General Information

Priest/Rogue has the ability to compete in any Battlegroup, regardless of the possible abundance of Druid/Warrior or any other setup that you believe out comps Priest/Rogue. Obviously some combos will have advantages over you. However, with coordination, determination to become better, practice and all those other encouraging sentiments you hear on sports movies (it is true though)there is no reason for you to not compete for Gladiator running this makeup. If you lose to a certain combo all the time, ask why and how, try new strategies, spec differently so that CAN beat that setup. Do whatever you can to try to beat them, don't yell or scream and don't get frustrated as it will probably cause you to lose even more. If you only rely on my strategies and you don't try to improve based around your play style then you will probably not enjoy much success because this strategy is merely a guideline on how to beat certain teams, chances are your opponents will read this guide and counter the strats I have laid out. So keep your mind open and you will do well.

Specs

In my opinion, a Priest and a Rogue can be whatever spec they want (assuming Priest has Pain Suppression), if you feel that if you had Improved Inner Fire and Improved Fortitude you would beat Druid/Warrior better, then get it. I however think that other talents are more viable, considering Improved Fortitude is only around 300 HP and it can be dispelled (the same goes for with Imp Inner Fire). I have also tried Mind Flay spec (43/5/13). I lose 0.5 seconds on Greater Heal which is big and Spell Warding with this spec. The spec is up to you, if you lose to Mage\Rogue a lot, then spec how you feel will get the greatest advantage.

This principal of specializing how you feel works best applies to the Rogues as well. I cannot speak on behalf of Rogues since I admit I don't have any experience on one, however I do know that I have succeeded with Rogues who were specced Combat\Mutilate\Shadowstep, so spec how you think gives you the best advantage and matches your play style.

General Tips

Just a few things to keep in mind, always be aggressive on the opposing healer with Mana Burns and Fears (avoid the other Priest's Fears by having your Rogue Gouge or stun him so you can freely run up and Fear), Make good use of the Power Infusion change to get Mana Burns off faster if you manage to get a Fear off on whoever has Mana. Also, do not get frustrated if you lose to a certain setup a lot, just improve yourselves and you will hopefully manage to beat them.

Use Poisons to your advantage, if it is a double DPS team there is no point in using Wounding, switch off to Mind Numbing. It's good to have 2 Off Hands so you can just change your weapon instead of wasting time switching poisons in a match, this will give you a huge advantage. Also, be sure to take advantage of Blind\Vanish\Sap, this can be a huge thing as your Priest will probably have Fear up so if the guy isn't dead by the time the Sap is over you can always Fear or Mind Control.

Quality of the strat

Using these exact strategies, my Gnome Rogue partner and myself managed to achieve a 2404 rating with a 93-27 record at the end of Season 2. This season I have not played with the same partner from Season 2 and have not really tried serious Priest\Rogue 2v2. I am from US-Arthas in the Ruin Battlegroup. If you have any questions or comments or something you'd like to discuss, stop by, I'm always willing to help, unless I'm doing arena.

Gear

Priest

Priests should have probably at least 300 resilience, 100 MP5, and 1300+ healing, to start.

Rogue

Rogues should have 300 Resilience and weapons that are better then something you can find in the auction house (season 1 at least). Obviously, the better your gear is the greater chance you have at doing well.

My 2v2 is having a nightmare of a time against Hunter/Pally. Do you have any suggestions for this setup?
MicksterApr 4, 2008 - 12:49 PM (HideShow)
Hunter pally is relatively the same strategy as Priest pally, you have to oom the hunter out quickly then work on draining the paladin. Dispel freedom from the hunter so he can’t kite the rogue through traps as easily, be aggressive on the pally and always use fear. You should be able to oom the hunter quick because you don’t have to worry about being feared or mana burned by a priest and cyclone or bear charged or rooted by a druid. When you get the hunter oom work on mana burning the paladin, it would be good to try to kill the pet, try to lure the hunter next to the pally and get a good fear on both of them. If you think you can burst the pet down go for it, pull the pet from los of the pally. If you kill the pet its pretty much game over, just keep the hunter oom so he cant res the pet, dispel traps and drink. You should be at 40% mana by the time the hunter is 0 hopefully, if you are below that quantity you should try to kill the pet while keeping the hunter in combat and fearing the pally. If you need to, use fear on the hunter to mana burn him.
WoodblockApr 5, 2008 - 3:13 AM (HideShow)
hunter anything with poison dispel will never lose to disc priest rogue if they are any good. hunters can drain priests so easily and rogues are just so kiteable. Also, any hunter who doesnt suck ass wont get mana burned. with poison dispells and freedom (or abolish and CC with a druid) hunter+poison dispells shouldnt ever lose.

