The current state of Ice Barrier seems very underwhelming when compared to other shields. Ice barrier is an iconic frost mage spell, and yet the best thing about it is the nova when it breaks almost immediately. Before continuing, here's some numbers:

How much Ice Barrier absorbs:

Ice Barrier (no glyph, no trinket procs): 9151 (6771 sp)
Ice Barrier (no glyph, with trinket procs): 12236 (10594 sp)
Ice Barrier (glyphed, no trinket procs): 10257 (6771 sp)
Ice Barrier (glyphed, with trinket procs): 13773 (10594 sp)

For reference:
Ice Barrier Level 80
21% of base mana
Instant cast 30 sec cooldown
Instantly shields you, absorbing (3300 + $SPFR * 0.807) damage. Lasts 1 min. While the shield holds, spellcasting will not be delayed by damage.

Ice Barrier Level 85
21% of base mana
Instant cast 30 sec cooldown
Instantly shields you, absorbing (3686 + $SPFR * 0.807) damage. Lasts 1 min. While the shield holds, spellcasting will not be delayed by damage.

Analysis
When we moved from level 70 to 80, ice barrier absorption was increased by roughly 3x, and this is when hp pools essentially doubled. Now that hp pools have been more than tripled, ice barrier has hardly increased at all.

Very few mages are even glyphing for it currently since it only increases its effect by slightly over 1k, which is negligible when people have over 110k hp. Of course Ice barrier will absorb more later in cata when mages have more sp, but it will scale even less than other player's damage. This will leave Ice Barrier in an even worse position towards the end of this expansion.

Even if Blizzard doesn't want to increase the base absorption of Ice Barrier or change the mana cost, they should at least increase the effect of the glyph. Using a major glyph to increase Ice barrier's absorption by less than 1% of my total hp is worthless.

Possible Changes regarding Ice Barrier

-Remove Shattered Barrier, change talent to Improved Ice Barrier (increases absorption).

-Change Reactive Barrier to something which gives dispel protection to Ice Barrier.

-Change glyph of Ice Barrier to something actually useful (more absorption than it currently is or removes GCD caused by casting Ice Barrier).

Edit #2: Added possible changes.

Of course it should be buffed. ~10k Absorb on a 115k Health pool is awful, worse than it was in TBC even. Gear alone won't make the difference, you'd need something like 20k Spell power to get IB even close to where it was in Wrath.

I think the idea was to nerf IB and let Health Pools take over, on the off chance it might make something other than Frost PvP viable. That sure did work out.

If we need more survivability it shouldn't come from Ice Barrier... even though Fire/Arcane aren't PvP viable, changes should be made that promote survivability parity between specs.

If anything they should remove the GCD from ice barrier, not being able to use it at low health because you're worried about dying in that GCD is pretty lame.

In my opinion, this is what the glyph should do. Blizzard would have to increase the base absorption by a huge amount for glyph of ice barrier to actually be worthwhile. If instead, the glyph removed the GCD, it would be a useful glyph to have.

they can buff ice barrier if they remove atleast 3 of your 15 novas

i like to exaggerate to make a point even though it destroys my credibility.

Warlocks' Voidwalker Sacrifice has the same problem. At lvl 80 it absorbed ~8k wich was roughly 25% of your health not it absorbs ~9.5k wich is less than 10% of your total HP in crapgear.

Buffing IB would nerf Shatter Barrier, since you'd have more time to dispel it before it popped.

As it stands right now IB is almost just another Frost Nova. If I hit it while taking damage it's generally broken by the time my GCD cycles.

How about you change those numbers to reflect your shatter crits while everyone sits in your novas and ring of frosts.

Whoa man, you can't say anything that isn't negative about a Mage as a Warlock. It's a rule.
