How did we evolve into what we are? Does our DNA somehow know about our surroundings? Like, what part of us determined how to most efficiently evolve? If I can't even think in my head of any ways to make the way nature works more efficient without disrupting its harmony and balance, how does my DNA determine that?

I like the way the Matrix put it... Humans are a virus. A plague on the earth. Wherever we go we disrupt the harmony of nature. Nature is self supporting. All creatures in nature work together, and it seem like this harmony was set up to me. Did things evolve with the BIG PICTURE in mind? You'd think they'd be worried about themselves only. How did things in nature end up so harmonious? Why are we the only ones screwing it up so bad?

Food for thought. And probably a huge debate to follow.

So random mutations that may or may not be an improvement eventually made us into what we are today (obviously only the beneficial mutations were reproduced with)? And these random mutations just so happened to eventually all fall into place and make nature as harmonious as it is today?

I don't want this to turn into a religious debate. I want evolution to make sense in my head, because right now it doesn't.

Natural selection has been at work for billions of years, not sure if you realize this.

There have been tons of mutated species that simply died out because they couldn't survive.

I'm sure someone here studies biology and can explain this much better than I can.

Pretty much everything works together perfectly now because if it didn't work perfectly it wouldn't last long.

Def. natural selection.  You can actually look at changes in DNA over a very short period of time and see it at work.  That doesn't go on to prove full-blown evolution, but you can easily see DNA changes in a population over a period of a few generations.

Vindris' post history is like watching someone slowly lose their religion in text form and I have to say I'm enjoying it.

Humans are a part of nature, not separate from it.

Btw, can someone explain what social darwinism is? I heard it mentioned in a discussion about evolution and greed but didn't know what it was

I remember reading that Island's are the exception to natural selection, can't remember who said it.
