Why the 3 points in clearcasting instead of the armor bonus from arcane fortitude?
FailbaneJan 4, 2009 - 6:07 PM (HideShow)
Full in Frost Channeling, and why Imp CoC?, having 2 points in Frostbite is also enough.
HellbendrJan 8, 2009 - 12:27 AM (HideShow)
As well instead of taking one point from Frostbite you could take the one from Brain Freeze + Imp CoC to fill Frost Channeling. Depends on your preferences though. Greater chance for multiple critting Ice Lances, or greater chance for a spell to provide additional burst.
KitherJan 8, 2009 - 5:49 PM (HideShow)
Why 2 points in magic attunement?
Most classes will just, and can debuff it?
Thats 2 points waste imo :)
MassacrationJan 9, 2009 - 11:32 AM (HideShow)
In First time need kill enemy in 5 seconds and survevey.

In ARCANE Spells

Removed points in Arcane Concentration
Add put points in Arcane Fortitude
the bursted in Arena are big, no have time for Arcane Concentration

In FROST Spells
Remove Points in Ice Floes / Cold as Ice / Improved Cone of Cold(mage fight far enemy's)
Add Put in Points in Frozen Core / Arctic Winds / Improved Cone of Cold
the bursted in Arena are big, no have time for Ice Floes / Cold as Ice

etc etc

flw my build in future

Kither, 6+ range on all arcane spell isn't 2 tp waste, why would you even think of that? polymorph, cs is one of the most useful spells a mage will have in arena.

Massacration, why would you put 1/3 in torment of the weak, which gives 4% dmg, 2 talentpoints more would've given 12%, thats 8% dmg in 2 tps, and then u have 3/3 piercing ice, which is 3 tps for 6% dmg? and you mean a mage don't need 6 more range on spells in arena? lol. and the 3 tps u used in Frozen Core for 6% less magic dmg taken, is just a waste, since when did mages have problems vs casters? and even, why would we listen to a level 65 mage?
ScarmanJan 11, 2009 - 7:59 PM (HideShow)
has anyone given deep fire/ arcane a chance?
could be deadly in any comp at bursting both people.
probably would be hard but would have to be paired up with at least 1 unholy dk (for death grip and more aoe dmg)

Phenomenon
This coomment was not good for this forum: why would we listen to a level 65 mage?
I have Mage Ally in Gurubashi level 77
We are almost in the same level.. If you pay attention, and I'm not here to listen your comments: you and your level... Come on! Are you better than me?? I'm course not.... =)
Whatever, sometimes a "novate" may become better than you in a short time...

these talents are fine tho
VeeráJan 18, 2009 - 3:20 PM (HideShow)
not keen on this speck coz of the random arcane talents. why clearcasting if you havent got the talent to increase crit chance when you're clearcasting? and why only 3 points? random! and magic absorbtion is really not neede because running oom isent the greaset problem for mages as you're either the winner or you're dead before you're oom and you cant rely on resisting anyway. The talents should have been put on improved cone of cold coz its an incredible move and one point on frost channeling is pointless. Im not keen on this speck tbh
OsterJan 24, 2009 - 1:42 AM (HideShow)
i propose that massacration is a downy, this comment was totally well thought out and it put lots of insight into your spec, so dont tell me otherwise
KatelynFeb 2, 2009 - 1:02 PM (HideShow)
Haha, big rofl at some of your comments :D

The specc is quite good. Remove frost channeling though. Go for arctic winds or imp coc.

You could also consider not speccing torment of the weak and put those 3 points in arctic winds instead, with your other 2 remaning points (from imp coc and frost chan).

Veerá are you stupid or something? ofc you need magic absorbtion, haha, one of the best arcane spells. You do realise you take less damage when you got more resistance yes? + you got a pretty big chance to fully resist spells.

Massacration: Your giving him scrub tips aswell. Dont even comment if you dont know shit man.

It's really annoying when people with no clue are commenting. Just go armory some highly respected mage and steal his specc if u cant do it yourself. However, the majority is sadly playing arcane.