PenetrationApr 5, 2008 - 3:54 PM (HideShow)

MicksterApr 5, 2008 - 4:14 PM (HideShow)
Mana burn the mage to nothing opt, stick on him also and have your priest be aggresive on the shaman, once the mage is oom, stick on him. Have your priest dispel th mage of his ice shield so you don't get slowed also. Once the mage is oom he will try to evocate (stun\fear\whatever to stop him) then just continuously beat on him, eventualy while the shaman is spam healing he will go oom (fear+mana burn the shaman also). You should never be in any danger by an oom mage so have your priest drink if he needs to.

MicksterApr 18, 2008 - 7:18 PM (HideShow)
Ok sorry for the delay of a shaman warlock strategy but here we go:

Always be on the warlock, thier should be no reason at all why your rogue isn't on the warlock 90% of the game (besides a deathcoil and a fear that you somehow can't dispel), the lock should have 5 wounding on him and a mind numbing. The priest has to totem hump and fear the shaman whenever tremor is down. Try to time a fear when CoT is about to go down than ask your rogue to stun the warlock and proceed to fear + mana burn. If he trinkets then you can blind\vanish sap\fear if you see a good time to kill the warlock. If he doesn't trinket spam mana burn, try to make the lock blow CS before you fear, if not, juke the first one as he will probably silence you and you won't be locked.

Once the shaman is oom he can still heal pretty good, so get ready to do a fear\vanish sap\blind and help your rogue burst down the lock. Try to keep the shaman at low mana as best as you can and always get rid of totems, keep POM bouncing and renew and try not to blow all your mana.
MicksterApr 18, 2008 - 7:21 PM (HideShow)
And for the above hunter mage; if they go for your rogue and sheep you, you have to avoid sheep with LOS, if it's a BM hunter than you need to play a little conservative, have your rogue blind the hunter and when he trinkets your priest should fear him. (people ALWAYS trinket blind, so to get rid of the hunter for a little bit blind him FIRST then fear him right after he trinkets before he pops BM)
Rogue should be on the mage and you should spam dispel him and the mage so he can stay on him. Vanish sap the hunter if possible also, you want to CC one of the two classes as best as possible.

Although that is a wierd setup you probably won't face many of those.
MicksterApr 18, 2008 - 7:22 PM (HideShow)
Ok and for shaman frost mage you just mana burn the shit out of the frost mage and you win untill their shaman can't out heal the rogues damage on the mage anymore. Just spam mana burn on the mage than the shaman and don't let him evocate.
PothoffApr 26, 2008 - 6:14 AM (HideShow)
TY MICKSTER!!! :D
SkurkanApr 29, 2008 - 8:48 PM (HideShow)
frost mage should be very doable especially with a shaman as resto. avoid shatter comboes. pillar kite the mage when the elemental is up. and mana burn
XaphaniaApr 30, 2008 - 6:51 AM (HideShow)
Can we get a strat for Rogue/Resto Sham?
MicksterMay 2, 2008 - 12:19 AM (HideShow)
If you (priest) are able to keep yourself alive from the rogue, go for the shaman and try to sneak in some mana burns while the rogue is feared, if the rogue is UD have your rogue help him to peel the other rogue from you till his wotf\trinket is down, then switch to the shaman and keep mana burning, once he's oom you can either try to kill him, or kill the rogue while keeping the shaman in combat (water shield gives a shaman mana when you hit him so just use a dispel on him or something)

Annoying fight but drink whenever you can and never let the other teams rogue restealth, always dot him when your fear has like 1 second left and keep him in combat.
AgitatorMay 5, 2008 - 8:24 PM (HideShow)
Now that I've all but retired my shaman and am now playing a rogue, priests take note that after the 2nd or 3rd batch of totems the shaman may start dropping stoneclaw to stun you, so just keep an eye out.

