Prot (15/3/53) by Fierss

Just made it. I think the talent point usage is pretty straightforward. You need some damage, since you probably won't be focused much, but I also specced into basically every utility talent.

I don't think prot is particularly amazing right now, but it would be viable with the right partner, and seems like it would be a lot of fun to play.

I realize people don't like prot as a pvp spec. And I don't either. However, if people are to try it, as some are bound to do, judging from the fact that I was asked to make a spec in the first place, I don't see why this is rated so poorly. Feel free to suggest changes, so I can get them made.

I've never been remotely close to Gladiator status myself, but I love to PvP as a Warrior and have been messing around with it a bit as Prot. IMO:
1. I feel it's more viable in 2's and smaller scale engagements. In 5's, 4 dps teams will just punch right through your Safeguard-Intervene like it's nothing =(
2. Piercing Howl is practically mandatory. Not so much for keeping a target in range; as Prot w/ Warbringer, I feel I have the most mobility out of any Warrior spec, but for keeping targets from reaching your teammate (in my case, my holy pally). Against double dps comps that snare can really save your partner and give them just that added time to get a heal off.
3. I'm not a huge fan of the Imp. Defensive Stance Enrage. The reduced spell damage is nice but again it works only in Defensive Stance, and only off of avoidance. Personally, if I'm going for Piercing Howl, I'd rather drop 20 into Fury to get Enrage and have that 30% chance to proc off of any attack while also having the freedom to be in any stance.
4. I'm not a huge fan if Imp. Disarm. I think I saw a post a long time ago by Billtehcat during S4 that basically summed it up; when going for a burst-down you really don't have the time to waste getting into Defensive Stance and getting that Disarm off. Also, anybody with a weapon chain or disarm reduction basically cuts the effectiveness of the talent by 50%; ouch =\
5. My personal spec for Prot PvP so far has been 0/20/51. Overall, I like it a lot, even in my bad gear I feel it's giving me a fighting chance vs. DK's, Ret Pallies, Rogues, etc. Healers (and especially Sacred Shield spamming Pallies) give me a bit more trouble as my white damage just isn't there to brute force my way through shields. But, from what I've seen on these forums, this is a problem not just specific to Prot. I've heard of 15/5/51 being decent too, Deep Wounds is amazing for any Warrior build, but again, I prefer getting Piercing Howl and having that extra option of control vs. extra dps.

i love it and scyion i disagree that fury gives you more of an edge in pvp seeing as improved charge = more rage more flexible and the tactical masteryand iron will a must have for pvp seeing as ur stance dancing to some extent sometimes

While pvping in prot, I found resil helps you more than the defense rating has. So instead of buffing in def. for pvp, I personally like to up my avoidance and use resil. Just a little something I wanted to throw out there. Also the two points in disarm is worth it.

What weapon enchant shud u use in pvp prot? Mongoose?
ScyionJan 28, 2009 - 4:46 PM (HideShow)
I went with a Titanium Weapon Chain rather than an enchant. There are just way too many Rogues out there and getting smacked with a full 10 sec Dismantle is just awful. The highest rated Prot. Warrior that I've seen on the boards thus far (Alloraan-Daggerspine) also uses a chain over an enchant as well. His spec is also a bit different than any other Prot. Warrior spec I've seen, at 13/6/52.

as prot warrior i use titaanium weapon chain b/c of disarm effect and some more hit rating. the only thing i have trouble with are priests. even though i spam my shield slam the priests keep putting healing effects on them selves and shielding themselves. but i defiantly distract the healer from doing their primary job. just as long as my arena team member does his job we do well in arena. the spec i roll with is 9/8/54. it works perfect against any melee class and i even arena in tank gear with my d rating capped. its a different apprach but i always die last in arena and give enemies the all out fight. i just need a spec where i can hold my own agianst enemies, but also do enough damage to ememies so i can help our team get out of the dump of arena. team member is fire mage and we can not seem to surpass a decent arena score.