The changes i would have done, and will do in my next pvp spec is:
Arcane Tree:
-3p from Arcane Concentration
+3p to Arcane Fortitude
Clear casting is just a useless talent in pvp unless you Arcane Potency.

Frost Tree:
-1p Frost Channeling
+1p Improved CoC
-4% mana costs wont save you in the arena when it looks like it does today. CoC is a rly usefull spell so some extra +dmg for that would be better.

But otherwise a rly good frost spec, the only thing i can think of that some might want to change is to remove points from torment of the weak and fill imp CoC and maybe 2p in Artic Winds. But for the +dmg in Artic Winds its not worth it, it would be more for the -hit, but since you dont need much +hit to be caped for atleast ranged, 2-hander and special attacks im not sure that would help alot.
This is what i will go for.
TakeherdownFeb 24, 2009 - 6:38 PM (HideShow)
this is the spec i run with:

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ofcbf0McZZAIbIobu0fdMfot

its also what ive seen alot of top mages running with lately.

The frost warding 2/2 is actually very usefull in this spec, for the armor increase and the 30% chance to negate fire and frost and return as mana while warded, you just gotta manage it properly.(fire and frost dmg are showing up in alot of classes lately, it also works with the hunter's explosive shot)
RiftsMar 2, 2009 - 10:31 PM (HideShow)
I have a question about artic winds vs chilled to the bone. I have seen many mages with artic winds and no c2tb. They are very similar, the main difference is that one covers all frost spells, the other only 3. Also its 5% reduce chance to be hit vs 10% reduce movement speed, which if you have permafrost should be not worth it?

So its -
10% damage to fb and IL + 10% reduce movement speed
vs.
10% damage to all Ice + 5% reduced change to be hit by range/melee

Im assuming that they would stack also? but never seen a mage with both.
TakeherdownMar 5, 2009 - 5:50 PM (HideShow)
its preference really, the FB and IL dmg increase is all you need, the 5% to all frost spells really doesn't matter much cuss its only adding more dmg to cone of cold and frost nova...which are not used for there dmg but their effect. I find the the 10% more snare is alot more useful then the 5% less chance to miss. your cone of cold will have a snare of 70% which is on par with rogues crippling poison and will allow you to stay out of reach when your snared urself. likewise frost armor will be at 50% snare which is on par with hamstring/frostshock etc. To me thats more valuable then the 5% chance to miss.
AmatoxMar 9, 2009 - 5:24 PM (HideShow)
Imo take the 3 from clearcasting, put them in arcane fort. Also take the points from permafrost, imp COC and frost channeling, put them in 2/2 frost warding (for DK's and RMP mirrors) then put the other 3 into arctic winds. Arctic winds is far superior to permafrost/Imp CoC/frost channeling.
KáoszMar 10, 2009 - 10:53 AM (HideShow)
Sorry all but I dont agree with frost, arcane, and mixed talents...
A good player doesnt need to have the best gear or the best talents, it depends from experience! But its just My opinion...
Im think frost is only for slowing down the whole match, arcane is "cheap" and fire is a burst of damage.

My talents : 00/68/03
I took Ice Floes insteed of Improved Fireball becouse I dont use Fireball anymore (Frostfireball). Playing with fire is "Showing up / Making everyone embarrassed with rapidity and speediness / Fading away" ... you know, like a sugar rush :)
I got a lots of explanation why Frost is better in PvP, but I dont believe that only frost can be good in it.
Told ya ... ***Depends from the player!***
NoxonMar 14, 2009 - 5:04 PM (HideShow)
I can't figure out why no one mage a fire/arcane pvp mage specc, it will be able to solo more classes than a frost mage ever will.
But I know that frost mage don't need as many skills as fire in pvp..

as firemage you will be able to disarm ranged/melee while you are under 35% hp and cast pyroblast in 1,5 sec (without haste rating)
and as firemage you will be able to stop casters from casting with your aoe's easier than frost.
But a firemage have to learn to spellsteal, I don't get it - firemage can down another mage so easy in pvp, if he/she meet like a frost mage, spell steal Ice Barrier and Icy Veins.
And there you go, he can't dmg you for a good time and then he/she can, you can just go spell steal another ice barrier.

