Unholy (21/0/50) by Ova

Rationale for some talent choices... Unholy blight is not a pvp talent, meaning 21 into blood for Mark of Blood, Rune Tap, and dps talents give you far more bang for your buck. Reaping is taken for burst potential and greater versatility. Wandering plague, impurity, and RoR are damage increasing talents that simply don't fit into this unholy pvp build without sacrificing more valuable utility.

Unholy aura could have a place in some make-ups, but it is largely unneccessary and would need to pull from more valuable talents. The ghoul pet is extemely valuable, so Night of the Dead is required. He's a squishy little guy. A point is taken in corpse explosion because it is getting a significant buff with the upcoming patch, and should be very worth it for bursting, especially combined with NotD for an instant re-summon.

Heyyyyyyy comments. I may as well add that I've been speccing out of magic suppression and AMZ and into unholy aura and wandering plague for smaller brackets depending on what I'm running. AMZ is definitely an amazing talent, but it's a bit awkward to use sometimes and not necessary for some smaller bracket teams.
ZiglieJan 1, 2009 - 5:17 AM (HideShow)
I like the build alot, but i find that you can tweak the unholy build alot with the different comps you run... I normally run with a rogue, so i usually spec out of desecration and put them in Rage of Rivendare. Any thoughts of where i could put the left over talents while specced out of desecration, other than RoR
WarlockadinJan 1, 2009 - 11:53 PM (HideShow)
I dont understand the need for the talent point in corpse explosion. Plz explain
OvaJan 2, 2009 - 9:56 AM (HideShow)
Ziglie - I think desecration has a lot of uses outside of a simple snare that make it worth taking even if you're paired with another snaring partner. It's aoe, it stays on the ground so your teammates can kite over it ala frost trap, and druids can't shapeshift out of it to get away. If you are dead-set on speccing into something else, I would probably stick the points in wandering plague or impurity.

Warlockadin - If you read my comments above the spec, you'll see that the point is put in CE under the assumption that it will receive a big enough buff in the upcoming patch to make it worthwhile. If it still sucks, I'll remove that point and stick it back in impurity.
UndercityorcJan 2, 2009 - 2:46 PM (HideShow)
When running with a resto shaman, would the AMZ points be well spent or would you spec out of them. 2v2 bracket
TripletteJan 2, 2009 - 7:28 PM (HideShow)
When running with a holy Paladin in the 2v2 bracket would you suggest taking AMZ or no?
OvaJan 2, 2009 - 7:46 PM (HideShow)
Undercityorc and Triplette - I haven't had the chance to run with a resto shaman or paladin in 2s yet, so I really can't give a definitive answer. Hopefully others that have played these comps will post here. Most of the high rated DK/Hpallies I've seen and talked to have opted to skip out on AMZ and pick up more dps talents instead. The main drawback of AMZ is that it is essentially a 6 point talent.
BustyJan 5, 2009 - 2:37 AM (HideShow)
I was told that this is a burst type of spec..im arenaing with a ret paladin and it seems that most of the time i never see any burst just dots and minor dmg bursts. my "rotation" if u would like to do my most dmg is PS IT SS BSx2...is there anything wrong with it? could u tell me a good way to do more burst?
EsøtericJan 6, 2009 - 11:23 AM (HideShow)
I play with a Warlock in 2v2 at the moment, will we be able to get far together or is it just going to be a waste of time? Any suggestions? What is the best 2v2 arena partner for a Death Knight at the moment? Please message my profile. Thanks for your time
AffoeJan 8, 2009 - 8:41 AM (HideShow)
what minor and what greater glyphs would you suggest?
(after the upcoming patch)

BlightnessJan 8, 2009 - 6:06 PM (HideShow)
this spec has many flaws, dont use it if you want a good spec
RegretJan 9, 2009 - 12:49 PM (HideShow)
@ Blightness - While there is a point here or there I don't agree with, its hard to throw it out and completely dismiss it based on the lack of information on where its flaws are and given your rating of about 1540 in 2's.

