Shadow Priest/Rogue

VS.

Mage/Rogue

Difficulty: 10/10

This is the counter to Shado Priest/Rogue. If you thought DPriest/Rogue was hard, you will want to headbutt a cockroach after playing a good Mage/Rogue team. Their strategy is simple; CC your Rogue and kill your Priest. There's very little we can do to really put a cork on their burst.

The Mage will either start out invisible or visible (obviously). I prefer Mages that are visible, so we don't get caught in some ridiculous predicament with our Priest Cheap Shotted on one side of the map with a Shatter combo queued and our Rogue on the other side, still stealthed. It's happened before, and it's not pretty. If the Mage is visible, we usually go for him. Our Rogue will Sap the Mage and I'll strip his buffs, with the priority on Frost Armor. The enemy Rogue will open on me at about the same time, and our Priest will Fear him. If he's Undead, he'll WotF and continue his kill on the Priest while your Rogue works on the enemy Mage. It comes down to a race between which caster dies first, and the Mage is a much more formidable target than our Priest. Our Priest needs hop out and heal when he's at around 30-40%, and hopefully the Mage will die soon. He also needs to be very on the ball with preemptive Mass Dispells.

If the Mage is invisible, this matchup becomes even harder. We really don't have much of an idea where they are, so the best we can do is sit next to a pillar and wait for them to open. The Rogue will soon Cheap Shot our Priest and the Mage will have his elemental out behind us casting a Frostbolt into a Shatter combo. It is absolutely crucial that your Rogue interrupts this Shatter combo, because the Priest cannot afford to trinket the Cheap Shot. They will follow this CS with a Kidney Shot, which our Priest will need to trinket. If we survive this opener with decent HP, your Priest needs to start LOSing the Mage while dotting up the enemy Rogue. Your Rogue should Gouge the enemy Mage then go on the enemy Rogue as well. Look for an opportunity to Fear the Mage; he'll be LOS'ed so he'll probably have to get in close, so Fear him when he does. The Mage will need to trinket this, so follow it with a Blind, which he will Iceblock.

During all this, your Rogue should have popped all of his CDs and be tearing the enemy Rogue apart. If your Priest falls below 30-40%, he needs to drop Shadow and start healing. Silence should be used whenever the Mage isn't CC'ed. Dispelling your Rogue of Polymorphs is also crucial. The goal is to spin around a pillar over and over, to screw up the Mage's LOS constantly. This prevents most of his DPS and CC. Keep up Rupture on the Rogue so he can not just Vanish and remain stealthed.

Spriest should always stay as far as possible from mage to avoid beeing insta killed.

Early opening of your rogue on their mage will let you keep a chance to win. A winning sap duel with opposing rogue will help you too.
If opposing rogue get the opening on Spriest, game cannot be win.
You should get early silence and dot on mage while rogue dpsing mage. It will force an early ice block. Rogue should then help you escape opposing rogue with a blind, gouge, stun or whatever can let you take a few meters. Try to survive and dispell every chill effect as soon as possible or you are dead

A bad matchup whatever you do, but I will rate him 8/10

playing atm arround 2100-2200 rating... and rogue/mage it's hard... against allcince.. just rush the mage... fear and than blind the rogue... and it should be easy.
against undeads it's verry hard... still killing the mage it's a better ideea because the rogue will SC,vanish and run when he's arround 10% hp... u'r priest will be dead.. and u'r rogue will be keeped in sheeps. so i find it better to go for mage.

definetely not 10/10 in my eyes. The thing is: You can completely destroy enemy rogue in one stunlock if your rogue opens on him.

Just try to engage a fight somewhere near column so you can los the mage after.
Basic scenario for us was:
1. Spriest saped mage is getting in range and start casting fbolt. Spriest getting cs in same time.
*1. If mage didnt start with blast which most mages dont you can sap him while he is casting. Then just stun rogue. *IF you didnt manage to sap mage, you may want to consider shs+kick his fbolt after you stun rogue.
2. Mage will trinket or ib from sap, rogue wont trinket CS though.
*2. Put 5cp rupture on rogue and proceed into another vanish+cs/garrote then kidney. Mage will be casting smth at this point, clos if it is poly and blind to interrupt him if its fbolt (if priest is still stuned).

Priest will leave stun and should dispell nova / run behind column + put some dot on the rogue. The key is to lose rogue here so he cant shs to you and kidney at once. If enemy rogue wont trinket kidney here -- he is dead btw. Else he should be still pretty low after set of dots and few hemos.

The key of the fight is burning cds and controlling mage as much as you possibly can with shskick/gouge/blind/silence/vanish+cs and still assisting your priest when rogue is on him. Looks like alot of theorycrafting but we actually didnt manage to loose to a single rogue mage yet. Just dont get into the open so you can los mage and it seems to be fine.

I am not on a really high rating but we have faced some MR combos with s3 weapons.
What we do here is i start on the mage but i stay close to a pillar.
When the rogues start on me with cheapshot, my rogue starts on him with cheapshot....
When i am out the stun, i silence the mage and start on the rogues with SW:Pain and VT.
before he is out of the stun i give him MB and SW:D
After those he is on 45% of his HP.
my partner puts a bloodefect on him so we can contineu nuking him after the Shadowcloak and vanish.
We blind and fear the mage but like always Mage gets out of those and sheeps my partner, witch he trinkets followed by Shadowcloak and he contineus on the Rogue.
After that rogue dies..
right after that i go healing and stay healing untill my rogue killed the mage/

You wrote about the rogue: "..fear...If he's Undead, he'll WotF and continue his kill on the Priest..." but you didn't mention the scenario where he isn't UD, you simply concluded that it was a lot game.
If he isn't UD he's royally screwed. If he trinkets the fear he should receive a blind+sap immediately after, disabling him for 20 seconds while his mage is getting nuked. That really isn't an option for him, he'll pretty much have to let it run out, and in the meantime where both of you are free to do whatever you want you should be able to deal some pretty massive damage to the mage.
Thing is, you should be able to prevent the mage from polymorphing any of you meaning you got no problem saving trinket for blind, it's all you need it for. On the other hand a rogue/mage who isn't UD can't do anything to counter an instant fear.

i was playing with a shadowpriest till 2048 rating while we start droping cause of frost mages and rogues...we only win 2 games of 8, we win only if i was on mage faster than the other rogue.
