General Information

Make people trinket. Always try to open with the sap to force an early trinket. You want this so that you can blind later on. Heavy cc on one target while killing the other is the way to do it. Communication is also very important with this combo. You must communicate with each other to know when people trinket, and where people are positioned.

Builds

Rogue

I think that the rogue should be AR/Prep with mace spec. Maces offer more control and still have very good dps. It is very important to have the 2 evasions, sprints, and vanishes with this combo. Espicially against druid teams, it will come in handy.

Warlock

SL/SL is the way to do it. You dont need points in mana feed with this set up, so dont put them in. This set up is about the lock having survivability, but still a good amount of damage via dots and things of the sort.

Gear

Rogue

I think it is important for the rogue to have the battlemasters trinket that heals them. It can be a game winner. I also think they should have a good amount of ap, but have it balanced out. Don't stack all ap and no survivability, or vice versa.

Warlock

Dont stack pure stamina, anything over 12.5k is enough. I go for spell dmg/stamina gems, and some resilence ones. I think as a warlock, you also need the battle master trinket. Since you dont have heals other than your drains, that and healthstones can be a life saver. Boar's speed on the boots is a must for you and the rogue, unless the rogue has the run speed meta. For the warlock, I like MSD for the meta gem, those focus fears can really help you win games.

Been playing this combo for a while now and I can't remember a match where I (the rogue) was ever focused before the warlock was down. As such, having the battlemasters trinket is totally unnecessary.
IcycakeFeb 21, 2008 - 1:42 AM (HideShow)
no more arena ignore so you never know
LarwindFeb 28, 2008 - 2:47 AM (HideShow)
So I've been looking at the rogues specs now and they are all shadowstep/assassination. Is AR/prep best spec for this combo or the "new rogue spec" shadowstep/assass?
MalcolmMar 3, 2008 - 3:24 PM (HideShow)
This guide looks like it may have been written before the AR/prep spec was obliterated in 2.3.2.
ZuinMar 5, 2008 - 1:11 AM (HideShow)

this was written the week after it got owned, and it still worked fine. But yeah Ar/prep is outdated, id Recomend being Shs now.

How is there no mirror team strat? And what about the team that kills us the most: rogue-rogue?

mirror strat: kill lock as fast as u can

"Been playing this combo for a while now and I can't remember a match where I (the rogue) was ever focused before the warlock was down. As such, having the battlemasters trinket is totally unnecessary."

No, not really. The reason you'd focus a warlock rather than a rogue is to stop his dps; a melee class attacking a warlock will interrupt casting and therefore lower his dps output, it'll also stop him from being able to CC via fears. However, consider lock/disc priest vs. lock/rogue. The lock/disc priest team should have the felhunter on the opposing warlock, have some DoTs on him and curse of tongues. They should however be aiming to kill the rogue first as the warlock will be harder to kill and attacking him will not lower his dps.
AerissMar 19, 2008 - 3:03 AM (HideShow)
Actually Warlock/Priest tries to kill the warlock while dotting the rogue because rogues are impossible to kill in between CloS/vanish and Cheat death.
But killing a warlock isnt that hard when the priest is dispelling all the dots and his fear ward.
ElfDroodMar 30, 2008 - 11:05 AM (HideShow)
Could we have strategy against drood/rogue please?
TwistdApr 3, 2008 - 1:33 AM (HideShow)
Strat for drood/rogue...combo seems to be the one and only combo that we're havin trouble with.
ZuinApr 3, 2008 - 12:48 PM (HideShow)
Druid/rogue. Try to sap the rogue, if you do, spend time looking for the druid and then open on him. If not, just open on him. The second the druid comes out, switch to him, and cc on rogue. Make the rogue trinket a fear or a deathcoil, and then blind him.

MSD meta?

SmontageApr 12, 2008 - 2:38 PM (HideShow)
Imo since the focus meta gem was massively nerfed (personally the 300 or so haste really doesnt appear to affect my already low fear cast time, though it can be nice for dotting things up now it changes the GCD), and a proc at a crucial moment isnt gonna get that damn rogue off you, I'd recommend the 18stam and 5% stun resist gem for this combo. Requiring less assistance from your partner vs rogues is a big plus, and almost enough to make me want to spec felguard :P Resisting a 5point KS could be the difference between winning and losing ;) Not to mention, stamina ftw...
KatorzoApr 17, 2008 - 3:10 PM (HideShow)
Does anybody have a strategy against ret-pally/icemage ? this team has lot more burst than we have and my lock dies too fast.

