Frost Mage/Destruction Warlock

VS.

Retribution Paladin/Shaman

Added 4/1/2009

This comp is difficult for Warlock/Mage for a variety of reasons. As such it is one of the few comps where you'll want to kill the healer instead of the dps. The reasons for this is that if you want to kill the Paladin over the Shamans, you'll have to deal with spam Cleanses, Tremor Totems and Divine Shield. Not pretty, when all else fails zerg the Shaman.

Alright, so before you engage you'll want to have worked out your lock out rotation with your partner. We typically use the Deep Freeze->Death Coil->Shadowfury->Blanket Silence->Spam Seduce/Fear rotation. Thing's to be aware of is Hand of Freedom on the Deep Freeze and incoming Ret damage.

To stop some of the damage incoming on you, a useful thing to do as the Warlock is to destroy the Tremor Totem (often placed near the Shaman as you'll want to engage them fast) and Shadowfury->Howl of Terror both the Shaman and the Paladin. If you find that you can't start your lock out chain on the Shaman due to constant line of sighting at the start, one decent fear directional RNG can stir him into the open often times.

Keep your pressure on that Shaman, toss some sort of control on the Paladin, and land the kill. In many cases you won't get that kill, but don't let that deter you. Whoever the Paladin is training will have to play pretty defensively at that point.

Hey bud, Facing this comp we had much more success with killing the ret...for 2 reasons (though it wont work always)

They often get overexcited and pop wings hence he cant bubble. All it takes is kill tremor+seduce shaman meanwhile fearing the pally, your pressure at this point is soo high that the Pally must focus on surviving and generally doesnt have the spare globals to cleanse his shaman. We have found this strat fairly effective but also tiresome as you stated.

However going for the ret makes for a much safer strat, This is one of the few comps that i find you can pick either or and kill either or depending on positioning/trinkets/cooldowns.

Hmm, I should probably add switch to the Ret if he pops wings, otherwise focus down the Shaman. Thanks for the tip.

Yah good shamans if they see you coming for them, just turtle and pillar hump so it can make for a very difficult time trying to kill him.

As a mage priest we focus the ret by sheeping shaman then shattering the ret while in a CS silence if a healer and a dps can put out enough damage to make a ret pally bubble I'd assume you can do the same as double DPS. Maybe do a seduce on ret and then sheep shaman do shatter on ret then silence and the shaman will be forced to trinket perhaps. Just my 2 cents.

When i started playin this comp back in s3, we'd stand in the edges of a stage... about 20 yards away from each other, and i'd put my succy about 20 yards to the side (usually closer to the shammy)

the pally would always try to roll on me, but my mage (pom-pom) would just start casting a pyroblast and since there wasnt alot the pally could do about that he would have to just take the hits... the shammy would always try to follow the pally, and get seduced (thanks to totem stomping macros)

now, in wtlk... i would recommend sheeping the pally, and seducing the shammy, when the pally (shammy if we are lucky enough for it to come in the open) sees a soul fire and a shatter coming, its an immediate bubble...

then just reset re-roll.

theres not alot the pally/shammy can do about u sitting in the middle of the stage, so its pretty safe. we did it to prevent the pally from LOSing if he somehow managed to survive the "shadowfury explosion"

id go into more detail, but this isnt my how-to.. (--well done torment--)

Anything that may help others reading is welcome, if you feel you have helpful hints to add by all means add them.

So what should i do if the shaman is enh? Played this team a couple of times earlier today and we got destroyed every time because the wolves mess up cast time even while we have some form of cc on both players.
