So the big day for me comes this Tuesday where I am required to make the decision on whether I want to play ret or prot/ret this season. I would like to discuss the ups and downs of each spec in comparison to each other.

As far as I see it, here are the current viable prot/ret and ret teams for me:

Ret/Arms/RDruid (what I currently play and what I achieved glad with)
Prot/Arms/RDruid

Ret/MM/RDruid
Prot/MM/RDruid

Prot/Affliction/RDruid (as played by Lynxo)

-Discussing the comps I have listed in order, out of the two comps with an arms warrior, I heard that prot was much stronger for the comp last season, which I assume it is still strong this season also. I currently play a 0/19/52 command spec for more defensive capabilities this season, so it seems that prot would work even better.

-Moving onto hunters, I hear as far as comps go, prot pairs with a resto druid and hunter well. Would playing ret with that team be impairing as opposed to playing prot? I haven't seen any high rated teams that run with a ret paladin.

-As far as the affliction lock, I am not quite sure how well this comp works except for Lynxo's input on it.

Now that comps have been discussed, I would like to discuss gear options. I am very limited as to what PvE gear I am have access to, the first wing of ICC 25 is pretty much the extent of it at the moment.

My first question is which shield to use. I have gathered a list of shields here in order of availability to me:

1) Wrathful Gladiator's Barrier (iLvl 270) (Healer shield w/ crit)
2) Neverending Winter (iLvl 251)
3) Crystal Plated Vanguard (iLvl 258)

-Which shield would be the most ideal to use for prot out of those? Would using the wrathful shield be absolutely impairing to my damage as prot?

As far as offset pieces go, I have access to most pieces containing strength that would be ideal.

As for going straight ret, I have already planned what my ending gear would look like, I have no questions there.

So my final question is, which spec seems stronger to me based on the circumstances?

Thanks in advance, sorry for the long post, I wanted to make sure I was thorough.

i heard that alot of Prets are going with the healer shield because they dont need the extra resi+stam, and the crit on it helps.

dont hate me if this is incorrect, ive just seen it around.

People should have been more stubborn and just stuck with Ret as the DPS spec. When it ended up not working out they could have cried about it on the Blizzard forums and then perhaps Ret Paladins would have received much needed buffs. Hey, it seems to have worked for DKs.

Ranting aside, both specs are viable and Ret isn't that soft with the new resilience changes.

This.

and since last season, ret has seemed to make a higher apperance than prot. I think if you want to play with a hunter you are really going to hate prot, to me it just feels less mobile and gimp when play with a hunter

You do the same amount of damage as prot but you get to do it with a shield on, incredible survivability, and glyphed avenger's shield is so clutch.

There's no reason to not be be prot. Personally, if your healer gives you the choice, you should feel loved. I'd just find another paladin if they didn't wanna go prot ;P

Yeah I know, it's stupid. But my question still stands, is the gear available to me as prot good enough for me to do well in arena?

If all the PvE prot gear you have to you is that sheild, i would use the crstal plated w/e. I'm pretty sure you want to have a little bit of block value because the damage cap for shield of righteousness is 2750.

usually with my str and that i have around 1800 block value and 2600 when my deathverdict/greatness procs

My Paladin wears the same gear. Not a whole lot of PvE gear is needed to be effective. Obviously if you have some that's great but it's not necessary to win and still makes it stronger than ret.

This thread wasn't made for people to state their opinions on whether or not Prot is a dumb spec.

Prot is, in my opinion, better by a longshot if you're running with an Arms Warrior and a Resto Druid.

It all comes down to playstyle and what you're more comfortable with. Also, use the 258 PvE Shield, always go with your highest Strength option.

Using a 232 shield and random strength offpieces, I'm at 5583 AP unbuffed with 36.42% crit and 700 resilience.

Since resi change you should just man it out as ret.

Anyone who plays Protret with a healer in 2s should be shot!