Why AR/Prep?
MentosMay 14, 2008 - 5:59 PM (HideShow)
At the moment Me and MY mate (rogue) are having trouble with pally warrior teams coz pvp warrior are getting very good at hamstringing, quickly gets back on me and the pally gets los all teh time, even since im almost full s3 they still hit me like a truck with the s3 mace (90% of warrior on my server use mace) do u have any idea's on how we can beat this combo?? thanks any help would be awsome
SnakemysticMay 15, 2008 - 10:55 PM (HideShow)
Vs. pally/war I would try to sap pally very important. At this point pray to god u can eat off the blessing of sacrifice buff off the warrior or ur gonna have a hard time fighting. Burn warrior cc pally. Pally bubbles try to cc warrior with rogue stuns while u bandage drain life whatnot. Been having a lot of warriors getting lucky stuns and pally's blessing of sacrifice not being eaten off.
GnomomukMay 19, 2008 - 1:29 PM (HideShow)
so AR/Prep instead of shadowstep?
SnakemysticMay 19, 2008 - 8:33 PM (HideShow)
No this guide was made before AR/Prep nerf. Shadowstep all the way.
IwlnMay 26, 2008 - 9:37 AM (HideShow)
What would be the best thing to do against double BM Hunter?
SnakemysticMay 27, 2008 - 10:18 PM (HideShow)
LOS and dot dot dot run around. Rogue don't get caught in a stun. Let dots tick. If possible try to line of sight at least one of the hunters. 2 of them will destroy you. Eventually their cooldowns will be gone. They'll probably wingclip ice trap to slow u down. ALso tell ur lock to pull out VW at the start to mitigate dmg.

isent any strats agains rogue rogue vs this combo realy hard counter with this setup help me out pls
BodiletoJun 5, 2008 - 3:09 AM (HideShow)
I am thinking of getting a ShS rogue for 2v2s, I was think FG/SB would be best spect. Most burst dam, with 2.5sec shadowbolts and SB for me is at least 2k dam, and the FG does max dam of all minions, and charge is great. Demo is def the best survival spec.
My plan would be fear the dps, make him trink out, then sap. gank healer and keep it stunned with cheap shot, garrot-silience, fear, dealth coil (if CD is up) and have the FG run back to you and then charge the healr every time the CD is up.
Stuff like Mana-Feed is necesary and max resil (I have 500 without battlemaster trink, i have the 34resil trink that can heal 1k hp)-going to get battlemaster though.
Also gems should be resil/stam till resil is max or 450+. And i would think 3 sets of Felweave (2 dreadweave) would be best because you will want as many crits as possible. Note- FG spec includes the demonic tatics and devastation=10%+ crit; i am going for at least 30% crit and with max resil I will hardly be critted against.
And of course be on Vent becuase lock needs to know when to start fearing, I predict that we should keep the healr Stuned/Feared and have him out in 30 sec. If its 2dps, then stun one and fear other makes it easy. If the match gets out of hand the rogue and lock should keep on healr while lock fears other, also mana-drain is sooo helpful (except i find it useless againts good resto druids). and the reduce healing and speed posions would be best.

wow thats long, wat yall think?
BodiletoJun 5, 2008 - 3:09 AM (HideShow)
**just in case ya didnt know SB is shadowburn, not shadowbolt
BodiletoJun 5, 2008 - 3:17 AM (HideShow)
unless i can master this spec, it will probably be useless when the team is above 1850, then i would go SLSL or hopefully be able to LoS and nuke (with a high crit)
also if you need the void or felhunter pop them after sacfricing the FG.
also later in fight i love sacfricing FG so i get the buff, eventually regain mana while doing good dam and can pop a succubus to seduce--> this will change the game when its going on for 10mins+, then you will have about 15sec to reset and kill the lowest HP of the 2, while other is seduced
ClarkinJun 6, 2008 - 5:48 PM (HideShow)
you need spell lock for this setup imo
EyemUrXtcJun 16, 2008 - 3:21 PM (HideShow)
I've played my first week with the Rogue/Lock combo and we went 8-2.. which was very cool. I've read quite a few of the strats on here and they helped us a lot. Our combo is kinda backwards though since my Rogue JUST hit 70 and is in all blues...lol... So he is doing pure CC on both targets and relying on my to do almost all the dmg... So we are assuming once he gets his S2 set on 6/24 we will be able to burn people down much faster. All non-caster double combos turn out to be very easy to kill for us... Rogue/rogue doesn't seem to give us a problem yet because my rogue friend is very good with getting the first hit(sap one jump the other) and if I get jumped first he is very good at blinding my attacker so that I can fear him after he trinkets. And yes i know that my teams are super low rating but we do skirms against teams that at 1800 rating + and still win(sometimes and I armory them to see rating)... and keep in mind that my rogue partner is still in blues.

