = 9120
447 + 2268 = 2715

351 + (6000*0.378)*1.25*2*1.25*1.075*1.995 = 17552

447 + (6000*0.378)*1.25*2*1.25*1.075*1.995 = 18194

(823+(A2*0.814))*(1.4*1.2*(1+((5+2.5*B2)/100)))

this is what i got

823 is the average base frostbolt damage based on wowhead. A2 is where you would put your spellpower, and B2 is where you put your mastery rating. 1.4 from frost spec, 1.2 from shatter talent, and the long number with a bunch of parenth is the mastery calculation.

alright, then just find out how much % 1 rating of mastery gives you and you should be set :D

just curious, but when was the last time u won a game turreting frostbolts, you had no ice block and still survived survived with 200 health cause ur barrier absorbed 200 extra damage, or u ran oom? (all the benefits of running int over mastery)

now think about the last time that healer got away with 100 health?

exactly

the thing is tho .. turreting frostbolts gives you chances to proc FoF / brain freeze for even more damage .. i dont know how many games ive won with a frostbolt shatter - a good base intellect with a solid mastery is absolutely incredible i personally like gemming full intellect and reforging mastery .. you wouldnt crit as high as me if you just gemmed mastery yes you would hurt but you wouldnt nearly do as much damage as a intellect mage with mastery reforged.

i know some mages that are int+mastery gemmed with a couple int gems here and there and are sitting at 8900 spell power something in the ball park of 9100 with intellect ( my math is off i know) mean while the int mage is sitting close to 9800 and with int up i have 10.1k spell power .. reforged mastery i have 32% roughly  for extra shatter damage and ive been playing around with foul gift which increase your mastery it leads to some killer killer shatters

i kind of feel like its the same argument that mages had at the start of cata with Crit  and mastery .. sure you crit 90% of the time but your shatters didnt really do anything without mastery .. some mages do really well with one stat while others do well with another i feel it REALLY comes down to playstyle not every mage plays the same - some really rely on the whole ice lance and win tactic while others rely on deeping their kill target into a shatter