A new comp that we keep seeing is PoM Pyro Mage/Disc. Priest, and Frost Mage/Shadow Priest. Can you give me any advice? We've got the pyro/disc decently, but the frost/shadow is hurting us, causing us to lose 4 games to them.
MicksterJun 7, 2008 - 9:55 AM (HideShow)
tell me why you lost, need more info before I can provide a good strat since I have only played that setup as a priest\lock and can't really provide thorough detail. I will just give you what I think you should do.

try to get a sap on the mage if not possible start on the shadowpriest, as soon as the shadowpriest is opened on, dispel him and mindblast him and begin mana burning. At the start of the fight it is critical to not get sheeped so if the mage goes to sheep you go out of sight, if you see him trying to sheep his rogue spam dispel. Now the more the mage tries to sheep, the more you are shitting on the spriest. The rogue should use his cloak when he sees an incoming frostbolt\shatter, this will put another 5 seconds of free dps, put renew\mending\shield while he has cloak and mindblast again. Right before cloak ends, vanish and run away to get another opener. Your priest should keep them both in combat by dotting them, try to wait as long as you can before you open again so your cloak will be up again, if you can't wait any longer, you can even try having the spriest go behind a pillar and sap him.

Your goal is to make them blow silences on your mana burn, keep the shadowpriest in the open for the priest to freely mana burn but in a place where he can shadow word death out of sheeps, use your trinket wisely.

Just remember to not get caught in a chain of sheep\silence\silence, if you get your holy spell locked up the rogue must do everything in his power to run away, that means shadowstepping back, sprinting whatever, because a mage silence followed by a priest silence - 10 seconds of you not healing.

Just make sure to keep the rogue floating above 80%, try to bait a counterspell by running out and casting a flash heal and canceling it, if you manage to do this once you will win the game since the CD on silence is pretty much the amount of time it takes to kill a spriest. Do not worry about fearing, there is no point since you are on the shadowpriest and if you run out to fear the mage he can trinket
MicksterJun 7, 2008 - 9:56 AM (HideShow)
whoa dam thats a big wall of text for a retarded combo lol
NeatoJun 9, 2008 - 8:46 PM (HideShow)
What's a good strat for Priest/Warrior, usually we have the Rogue sit on the Warrior and then the warrior sits on me and he destroys me way faster than the rogue can kill him :(
MicksterJun 12, 2008 - 8:19 PM (HideShow)
uh Priest\Warrior is can be pretty tough, you want your rogue on the warrior at the start, if the warrior goes on the rogue, pop your shit to minimize dps, have your priest spam dispel his shield\renew, when the priest comes out to heal the warrior, Shadow step to the priest and lock him down, have your priest PI mana burn while you are on the priest stopping him from healing the warrior. If warrior goes on your priest, have your priest bring the warrior (who should be decently low) and shadow word pain\mindblast\shadow word death, at this point both targets are being focused and you can finish one off.

Now if you are unable to do that, keep staying on the warrior and try to mana burn the priest, dispel the rogue if he gets feared and just try to outlast, although it's better if you can get free mana burns on the priest while your rogue is beating on him. If the warrior trinkets a kidney, blind him SS to priest and get as many as free mana burns as possible.
NeatoJun 22, 2008 - 1:38 AM (HideShow)
We just faced a MarkHunter/HolyPally team and we just couldn't beat em :(. Can you give me a strat for that, or is it pretty much like Priest/Hunter?
MicksterJun 30, 2008 - 5:26 PM (HideShow)
Copying my strat that is mentioned above, Hunter pally is relatively the same strategy as Priest pally, you have to oom the hunter out quickly then work on draining the paladin. You should be at 40% mana by the time the hunter is 0 hopefully, if you are below that quantity you should try to kill the pet while keeping the hunter in combat and fearing the pally. If you need to, use fear on the hunter to mana burn him.