Been playing using protection spec since season 4. The best way to describe it is a rogue with less burst and no stealth, but a lot more survivability. Protection warriors unlike others doesn't do well with a healer, the whole point of being one is so healing is not mandatory. You want to partner with a class with good bursts. Stay all over the healer if against a team that's dps/heal. Double dps teams will rarely beat you. Biggest weakness is lack of hamstring in defensive stance, so either have to stance dance a little bit or have a very mobile partner.

I am currently running with a feral druid, usually do fine, except paladin healer teams. Bubble prevents a quick kill on the pally. Sacred shield spam rage starves me. But other than that, there have yet been a combo where we feel there isn't much we can do to beat.

would a prot warrior and a rogue do fine together?

the bleeding dmg from a 1hander isn't worth the 3/3 impale

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=LG0f0bZhxZiczrgbzibIzsGo

is what i'd go with a proper macro for going to berserker stance -> popping recklessness -> using execute or even (don't know if gcds allow) casting bloodrage after stancedancing then recklessness+execute.

biggest problem with prot imo is indeed the lack of slowing effects. (blizz can fix this by not letting mages frost armor put the slowing on us when using heroic throw). But once we're at a caster they're basically doomed as you can rotate stuns and interrupts to an almost absolute lockdown. (i.e. charge -> shieldbash first cast (12sec cd+3sec silence) -> concussion blow next cast (30sec cd 5sec stun) -> intimidating shout next cast (3min cd 8sec fear) leading into a new chargestun (1,5sec) OR heroic throw (1min cd 3 sec silence) -> leading back into shockwave which is 20 sec. All in that your shieldbash has resetted CD, your conc blow MIGHT have and after that you can still always stance dance intercept stun and after thatshockwave should be viable again. Casters taste best with ketchup btw.

i left out vigilance, could put it in as well saving your partner 3%dmg taken + free taunts (free taunts who gives a shit) any class with a pet gives a shit cause you CAN taunt pets forcing them to 1 become your ragefeed and 2 not annoy your mate.

I started with a spec similar to this but have since been using Alloraan's 13/6/52 build. For tanking I use a similar 15/5/51 build, which does great when you're being hit, but the 13/6/52 setup is much better for pvp because it focuses on rage maintenance.

By taking improved heroic strike, anger management, improved bloodrage, puncture and focused rage, it is much harder to become rage starved when trying to chase down an opponent. As everyone knows, a warrior with no rage is worthless. Deep wounds is not taken because burst is more effective than the light bleed it applies. Toughness is also not necessary because warbringer removes movement slowing effects, so the 30% reduction is often never used.

I went with prot because I didn't want to be pidgeon holed into a cookie cutter spec and require a pocket healer at all times. Once trying it I fell in love with it. With the right gear, the burst damage can be dowright amazing. I've seen a 15K self buffed shield slam on a warlock, immediately preceded by a 5K conc blow. No one sees that coming when a prot warrior charges them. Beyond that, the mobility is awesome, survival is great, and there is no need to macro gear changes for spell reflects or shield bashes.

This may sound totally noobish, but one of the best parts is never having to leave defensive stance when being attacked. When chasing a healer and not taking damage, going to battle is needed to hamstring and for the 10% more damage. But if the warrior is getting hit by any physical damage then enrage will most likely be up, making defensive stance just as good as battle.

One downside to this spec is it requires doing a lot of PvE to gear properly. Since no pvp gear has block value, and the pvp necks and rings have AP rather than Str, the best gear set ups are going to be a mix of block value defensive gear (gemmed and enchanted for str and crit) mixed with dps/pvp gear. Getting the tanking pieces may be difficult for some dps warriors, and not worth it for those who don't like to raid.

Ryuke your specc is good but you need improved charge or you'll never get a good start..

This is the build i got gladiator with my prot warrior http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#LVMhzbZhLZVcdrMfzibIdsGo:dcpM0z

The spec here is bad, only one point in focused rage? No cruelty? No puncture? And why do you have 3 points in imp thunderclap? Its a pretty useless ability.
CrimxnwolfOct 11, 2009 - 4:01 PM (HideShow)
Inris could i possibly know how you were geared for this? Because i certainly understand and dont underestimate how devastating (pun intended) prot can be. some tips would be appreciated :)