Anyways... The group we have a big problem with is the Dis Priest/Frost Mage... It just doesn't seem like we can dmg them well enough. Rogue has a hard time CCing Mage because of blink and if he jumps on priest I'll get sheeped and he's dead(only 9k hp with 100resil)... We are trying to figure out what we should do, or try to do... I know our gear is an issue but with the CC we should be able to figure out how to take them down like the teams we did this week(out geared on every match). Anyways... in advance.
ThelyonJun 18, 2008 - 3:08 AM (HideShow)
MENTOS in response to warrior/pally teams I recommend sapping the pally. First off the key to beating this team is split dps in a sense. After sapping pally have your rogue stunlock the warrior this will buy you time to fear the pally and dot the warrior with amplify curse. When the pally fear is up try to reapply it if unsuccessful dot and curse on tongues the pally. Drain life the pally making sure you interupt all heals. With wound poison stacked and the warrior taking good dmg the pally will be forced to bubble having only time to fully heal one target. Have your rogue blind the pally AFTER he bubbles reapplying CoT and you should have little trouble taking down the warrior.
SaberethilJun 28, 2008 - 1:15 AM (HideShow)
@ Thelyon: there is this thing called Blessing of Sacrifice that fucks up your sap. A good pally right after seeing a lock with no buffs will think it's a lock rogue (unless it's a good lock druid faking buffs). Also good warriors will know the perfect times to pop defensive stance, he'll do it when he's in risk of dying and pally is CC'd. Definetely the CC strat will barely work. What I basically do is just split DPS, rogue on pally and me on Warrior, just force the warrior to line of sight the pally. And then just improvise, depending on when he bubbles, who he heals when bubbled, what warrior does when his pally is in risk, what warrior does when you force him to line of sight, etc.

My brother and I are relatively new to 70, and are jumping into s4 with both feet. I am still learning to use the full capability of rogues, so I am pretty much the weak link. We are able to figure out most set ups pretty easy. Rogue/Rogue is easy, and anything with a druid is cake. Our demise seems to be the BM Hunter. Beastial Wrath is just a pain. Even with 12k life my brother seems to get burned fast. No stun, blind, fear, or poison works. LoS can be difficult with BM/BM. Any suggestions on some BM combo counters??
WormenJun 29, 2008 - 9:01 AM (HideShow)
Oh and any pointers a good rogue can give me would be excellent. PM or Post. Thank you very much!
WormenJun 29, 2008 - 4:42 PM (HideShow)
Oh I did forget to say it really the pet under bestial wrath that give my brother trouble. Any strat for dealing with them.
ShattersJun 30, 2008 - 2:30 PM (HideShow)
Put SL and CoW on the pet and drag it behind a pillar, start draining life, make sure hunter didn't lolSneezeDispell your felarmor. By the time the hunter can try to get you in LoS TBW and BeastWrath should be gone, fear fear fear.
WormenJul 4, 2008 - 5:10 AM (HideShow)
Ty Shatters, that strat is working beautifully! When we see a BM hunter now we know that is pretty much a win now. We seem to be getting quite unlucky now drawing every War/Pally, and Rogue/Rogue team down the pipe. It gets frustrating when we break 1600 then drop strait down 1500 in a bad run of luck. There are a couple ideas in this list, but can someone try to nail down some counters to these.
KìraJul 7, 2008 - 11:18 PM (HideShow)
Just wondering would Shs rogue and Destro lock work well at all because i really want to stay destro, also what would be a good destro build to work with a Shs rogue
NakazaJul 8, 2008 - 2:41 PM (HideShow)
i would also like some tips about destrolock+rogue
AgethaJul 9, 2008 - 7:15 AM (HideShow)
Ok, so i've been playing sl/sl lock + shs rogue for maybe 4 months now. We got up to 1900 in S3 but now were stuck at 1700~. The rogue is almost all s3 with abit of s4 and s2. I am abit of s4 and s2 as well. 495 res and 13.6k unbuff. We usually sap fearx3 coil blind vanish sap. But ever since s4 that doesnt work anymore. We are fighting alot (almost all) of rogue teams and i just cant get the fear off. I mean, how is it possible to get a fear off, when a rogue is hitting you (unless he sucks) sure you can coil him, but they just trinket or cos and im screwed again. What do i do?!!?
MürlocJul 10, 2008 - 5:31 AM (HideShow)
im wondering if i should get the new haste rating guardian gear instead of spell dmg stuff ie: ring and neck. whats better? discuss.
ShatosenJul 10, 2008 - 7:09 PM (HideShow)
Another option:
Rolled Rogue/Destro lock to 1900 in the course of a week or 2 just at the end of season 3. I (the rogue) had S1 gear and the Destro lock was sporting S2/S3. Considering the limited time played and even more limited gear, I know the team could go higher.

