General Information

People have been requesting a strategy guide after getting to 2200 with this comp this season (before I transferred) so I decided to make a guide on some comps that will give you trouble. Lower ranked teams of this comp rely on RNG from Windfury combined with Bloodlust to kill enemies. Verses smarter teams or teams like RMP and double healer you must know how to do quick switches and stopping as much CC you can while getting them CC'd the best you can. No matter what team you're running, even this team requires strategy at the higher ranks.

Strengths:

  • RNG is your strength. Some games you may be losing then a lucky proc and the game can be completely turned around.
  • You have both defensive and offensive dispells.
  • Every player is hard to kill by melee, as everyone's in mail or plate and don't rely on buffs to keep themselves alive. You hard counter a majority of melee trains even though you are one.
  • Decent CC for a melee train. Forcing to people to trinket followed by another CC, such as repentence or fear can be devastating at crucial moments.
  • Typically easy to avoid CC on any player. With Shaman Groundings/Earth Shocks followed with Paladin dispells (and Blessing of Sacrifice to stop sheeps on himself).

Weaknesses:

  • Shaman is incredibly easy to control with Silences and CC. A majority of CC's are avoidable but something like a Counterspell on a spell then the inability to Earth Shock or Grounding an incoming sheep will hurt you.
  • Ret Paladin will go OOM fast. Games have to be short or you won't win.

Tips

Shaman: You MUST know how to twist Grounding and Windfury. While you can stop a majority of CC's with Dispells and Tremor Totem; things like Cyclone must be stopped otherwise someone will be CC'd. Fakecasting things like Counterspell helps A LOT in the long run. Earth Shocking is exceptionally important. Knowing how to line of sight CC is important. Basically just knowing how to heal while avoiding CC, which a good Shaman should be capable of is what is required of the Shaman in this team.

Retribution Paladin: You are going to dispell A LOT. Verses Warlock teams you should be spam dispelling whenever you're not using a Seal, Blessing, Judgement, or Crusader's Strike. The Paladin I played with was incredible and could dispell things almost instantly. Knowing how to lock down targets help A LOT too. Instead of using Repentence or Hammer to catch a target, you should use it while they are casting something. Coordinating this with the Shaman always helps.

Warrior: Everything that is expected out of a Warrior. Being able to catch Druids is a requirement. Some may call this a tunnel vision comp, but in my opinion switches are very key to it, and it all comes down to the Warrior. DO NOT tunnel vision. In short time periods where someone is out of place you can do a quick switch and win the game.

Builds

Paladin

0/20/41 Ret Paladin should be just the typical Retribution spec.

Shaman

Shaman should be 0/9/52 with Improved Ghost Wolf and Guardian Totems. Just the typical spec without Toughness. You MUST have Focused Mind.

Warrior

Should be the 3/5 Flurry spec.

Gear

Paladin

The weapon isn't entirely important (compared to the Warrior). Get whatever you find that looks the coolest in the S4 weapon set and use it.

Shaman

Shamans may use a little more PvE gear, however be forewarned that there will be some teams that focus you and it will be the death of you vs some teams.

Warrior

Being Mace Spec is VERY nice for this comp. It helps keeps Druids in place (surprisingly, Druids CAN get away when you're focusing them as this comp). We were unfortunate and unable to have a Mace specced Warrior. Swords is fine for this comp, but I personally prefer Maces.

Why would the shaman go 9 / 52 ?

Toughness beats Mana tide anytime
DaerasxAug 9, 2008 - 3:46 PM (HideShow)
The shaman is almost never focused making toughness a REAL waste of points which is well needed for other stuff contributing to the comp alot better.

Shaman Ret Warrior's a tough comp to play, for sure. Thanks for the guide (I haven't read it, and it may suck, so if I ever read it and it sucks, I'll tell you, k?).
HavixAug 10, 2008 - 3:58 PM (HideShow)
Why would the Warrior go Flurry and not TM? Just started this comp and got to 1800 in first day. The warrior went Tm and just curious why Flurry is better? cause without TM spell reflects fail, Making RMP even harder. Or am I just stupid?
PomponiusAug 10, 2008 - 4:58 PM (HideShow)
Does this comp need a strategy guide? O lets drop windfury and go hit that warlock over there until he dies. Then again that strat is pretty complicated.
ZoldakAug 10, 2008 - 7:29 PM (HideShow)
@ Havix:There is very few teams that will actually focus the warrior, and even then he shouldn't have to sword and board often. The extra dps is always helpful.