Shaman Lock gets countered very hard by Priest Rogue though tbh.

Thanks for the good guide Mixster. It has been very useful. However, my priest friend and I are getting canned by healer/warrior teams besides holly pally ones. While it might be my gear(eew 1520 ap), we get to about 1650 and run into tons of well geared teams with warriors. Can you give tips on these teams? Especially with mana burning, as we can't seem to drain anyone's mana at all.

Yes. I know its the lol 1600's but we're new at it and there is a surprising amount of full s3 warriors at that rating. And yes we even do fear-sap-blind-sap-mind control combos. My highest experience is a 1750 5v5 with ele shaman.

Tactics for Druid/Enh Shaman plox!
MixsterJul 13, 2008 - 9:58 AM (HideShow)
@Crowing

Just give me a lil more info on how you lose the game vs a warrior healer team, shammy\warrior and druid\warrior are kinda gear intensive, just let me know on how exactly you're losing (whos dying first, do you run out of mana before you die, who do they focus, etc) just general info and I can help out a lil more.

For Druid\Enh shaman. I haven't really played it, in fact, I don't think I ever have. I can imagine that they just tunnel vision you (priest) while rogue tries to peeel but eventually you go oom. If thats the case then start on the shaman and have him run to your priest and kidney him when he's behind a pillar, if he's being lame and not taking the bait then just sit on him and have your priest mana burn next to the pillar untill he comes.

If you manage to accomplish oomin the shaman, start fearing\blinding the shaman and go for the druid, make the druid shapeshift alot and try to oom him, off target shaman once in a while to keep pressure on both of them.

Eventually you'll land a kill on either of them.

More info on why you lost and I can help a little bit better since I have no experience playing that setup and the strat is one I just made up and you may be able to come back and say "Well X did Y so we couldn't do what you said"
CrowingJul 13, 2008 - 6:46 PM (HideShow)
Our usual loss to druid/warrior happens with my priest running out of mana. The fights last to long and he just can't get the druid mana burned because of bear form and los issues coupled with hamstring. When he gets low on mana, they can either kill me quick or just switch to my priest so he it's hard to drink. He usually dies. On some of the full s3 teams we play, I can't get the warrior killed even when we execute our full c.c. chain correctly.

On a side note, we had only been playing for like 2 days when I wrote that first message. We are getting better at this team as we beat a few in a row the other day. One strat we've been doing, if the druid isn't super geared, is having me get on the druid by spamming crip poison. This usually causes him to run away and heal/drink. I then switch to the warrior who is at like 50% from reflective shield and dots. I don't think this will work for long, because a smart druid can keep his warrior up and get away.
NatalyaJul 17, 2008 - 6:10 AM (HideShow)
My partner and I just ran into shaman/BM hunter. This was a tough combo for us to deal with. We tried to hammer the shammy while I mana burned him but the hunter was all over me (priest). Does anyone have any experience or advice about how to deal with this combo? My next thought was just to hump the hunter's leg to limit his DPS on me while the rogue stayed on the shaman and the BM unfearable buff wore off.
CurajaJul 21, 2008 - 1:21 AM (HideShow)
I find this fight relatively easy, probably a 90% win ratio for us. If the rogue is on me, i will just run around pillars and heal myself. The warrior will down the priest long before the rogue kills me. We were 1956 at best last season when i was using my s1 mace still and we found that most of these teams would target the warrior, try to force pally trinket on fear and then blind to finish warrior. That being said, you must stay away from the priest at all times. The priest will be pillar humping making it difficult to heal with the exception of holy shock. When the rogue kidneys the warrior, use holy light and get him back up. Other then that, just spam cleanse so that your warrior can get max dps with a full rage bar on the priest the whole time and i usually have bubble and trinket up with 40% mana at end of the fight. 4/10

I have done many Priest/Rogue combos, but I must say I found peace and mind with Priest/Hunter. You'll own Druid combos with it, it's basically a counter-combo for all Druid combos save for many Druid/Shaman.

