Shadow Priest/Rogue

VS.

Priest/Warlock

Difficulty: 7/10 if enemy Priest is Undead, 4/10 if not

This is another matchup that is extremely dependent on racials. Undead have a huge advantage here, so if you are not Undead this can be quite painful. My partner and I are both Human, and this matchup makes us cry.

We never really found going for the Priest to be very viable especially being Human, so I'm not going to go over that possibility. It is viable if you are double Undead, but anything else and it's usually a disaster. Your Rogue should start off on the Warlock as usual after Sapping the Priest if possible. Your Priest should DoT up the Warlock, pick off the enemy Priest's Fear Ward regardless of how many dispels and dispel resists take place and then strip the Warlock's buffs. Your Priest should then Fear the opposing Priest when Sap is just about to end, which will trigger either a Will of the Forsaken or a trinket. If the other Priest isn't Undead, cheer because this is an easy matchup. However, if he is Undead, it will be much more painful. The difference between a WotF and no WotF is a 23 second gap which pretty much separates a win from a loss. The bottom line is, we need to get the opposing Priest to trinket while Blind is up. DPS the Warlock hard during the Blind, and try for a Vanish->Sap->Silence->Fear. By this time our Priest should be very weak and nearly OOM, so he should save a bit of mana for a Silence and/or Fear while our Rogue pokes the Warlock down.

Stripping a priest of all his buffs (including Focused Will, Shield, Renew, Focused Casting, etc.) makes him VERY squishy. We had terrible luck when we tried to kill the warlock, but killing a discipline priest is not very difficult at all.

The problem with going for the priest in this matchup is, unless you are both undead, the warlock is open to CC the living hell out of both of you. However depending on the map, positioning, and individual player strengths, going for the priest can work. We just don't do it very often because it's not always reliable.

Even being double Night Elf going against double undead, I've found getting on the priest is always better. My priest usually spam dispels the enemey priest while we fully CC the lock. Usually a priest will be more concerned with healing himself than dispelling a scream from the lock so if you can last through one scream CD to fear the lock twice (WoTF and trinket) you can get a full blind->vanish/sap off and take down the priest. Also, AR/Prep rogues eat through priests, but locks are still annoying.

We've been opening on the warlock, burning him as low as possible, and as soon as PI is thrown up immediately switching to the priest. Usually the pressure on the priest doesnt give him the time to heal his lock, and either my spriest can finish the lock or we'll burn the priest all the way down. It's very easy to kill a priest without PI to save him.