@Pomponius: I explained this on the thread, to get to 2k in the middle of s3 all you needed was just WF and Bloodlust and rely on RNG. And vs some teams even at higher rating, it is just like that. But verses teams like RMP and double healer switches and using CC coordination is completely required.

Got raped by a Mage/enhance shaman/priest team today playing this comp. Got lucky the first game ten just got owned 3 game sin a row after. Any advice against this type of setup?
KoeretAug 12, 2008 - 2:17 AM (HideShow)
Hey you guys have actually helped us alot in strats against PMR and druid priest X
But um. right now were having trouble against rogue druid warlock, Rogue sits on my with curse of tongues, both me and pally are getting DPSd and with a rogue keeping me stunned with COT someone dies. even if rogue doesnt kick me once. SOoo... helps!
GrotheskAug 12, 2008 - 4:46 AM (HideShow)
if the rogue is on you and your paladin and warrior are free, either the lock or the druid will go down before one of your team if you manage to keep tremor and windfury down. The only problem on 3v3 is rogues sticking on one of your teammates and not letting them get near the target. And how can't you land a heal or earth shield on one of your teammates?
KamikazeAug 12, 2008 - 11:08 AM (HideShow)
Is it a problem with a sword warrior? I have this 3v3 combo and we are doing alright, I am sword spec, but it also seems that in a lot of the situation when I chrage/intercept our target the extra swing is way more helpful than the stun.

ZoldakAug 13, 2008 - 6:17 PM (HideShow)
Armory hasn't updated in a few days Freizen. I hit 2200 with Guldain the other day and my 3v3 with shadowplay is sitting in the 2100's. Btw where are your shoulders? http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Hyjal&n=Freizen

Hmm..mage/enh shaman/priest does seem like somewhat of a counter. I don't really know what you could do here other then getting lucky on the priest and surviving the counterspell.

When the rogue goes for you Koeret, the best chance is for you to go for the rogue occasionally to stop chain stuns while having a majority of your damage go towards the lock.
IssorAug 13, 2008 - 7:41 PM (HideShow)
This team pisses me off. As PMR (and me in full merc lulul) we can't beat this team if we're tired. >:(
DrazhAug 14, 2008 - 3:16 PM (HideShow)
Zoldak thanks for the guide, don't know why you are getting flamed so much for trying to help. Anyway's found your strategies interesting and helpful, especialy vs PMR. This comp (like every comp TBH) has a lot more depth than people give it credit for. Once your opponents don't suck you'll find things get harder.

ZephyrrAug 14, 2008 - 5:24 PM (HideShow)
I am quite impressed by your guide Zoldak, a lot of good information and pretty solid strats on most of the common matchups! I have a couple questions though.

First off, does the pallie that you are teaming up with use an particular macros that really help. Right now I have BOP and BoF macro'd for my teammates but was curious if there are any others that might help quite a bit?

The 2nd question is the spec for the shaman. Currently he is 0/20/41 and I can see the benefits from the 0/9/52 spec but he seems to be focused more then anyone on our team, any suggestions on that?

And last but not least, do you have any other strats on other duel healer teams such as druid/paladin or paladin/priest?

Otherwise nice guide, like it a lot, hoping it will help my team push even further up the bracket =D!
ZoldakAug 14, 2008 - 7:18 PM (HideShow)
You'll have to ask him, his name is Webb on Hyjal. Otherwise I don't really know how to help there.

You should be 0/9/52, because if they go for him chances are he won't be able to kite them and it's going to be a short fight anyways. Plus you'll be giving him BoP and Freedom.

I haven't faced too many of those, but if they're with a warrior ect I would suggest going on the squishier of the two healers.
WisdomcubeAug 18, 2008 - 12:47 AM (HideShow)
Stupid comp to RNG based.
RavialAug 18, 2008 - 7:05 AM (HideShow)
you don't really need toughness,I use mana tide myself,it helps pala too,and if you are foucsed, pala can just BoF you
PyrounleashdAug 21, 2008 - 12:17 AM (HideShow)
How do u beat warrior/ warlock/ druid

are paladin says hes getting fear spammed, while they macro-totem kill the tremor totem.

weve tried going on druid and warlock...one way we get fear spammed, the other we get ccd like crazy
KaejiAug 21, 2008 - 5:35 AM (HideShow)
Zoldak how does your team deal with resto druid/resto shammy/warrior we fought them for the first time tonight in BeM, And had a real problem getting on either healer between kiting below and hamstring spams from the warrior it was a real pain in the ass.
SeparationAug 21, 2008 - 3:53 PM (HideShow)
RIP STEPHEN CASSISTA 2000-2008
AnathasAug 22, 2008 - 12:25 AM (HideShow)
in my opinion mage and warlock unpurgable armor buff ruined this team. I ran it with the best shaman and a very good warrior and we couldnt even break 2k because we were unable to zerg locks. Blizzard screwed melee teams with unpurgable fel armor, its rediculous.
ZoldakAug 22, 2008 - 12:35 AM (HideShow)
@Pyro: If the shaman has no one on them there's no excuse for the paladin to be feared. If they're peeling you and you're unable to get on the warlock, go ahead and switch to the warrior if you want to to force them to play defensive. Then go back to the lock or the druid if available.