Play the combo like mage / rogue, w/o Ice Block. Make no mistake, if a warrior, rogue, or other melee DPS class has an opportunity to hop on your lock, its gg. I cannot stress enough the importance of crippling poison / deadly throw for this match. Control is paramount, especially considering how frail this team is. Fortunately, Sap / Blind / Death Coil / Fear do not share DR (unlike Cyclone / Blind, for example). Open up with sap on one target (this will be your CC target for the rest of the game unless things go very poorly). CC target should then be chain feared by the lock, with Blind assist to mitigate any trinkets / WotF / etc. burned. During this time, both the lock and the rogue should be on the other (DPS) target. The rogue should control this target as much as possible (CS -> Hemo + Hemo -> 5 pt KS _> Vanish and do it again), allowing the Destro lock to pile on the damage without interrupts. For most of our games, the DPS target would die before the CC target would have an opportunity to get back into the game through DR.

The DPS target can be just about any class because of the mix of both melee and magic damage, but I do not suggest Orcs because stunning the DPS target is so crucial. The choice of the CC target is far more important as you must choose a class with limited counters to CC or a limited ability to get back into the battle once the CC has worn off.

So, the burning question: why Destro lock over SL/SL lock or mage? We prefer Destro lock because- 1: no one ever expects a Destro lock, Shadowfury adds another stun to a combo that stuns quite a bit. 2: SL/SL locks put out less burst damage, a key element in this team. 3: Fear is much more effective than sheep in that it also removes an enemy from the battle as it
BonskiJul 16, 2008 - 5:33 AM (HideShow)
RE: "I mean, how is it possible to get a fear off, when a rogue is hitting you (unless he sucks) sure you can coil him, but they just trinket or cos and im screwed again. What do i do?!!?"

What usually works for me is throwing immolate when the rogue gets close. If your lucky and he kicks it (many do) your much closer to getting a successful fear cast. if the rogue is smart enough to wait for the fear, try a fake cast (start casting but interrupt shortly after, then cast again after the kick) This is a bit harder though, and requires practice and a bit of luck. Hope this helps ^^

AmbivalenceJul 22, 2008 - 9:10 AM (HideShow)
About this combo vs. rogue/rogue. I don't know how, but me and my teammate have really only lost to this setup maybe 1/5 of the time we face it (and we've faced it pretty often) Not that I have room to speak being only 1700 but its game over if you get sapped. You NEED to get a sap on one of their rogues and light one of them up as much as possible as you need to down one of the rogues before they down your lock. Get a rupture on the rogue youre dpsing asap as almost all rogues will freak out and try to blow CD's to get away and rupture will bring him right back out. Save trinket for 1st blind of course wait out the 4 second one and get back to dps. I shouldnt hafta say it, but i will anyway STAY BEHIND THE ROGUE. These are rly the only tips I have from my lower brackets of experience. Im guessing the only real reason we've been winning is really shitty rogues though.
XeniumAug 3, 2008 - 7:47 AM (HideShow)
i dont know if this has been mentioned before, but me and my buddies have really not enjoyed playing sl/sl, dmg is just too low, and its boring as can be. We all have decided a pvp destro build would be equally as good, if played well. I currently have a rogue/lock matchup 2v2, i have seen this spec and combo reach +2000s. I was wondering if anyone could suggest stratagies for 20/0/40 rogue, and 7/7/45 lock. or send me email
DalvinAug 5, 2008 - 4:04 PM (HideShow)
easy combo to play if u ask me
DarkbearAug 11, 2008 - 12:59 AM (HideShow)
@Xenium

Alot of people dont like SL/SL including my old partner but if you want to make this team work you need to sacrafice the "ZOMGHUGEDMGONHISFACE!!" and go to a low dmg high survivability spec(SL/SL)... in arenas if i ever seen a lock w/o SL/SL he automatically becomes out focus target and 99% of the time will get worked and have his dps shut down. I have seen UA been used before but Destruction just has to low survivability and if you are focused as destruction your DPS is gunna be laughable compared to a SL/SL lock being focused