Aside from a few preference points to switch here and there the ONLY talent I'd never run without in 21/0/50 is Unholy Aura. For 2 pts it really helps out alot.
BlightnessJan 11, 2009 - 3:36 AM (HideShow)
some of us dont get full vualt sets k thanks check my rating at the end of the week i was playing with an undergeared disc priest and we stopped at that rating to farm the deadly belt and neck, btw l2read 1640 is different than 1540 and unholy aura isnt worth the points imo, you should be using unholy for the quick burst damage and if you have to d up into frost pressence you probably wont be chasing anyone so the 15% is a waste of points imo. I wouldnt bother with am zone either for 2's its rare that a healer will want to stand in the zone and be beat on relentlessly. Its rarely useful, try keeping an opponent in it. You definatly want impurity as well at least 4 points, the spell damage and disease damage you get out of it is amazing. In the blood tree you want full bladed armor, instead of 1% of the crit, it equates to alot more damage. dirge isnt really worth it either, ive never had trouble generating more than enough rp - if you have any questions send them this way <---
MogtharJan 11, 2009 - 5:09 PM (HideShow)
I honestly think subversion and butchery are quite useless for a unholy Dk in arena, it only will affect your blood strike and its not even a big source of damage its just for death runes, and butchery since your not killing people more than once in arena its pointless, I put all 5 points into blade barrier its just less damage taken more chance to proc rune strike which is alot better than some extra crit on one strike and a couple runic power per five. Everything else looks fine though I would have points into impurity
BlightnessJan 12, 2009 - 1:27 AM (HideShow)
the runic power every 5 seconds is worth it becuase its more dc spam especially on long fights, and your almost always in combat in arena's and butchery is better than the parry imo becuase i have not once been focused in any arena. Just about any class is easier to kill than a dk.
BlightnessJan 12, 2009 - 2:19 AM (HideShow)
i take back what i said about dirge in long fights it is worth the points. depends what comp your running. i prefer healeer/dps comps so im starting to like it now
ShortyxJan 15, 2009 - 11:14 PM (HideShow)
This is not the unholy blood pvp spec i would choose Reasons:
1: Corpse Explosion. (even after the patch GL getting ure inteligent oponent to stand on his partners dead body.)
2: No wandering plague. this increases your dot dps by 30% on 1 target atm my dots do about 700 dps in 3's or 5's you can pestilence and do stupid burst dmg with a DND glyph on top.
3: Full descecration imo this is a more 5% increased pve talent because you don't move any smart opponent in arena is going to move out of it making you move out of it since you are melee i would only suggest getting it if u play a team with a hunter because frost trap and desc means the ground is blanketed in 50% snares.
4: this is mainly my opinion maybe its just beacuse i don't have a ton of pve gear i go 24/0/47 so i can get Vet of the Third War its a 800 hp increase and 150ap or so and not to mention. I skip AMZ i think the prerequesite is just too costly and its only 15-17k dmg absorbed and u can't really stand in it cause once again ure maily maybe good for a partner in arena but sides ARcane mages which can eat up a AMZ in 2 arcane barrages msot dmg in high end arena coems from rogue's/hunters/DK's/Tg warriors etc not to many casters seen in highend atleast from personal experience. i would rather get the dmg increasers.
5: Dirge. maybe after a while in long fights its ok but it only adds 10rp a rotation (IT,PS,SS,BS,BS) so its like an extra 1 RP a second if you look at it that way and alot of people don't get butchery and thats 2 RP a second in combat.

Maybe this spec works for some people i just don't like it =(
ShortyxJan 15, 2009 - 11:17 PM (HideShow)
Sry 2 RP every 5seconds still almost as good as dirge and when i said burst under Wandering Plague i meant AOE.
When i said not to mention i meant to put expertise after it
Sry im tired =(
OvaJan 16, 2009 - 2:50 AM (HideShow)
There are so many places where you can swap a point here and there and have virtually the same results. I often change up my spec and pick up wandering plague, or unholy aura, or extra points in impurity, or on occassion even bloody strikes. To address your points though...

1) Corpse explosion would be used with your own ghoul after a gnaw, not on a corpse on the ground. It hits decently hard right now, and it could be good after the patch buff for some quick added burst. NotD would let you get him right back up. It may end up sucking. I'll remove it if so.
2) Wandering plague is bugged right now. It doesn't take resilience into account. It will after the patch. When I don't pick up AMZ (which is only for smaller brackets with certain comps) I get wandering plague. It's a good talent, but it's definitely skippable. Pestilencing it may work on cleave teams, but using that on any team with CC would be a terrible idea. DnD glyph is not worth using after patch either.
3) You're being very short-sited on this one. You keep talking about damage damage damage and nothing of utility. Yes, people move out of desecrate in the open. That's not the only use. What if you're getting pillar kited? Grip the teammate or pet, plague strike to put a desecrate down, and go after the pillar kiter. He'll have to get off of the pillar, or you'll catch up when he walks over it. Likewise, put one down on a dps chasing your healer around. He'll have 12 seconds to use it for pillar kiting of his own while you do something else. These are 2 of MANY ways desecration is useful. It's quite obvious when you fight a DK without desecration, and it's way easier to stick to people on their team if they don't have it. A fire and forget frost trap is a powerful thing.
4) AMZ does have a steep prereq, and it's worth every damn worthless point you have to spend to get to it. This and deathgrip are the main reasons to bring a DK on a 5s team. It rapes not only casters, but DK and ret pally damage for the entire duration. 18k d
OvaJan 16, 2009 - 9:47 AM (HideShow)
Post got cut off! Anyways, 18k damage is not a small amount amount of damage to mitigate. 2 arcane barrages, lol? The enemy needs to do 24,000 damage before AMZ fades. It is a gamebreaking talent in all respects. If you are deep unholy and doing 3s or 5s without AMZ, you need to reconsider your spec. The only place it's really optional is in 2s depending on your comp. I'm not sure why you think VotTW is a better choice... It's a minimal damage and health increase for the price of tons of utility and team support. If I threw 3 extra points into blood, it would be in bloody strikes.
5) Dirge. This is the one point I can agree on to an extent. Dirge is a great talent, but runic power is usually fairly easy to come by, so it's not a big deal to skip these points and stick them in impurity.