@Anathas: It has made it harder but it's still very doable. It's about taking advantage of mistakes they make. We RARELY zerged the lock, we usually made switches to the druid once our warrior was free from CC. A lot of it relies on the paladin's timing on his abilities (especially when we make switches).
FlattieAug 26, 2008 - 4:26 PM (HideShow)
For the paladin who asked for macros: Having a dispel macro that will dispel your teammates(one for each) and then retargeting your target helps ALOT in this setup when things gets fast and furios ;)
WislerAug 27, 2008 - 4:13 PM (HideShow)
What rating should i get with this setup ?
i have seen couple 1700 couple 1300 .. But we are like 4/5 Brutal shamman And a 2/5 warrior But paladin dont know in my head xD
AnathasAug 28, 2008 - 10:13 PM (HideShow)
yea its become harder to run for sure... and i cant stand it when all people say is "LOL DUAL MELEE = NO SKILLS" because being able to sneak cleanses, freedoms, bops, all that jazz while stunlocked or fearlocked (pet totem macro ftl...) is NOT as easy as it sounds... especially when all you seem to cleanse is winters chill...
AnathasAug 28, 2008 - 10:15 PM (HideShow)
another thing, Curse of Tounges sucks =(
ArrathnanSep 2, 2008 - 7:28 PM (HideShow)
This guide has helped me alot. We've face alot of tough teams since my battlegroup is toughest if not 2nd toughest in US but us being able to beat those teams sometimes has made us better in the long run. I downloaded decursive and thats been make or break sometime with matches against shadow comp and RMP.
ZephyrrSep 3, 2008 - 5:09 PM (HideShow)
Another question for you zoldak. So far this team make up has been great so far but there was one comp we were having trouble with and was curious what you typically did against this comp. We kept running into a lock/rogue/priest combo and every time we lost, almost had 1 but lost all 3 matches against them. The warrior and myself would train on the priest as usual but the problem was the lock was literally soloing our shaman. Silences, DC, fears (yes even with great totem twisting it still hurt him) The rogue was on both of us keeping us as CC'd as possible but every time the shaman would die or one of us just cause the shaman couldn't keep up heals. We tried going for the lock once but no good :/ Any suggestions? I don't see this comp often but when we did it hurt us >.>
ArrathnanSep 3, 2008 - 7:24 PM (HideShow)
One question. Whats a good strat against nihilium comp? Druid/Priest/Hunter is killing us at times when we face them
ArtofshamanSep 4, 2008 - 12:01 PM (HideShow)
I absolutely hate this comp. It's so bad. No defensive dispels if your paladin is being focussed (most good teams will) means that your shaman is still CCed. Any of the good comps played by competent players destroys this makeup. Lock/druid/rogue, Rogue/mage/priest, Lock/warrior/rogue. To have a shaman solo heal any comp you need a lot of CC muscle to back him up, this offers very little in that regard. HOJ, one fear, repentance means that you're pretty much fodder for CC and yeah. This comp is bad and is owned by pretty much everything, even when the people playing this comp are REALLY good... it is bad.
VerneSep 4, 2008 - 5:15 PM (HideShow)
Ret pala spec written down here sucks imo. I rather prefer 5/11/45 for Divine Strength (10% more str is YAY) , 11 prot for 3% hit, Imp freedom&BoP and BoK. I think going 20 in prot is waste of points for this spec
VerneSep 7, 2008 - 1:06 PM (HideShow)
Well after checking talents for a while yes it is probably worth going for 0/20/41 for PvP because shorter CD on HoJ is godlike for us stoicism helps and more defensive in general and we need it.

I browsed highest rated ret palas and they had this spec and that made me go spec for that. But I am wondering why all they take 3/5 parry instead of 3/3 imp seal of crusader? can someone explain me why to not go for 3% extra crit for me and my warrior on targets which dont need JoJ2 (like mages, priests)?

