Frost Mage/Destruction Warlock

VS.

Hunter/Paladin

Updated 4/1/2009

This match-up is quite the nuisance for your team, as it is very much a kill before being killed match. The way we tackle this team is to crowd control the Paladin as usual, via Seduce and Polymorph, while dishing out as much damage as possible into the Hunter.

The key thing here that puts a bit of strategy into this match is keeping the Hunter locked up, stopping/preventing Deterrence for as long as possible. As the Warlock, I tend to save my Death Coil for when the Hunter is hovering around 40-50% health. More often then not he has trinketed the Deep Freeze which your Mage has already used, so the Death Coil will last its full duration. You'll need to kill him here, if not, he probably has popped Deterrence, which doesn't mean you have lost by any means, but it definitely makes it more of a hassle.

The Hunter cannot attack you during Deterrence, so you won't be taking much incoming damage during this time, however, the Paladin is likely bubbled and spamming heals into him, so you can see why it's favorable to get the kill by locking him out of his actions. You can time a fear cast on the Hunter to land the second Deterrence wares off to stop some incoming damage as well.

A very helpful thing to do against this comp is to Demonic Circle out of LoS of the Hunter during the Paladin's Divine Shield, while keeping your Mage on the Hunter. If he gets close, Shadowfury/Fear him off of you. He should have enough debuffs on him to protect the fear from being dispelled. In most cases the portal will be enough. Once the Divine Shield is off the Paladin, start your CC again and finish the Hunter off.

General tips here are to watch out for Hand of Sacrifice, as always with Paladin healers and to make sure the Hunter doesn't drop one of you to 50% before the fight even begins. The initial way you engage is pretty huge.

Mage PoV:
Start out with a Deep Freeze on the Hunter to force a trinket, then just pour all of the DPS that you can into the Hunter. If the Hunter survives long enough to get off Deterrence, use that time to recover if you are the target. Just remember to Spellsteal the Hunters buffs to get Freedom and Sacrifice.

Just a quick note that I'll put in when it's edited but it can be very beneficial to your team if the Warlock ports out of LoS when the Paladin bubbles, and remains out of LoS for the duration. The Mage can still put out pressure - don't port if you think you can get a kill and also don't port if your not the kill target.

Or instead of the hunter trinketing deep freeze like a baddy, the paladin could just give him freedom...

^ This. You can put freedom on a target while being CCed.

The trinket doesn't play much of a factor, and that was an oversight haha. If anything you'll want it for a fear or death coil. The Hunter will have a lot of fodder buffs on him, so it's pretty easy to fear him during the Paladin bubble and portal away.

This comp has not given me and my mage much partner if they focus on me. However they can tear my mage a pretty big asshat sometimes with luck (we at least have portal out of LoS to save us). Your opener is key, generally the mage goes in first and i follow right behind (about 1 second after)

This comp we find is much easier then hunter+shaman however. As hunter+shaman can be very gay if the shaman knows how to bug a pet with totems+z axis. and purge spam can give them more offensive pressure+lust so they kill you faster.

Again this comp isnt too bad, the only thing that really screw us over are hunters who get lucky with GG RNG TNTs/Entraps/Crits and basically instantly rip off like 6k hp from either of us.

If they do this we can still win but the smart ones what they do is, as soon as they get lucky with that RNG they play defensive and DONT let us ever reset.

I'm just wondering, very new to this comp, is there ever a time where the warlock would not be using his or her succubus?