Your suggested changes to my suggested spec basically remove the utility talents and take damage enhancing talents instead. This might work for you right now, but it seems pretty face-roll to me, and it relies on nothing more than the fact that this spec in any variation and DKs in general are plain overpowered atm. A bit sad that this works fine in the current meta game, but that's arenas atm.
NalarianJan 16, 2009 - 2:36 PM (HideShow)
I'm curious on how the rotation goes exactly. I feel like I'm doing it right, but then again I feel like I might be missing out on a small part which could help defeat the enemy faster/better.
SholazarJan 16, 2009 - 5:40 PM (HideShow)
Corpse explosion is a waste of a point for arenas...
MedortinJan 17, 2009 - 1:21 AM (HideShow)
question though why not spec into VoTW and 2 into RoR with some modification for the 6 expertise boost at least?
BlightnessJan 18, 2009 - 7:45 AM (HideShow)
to shortyx's comment. It is wise to go full desecration if your running with a healer. desecration=frost slick, makes it hella easy for a healer to pillar kite.
ShortyxJan 19, 2009 - 8:59 PM (HideShow)
Well maybe my comments about descectartion was bias because i play arc mage DK in 2's and 3 dps 3's and 4 dps 5v5 so i don't really realise how usefull AMZ and desc are for healers
DötknightJan 23, 2009 - 5:35 AM (HideShow)
hi guys could u gimme a mind, atm i have 21/0/50 build and i'd like take 3 points from unholy and put it to bloody strike but couldnt manage to find most suitable unholy talents to sacrifice.
OvaJan 23, 2009 - 11:18 AM (HideShow)
I'd probably steal points from reaping if I was going to go 24/0/47.
KÃ*llJan 25, 2009 - 6:59 AM (HideShow)
So, have you had a chance to try this build after the patch ? Is corpse explosion worth it now ?
RegretJan 26, 2009 - 1:41 AM (HideShow)
Blightness I was merely pointing out that your original comment was not helpful, but no need to attack, other than 1 pc off of VoA I've earned every single piece of pvp gear, but thats not why we are here. With the change to AMZ I find it completely worthless now, and am debating where to put points. I've started a new team with a new partner and am trying a variant of this, dropping MoB and AMZ because of the nerfs and going for more DPS (19/0/52). Just in testing it seemed alright, but I'm skeptical of whether this will still be the dominant spec as the season progresses.
OvaJan 26, 2009 - 10:19 AM (HideShow)
No, corpse explosion still sucks lol. I'll make a post to get that changed sometime here soon. I was hoping it would buff the damage that the ghoul explode did, but it did not.

AMZ is definitely much more situational now. It is still incredibly useful for nearly any 5v5 team and many 3v3 teams.
NephiteJan 27, 2009 - 12:58 PM (HideShow)
i see many wasted points plz respec. it your looking for a good AMZ spec then work on your diseases and strikes. no need for CE also impurity is GOOD. as unholy 2h weps is not as important as bladed armor. you need the attack power to help make your DOT spell more dmging. but thats my opinon.
ShortyxFeb 8, 2009 - 11:03 AM (HideShow)
They are changing pre req for AMZ to 3!

Hey guys, i'm fairly new to PvP on my death knight, but PvP is nothing new to me at all, I was just contemplating what spec would be the best for a DK Priest team, my priest can either be disc or shadow, whichever seems to work out the most, i'm also thinking about making a Mage Priest DK team, which specs would work out the best for me? Thanks.

OvaFeb 18, 2009 - 5:53 PM (HideShow)
Hellbendr: That spec looks fine, except try moving the points in outbreak to virulence. You really don't want to pass up that talent.
Greyhero: I use MoB less and less in small brackets because double dps is quite rare outside of mage/rogue, which we seem to do pretty well against without MoB. The overabundance of paladins also hurts this talent because they can dispel it off instantly. After 3.1, something like 20/0/51 will probably be a solid spec.
Undefeated: You pretty much never use Obliterate as a deep unholy spec.

oh and the glyhps for the build are icebound fortitude ( so u can pop it at the beggining with lichborne so u cant be cc'd from healer) glyph of boneshield and glyph of chains of ice, minor are pestilence horn of winter and raise dead the 1 point in morbidity can be moved too i had no place else to stick it maybe 1% dodge?

CamouflageJun 9, 2009 - 1:45 PM (HideShow)
my comments:
wandering plague+descrition vs. melee
unholy dks arent as physically defense orientated. what i find to do against warriors, pally's, rogues and other spec'd dks is to disease them scourge strike and run around a bit, to avoid being hit, using runetap when needed rince, repeat.

summon gargoyle, dirge are both useless i think but pretty damn close to what i spec