Hey Mix, I was wondering if you could post a strategy for Ret Pally/Rogue? Thanks in advance.
BallistJul 30, 2008 - 11:42 PM (HideShow)
Hey everyone. I have been playing with rogue 2v2 for a week now. So far we have done ok but when we are trying to reach 1800 we get some major problems... so far we have been killing most of the healer+dps teams with nuke power and with proper cc. But when we are fighting at 1750 we start to get much warrior/druid or warrior/paladin setups. we have usually began the fight with all the dmg to one of them (usually on drood or against pally/war to warrior) that way we get one of them straight away to low health and they become very defensive. that way we have won most of the matches against those setups but when our nuke power ends in the beginning we start to go more and more defensive and soon we realise that one of us is dead. so should we try go little slower in the beginning? so far our builds has been 20/0/41 rogue and mine 34/5/22. just wondering if our specs too weak in the long games if we can't get them down in the beginning?
BallistJul 31, 2008 - 11:13 PM (HideShow)
forget that mail. :) I changed to 42/19/0 and we went straight to 1800 without any problems. *cheers*

Expect the video within 2-3 weeks and maybe more if I go on vacation (starting to fraps now, hopefully comp can hold up) Check back now and again as i'll post it.

Very good guide.. was doing great, but ran in to a few teams (just started with rogue partner this week 1600's pretty good considering new partner, just came back from another game quit lol)

Thanks for the guide Mixster. There were a few teams, after reading strat ideas, that I have beaten since, mainly hunter teams. Seems almost any team with a druid or warlock is my weakness, except druid/warrior. That is pretty much the easiest matchup, if priest isn't scared to solo warrior. My rogue will just get the druid on other end and I will solo fight warrior. I'm sure that strat won't work in higher brackets, but for now, using 1v1 skills has done my 2's great.. Not to mention I have impressed my brand new partner to no end :P
MixsterAug 9, 2008 - 2:01 PM (HideShow)
Yeah this setup has gotten a lot harder for a few things...

Every other team has a druid on it (especially higher up brackets, mainly druid\rogue\lock\warrior)
Mages\locks got buffed
Druid\locks aren't as easy because warlock takes 20% more heals
TofastforyouAug 9, 2008 - 6:51 PM (HideShow)
This setup is really easy if you communicate really well and time your CD`s..
This is how we do it:
Open on warrior till druid pops up(Us all ur bleeds).. At this moment the druid will pop up.. Now it usually go like this: I blind druid.. He trinkets.. Than my priest fears druid.. In this 8 seconds we full bust dps on warrior.. Warrior should now have around 20% health.. When the fear ends the druid use NS.. Thats the key to win.
Keep this fight on while im full DPS on warrior.. after 90 seconds my blind is off CD.. i wait till the warrior has about 60/70% health. This is the most diffucult part. I blind the druid and full nuke on warrior together with my priest. After blind my priest throws a fear to the druid. Now just burst the most you can. Use vanish>shs>garrote and DPS trinket. If u managed to kill the warrior in this 20 seconds of cc, gg. If not, u lose =] Just keep comunicating and time ur CD`s

Is spell haste worth stacking at all? I have found that I generally spam Flash hel in arena as the faster casts tend to be more effective than the longer GH?

I just dinged 70 on my priest and I was wondering what order should I buff myself with my buffs. I don't really know what's most important.

Any good team will counter it almost.

Hey, whats the best for the rouge to have if we aint on high ratning yey, to have he's Pvp gears on, witch is like 4/5 merci and one brutal or he's t6? I mean with he's t6 he got so freeking good dps, but dies very easy in the pve gears..

My preist and I tend to do failry well in our 2v2 matches and are heading into the 1600's and I was wondering if you would be able to give me an idea of team combo's we would be up against. I was also wondering what do you think is a better build for a rogue at this rating? (Mutilate or a hemmo ShS build.)
MixsterSep 28, 2008 - 12:47 AM (HideShow)
mutilate is better now a days imo, use wounding for OH vs warrior\healer teams and see howthat goes spamming shiv.

Disc/rogue can still do well, but it is not as strong as it was in season 3. Warlock and mage teams will give you more trouble with your priest not being able to dispel fel armor and ice armor. The abundance of druid/rogue, druid/war and shaman/war will be a damper on your rating but you should do well against most other comps.