Btw- a tip to mage who want to try this out, do not use fireball-> waste of casting time, use scorch instead. (2 crits => instant pyroblast, in 3 seconds(without haste rating))
SteviewonderMar 16, 2009 - 4:09 PM (HideShow)
And what about the brain freeze i dont use it becouse we have too much freezes from the elemental shatered barrier fingers of frost frost nova and frost bite i think the global cd is too long for a fireball and the ice lance better than it.
KapparhMar 19, 2009 - 9:12 PM (HideShow)
Well, actually im using 1 point more in arcane, and getting POM, instead of deep freeze, since the nuke is better imo, but then again, im playing with a rogue... :)
KaÿmordiusMar 22, 2009 - 9:42 PM (HideShow)
You should not put points into Focus Magic in the arcane tree if your team doesnt have another caster, my 2v2 team is mage/rogue, i put the point into 2% more ice lance damage.
FixinaMar 28, 2009 - 12:20 PM (HideShow)
Hi, the spec im going for and the one i mean is best for solo and 2v2 is this one (http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ofcbf0McZZAI0IobubfdMfot), u can ofc vary between 2pts in imp CoC and artic winds, that all comes down to play style and if u use CoC a lot or not. If u are in a 2v2 with another caster or in 3v3/5v5 u should drop 1pt in spell impact and pick up the Focus magic talent...

http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ofcbf0McZZAI0IobubfdMfot
OtakuMar 29, 2009 - 6:57 PM (HideShow)
brain freeze is good actualy when it procs shoot a frostbolt then right before the Fb casts push the button that shoots fireball and if u time it right u can get the frostbolt and the fireball a split second after each other making u wait on the GcD then if your frosbite procs spam ice lance / deepfreeze its what i do ticks people off

The best pvp spec for a mage right now is 20/0/51 as follows
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=ofcbf0McZZAIbIobu0fdMfot
there is also a nice frie/frost spec out their too 0/27/44

Why is elemental precision bad? Are Mages expected to be hit capped without it?
DirtymitchelApr 21, 2009 - 2:04 PM (HideShow)
For arena I still think it's worth it to get Arctic Winds. What do you need cold as ice for if you have cold snap anyway in arena? Not to mention arenas end very quickly in this expansion anyway. Any thoughts on another way to get Arctic winds? I am in all deadly gear and have been gemming all reckless monarch topaz for haste. And bought those haste trinks n what not from the WG quartermaster so that extra 5% dmg from Arctic winds would be nice IMO.
JamesbondxApr 27, 2009 - 4:31 AM (HideShow)
what a big waste of points ..
[Arctic Winds] is worth to get rather than wasting points on another stuff , i got now like 400 haste and still need more so i would need every extra amount of damage to cover the lost Spell Power for the sake of adding haste .also 5 % redcued chance to hit isnt low .

[Arcane Concentration] vs [Arcane Fortitude] is ur personal preference

[Focus Magic] is a useless talent .

[Frost Warding] is a "must take talent" i recommend u read it very well 3 times .

[Frost Channeling] and [Improved Cone of Cold] that was a BIG waste of points .
and [Permafrost] it depends on ur personal preference .

u might be interested of taking a look at this :

i think this is the best talent tree for frost mages , not coz im using it ..but that what i think ..
some of u might as "why not 3\3 [Winter Chill] ? " i say 66 % is enough tbh , the use of this talent is to stack the winterchill debuff on ur tar so it would be harder to dispel him once hes CCed .IMO
CraelMay 2, 2009 - 5:47 PM (HideShow)
Took a look at the standard 20/00/51 and figured out a way to get the Arctic Wind together with Chilled to the Bone. Haven't got time to check it out yet, but in my opinion it looks pretty descent. General idea is to remove the the 3 points in Brain Freeze and the 2 points in Shattered Barrier and you have your 5 points for Arctic Winds. Now's the question if the 5% reduced hit to opposite players is enough to make up for the loss of the Oh Shit! freeze from Shattered Barrier? Anyway, here's the exact spec I'm thinking of:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent#ofcbf0McZZAIbIobu0fzgbot
JobeyJun 2, 2009 - 10:23 AM (HideShow)
I can agree with the shattered barrier thing but i don't think that its worth losing that free fireball now and then but from there everything else looks good... idk 2% damage and reduced chance to be hit or nova on barrier brake i guess its pure opinion.
TwiÑkyJun 22, 2009 - 8:36 PM (HideShow)
i dont know why some of you think the little 900 armor from the arcane fortitude is going to help you much and this arctic winds stuff really doesnt help much yea u may get that little miss every here and there but thats reallly not going to save you.
TriptonicJul 7, 2009 - 1:41 PM (HideShow)