I really can't understand why to choose 3% parry over 3% crit on enemy. If anyone could explain it would be nice :P
ArrathnanSep 8, 2008 - 10:58 PM (HideShow)
Cause crusader is useless compared to justice.
Justice = druid no run away
Justice = speed enchant useless
Justice = sprinting nowhere
Crusader = 3% crit woot!! Aww crap druid is to far away to hit so 3% crit is useless
VerneSep 10, 2008 - 8:27 AM (HideShow)
But read what i wrote above, some classes just can't run away... well unless you mean boot enchant but it isn't a prob with PoJ talent.

You know, frost mages have no speed increase effects (except ench..), they have no sprint or no such thing. And there are few classes like that, also enemy paladin is such class:)

So i was wondering if it wouldn't be useful in SOME cases... because 3% parry isn't any cool i think :P not more than this
SevenzSep 10, 2008 - 10:46 AM (HideShow)
The reason you spec 0/20/41 isnt for Offense at all you guys are lookin at it wrong its the defensive aspects of the games that make 0/20/41 the ONLY spec for arenas,
for 1 15 second reduced cooldown from improved HoJ + gear bonus = 35 cd on HoJ,
for 2 Improved righteous fury is a 6% damage reduction
and lastly and most important stoicism combined with sancitified seals will make a holy pally OOM tryin to clear seals off his team mates, and make a shammy QQ when he goes to purge your wings.
ArrathnanSep 10, 2008 - 11:10 PM (HideShow)
Parry can mean the difference from a death and living for the extra second for that heal to it. I'd rather have a increased chance of negating a melee attack hitting me than get extra 3% crit. Another thing is smart teams run if they are still mounted at the start if you charge so that 3% crit aint with crap when they are 100% fast than you moving away from the charge. You keep them at your regular speed so they cant run and ruin your charge so your screwed.
TetsumaSep 11, 2008 - 2:51 PM (HideShow)
Any help for Resto druid/BM hunter/Enhancement shaman?
They'll hop on out paladin and force an early bubble, switch to out shaman, then switch back. Within that space of time (unless RNG graces us) we can't bring down a bear form druid. If we do manage to, it'll end up being war/ret with half health vsing bm huntard and enhance shaman.

Any help?
ArrathnanSep 11, 2008 - 9:28 PM (HideShow)
I would just stay on the shaman and make him go shield. I would then make a really hard switch on hunter when bestial wrath is gone and make sure paladin cleanses the viper sting. As long as you last the initial big burst it aint that bad after.

What kind of future for this comp do you guys see once WLK hits and Windfury Totem is no longer RNG but +haste?
SoulduckSep 16, 2008 - 10:46 PM (HideShow)
@ Artofshaman: Thanks for the opinion. Sorry you couldn't play with decent players with it.

@Lesserheal: Little to none, honestly. Haste doesn't help ret paladins or warriors at all.
ErvialSep 18, 2008 - 4:01 AM (HideShow)
Btw about retri pala spec Divine Purpose is useless with recilience and with pala i go oom kinda fast without Sanctifled Judge so would u mind to use talent points on that instead? :P

Would be nice to hear your opinion :>

ArrathnanSep 18, 2008 - 8:15 PM (HideShow)
I wouldnt take sanctified judgement at all. I know mana is a issue and trust me it sucks ass in long matches but if they focus you which good teams will then you should be fine on mana
ArrathnanSep 18, 2008 - 8:17 PM (HideShow)
Soulduck I actually think this combo will be pretty good in wrath. If warrior decides to go fury and has the fury MS and 2h DW then it might be pretty decent with windfury totem. The one thing that will help the team is the CC and the pressure from the warrior and paladin will be key. I think that this combo sort of turns into ret/war/resto druid in some ways.
TazSep 28, 2008 - 5:17 PM (HideShow)
hi zoldak :o
SoulduckOct 5, 2008 - 10:45 PM (HideShow)
No clue Erival.

Ehh maybe Arrathan but it won't be as good compared to the buffs other classes are getting.

Hi Taz.
RonortheanOct 12, 2008 - 1:21 PM (HideShow)
alright i started running this comp yesterday and i just have a few question
1. my ret pally is specced for max damage output, 5/11/45 and i was wondering if the suggested specc of 0/20/41 is neccesary.
2. my warrior has S4 sword, is the burst>the split second stun?
3. I'm (shaman) specced 0/20/41 for pvp, and i found that im the focus when it comes to RPM. Is the toughness specc better for most teams or 0/9/52 neccesary?
TarethNov 8, 2008 - 1:57 PM (HideShow)
got glad with this comp, thanks soulduck