wow, some of the ideas and advice rolling out on these specs makes me wonder wtf?

MageguyJul 12, 2009 - 1:22 PM (HideShow)
I wouldn't recommend clearcasting 3/5 over arcane fortitude, which gives about 6% physical damage reduction for geared people. IMO the talents used in Cone of Cold and Frost Channeling should be put in Frost Warding. Frost warding is very useful in many ways, you get even more armor from Ice Armor and if you ever go against another frost mage you will be glad you got this, because if the other frost mage has this and you don't, you will oom way faster than him.

this is what i am using atm... i like mirror image over icy veins cause i play a gnome and i think that my racial makes up for the icy veins remove slow... and my casting speed does not get slowed that often so.

Best spec atm imo. yes the arcane fort... is not worth it. imo.

I'm going to take 3 points out of clear casting and put it in arcane fortitude to have little bit more survivability against melee, Take 1 out of frost channeling and 1 out of imp CoC then put 2 in frost warding because it goes great with the imp warding glyphs
AideriusAug 20, 2009 - 2:14 PM (HideShow)
agree with Scootypuffjr. mine has that set up. the only other change i have on mine which is completely situational is that i took the FM out and put it in Spell Impact. I like the extra boost on ice lance, coc and fireball for my procs.

I know I'll prob get flamed for this but I didn't think torment the weak was activated by any other mage spells besides slow - I THOUGHT it worked with FB but apparently not. So if you aren't playing with another class who can put ttw on should I put the tp somewhere else? Or is my fb information totally wrong (which I really hope it is)
BazapNov 9, 2009 - 10:03 AM (HideShow)
@Necroslasher
TotW works based on any slow, including attackspeed slows from thunderclap, or from any snares we provide, frostbolt, frostfire, cone of cold, etc.

Also i'll add this much, i've spent a lot of time and tried many specs and i'll state this much.

Mana isn't a large enough concern to put points into clearcasting or frost-channelng. Its slightly better to put the points into talents that will help keep you alive.

Grab Arcane Fortutude. The 1200 or so armor it provides has saved my life more times then i could count.
If you ever iceblock vs a melee class with less then 1k life remaining, you can thank those talents.

Frost Warding is an often overlooked talent.
It improves your frost-armor, which if your ever being attacked by melee is the armor of choice. Getting an additional 900 armor is always nice. And remember armor scales with gear.

The other thing which it does which is seriously underrated is that it buffs your frost/fire wards by over 30%, and converts it into mana.

Destro Locks
Non-enhance shamans
Hunters
Disc priests (hey, they sometimes try to dps mages)

The mana it supplies can often be converted straght into a mana-shield if you have the mana to burn afterwards.

The alternitives to frost-warding are limited by comparasion. Give it a try, find a destro lock, and have fun. Its won me a few games that i'd otherwise have lost due to being oom (via mana burning)

The final 2 things i'd like to point out.
Take 1 point out of winter's chill, and put it into Enduring winter. You loose 1% crit, but gain abot 70% uptime on replenishment. That 1 point in replenishment will return more mana then any of the other mana talents possible.

The other thing i'll add.
Between chilled to the bone, and arctic winds, CotB is superior.
Its great fun when arctic winds causes that warrior to miss a mortal strike, or a rogue to fail cheapshot, but its far more dangerious to let that healer run around a pillar and pop-turret heal.

Reducing them from 50% runspeed to 40% runspeed is a reduction of 20%. Its mas
