General Information

Hey guys.I have been playing this comp for quite long and i would like to share what i have learned so far and maybe help fellow players that enjoy this comp.Sorry if my English is bad, it's not my first language you see .As a note all written here are from a warlock's point of view but I give also some druid tips. I don't claim to be the super pro player,i aim to give to the average player some food for thought and hopefully see more players with that comp because its in a steady decline since Wotlk launched.
I will update it when things change.

Anyways,let's start!

Strengths: Warlock-Druid greatest asset is the amazing synergy between those two classes.
Fear and glyphed shadowflame can offer great peels when the druid is attacked and also Roots and Cyclone will give the breathing room the Warlock
needs to survive melee, his greatest weakness.

Moreover,Fear/Cyclone/Silence can offer enough crowd control to land kills in many situations. You can also play the outlast game like the old sl/sl days.

Weakness:Lock is vulnerable to melee these days and the pets lack the survivability to make them reliable. In some cases they die from unhealable damage
very fast which makes killing pets a viable tactic against us.A Warlock without a pet loses 20-25% mitigation and key abilities
like dispel and silence. The recent nerf to fear combined with damage nerfs led to a new weakness which is the inability to finish someone off and low
single target damage.

Tips and playstyle:

The situation: Right now the comp feels kinda bad because most of the popular comps are Warrior/healer, Rogue/healer(priest mainly) or Retri/healer which are
counters. So prepare for a lot frustration, losing sometimes from players worse tha you.I hope buffs will come and make the comp strong again.

Voice communication is essential because the comp relies a lot in Crowd Control(CC) coordination to be successful.
Also make sure to announce things to your partner like Innervate or when you are out of cd's(such as trinket, Barkskin, Demonic Teleport etc) to switch to
defensive play for a while. Moreover do your best to know where is the right time to go for the kill so the Druid will go offensive. This is achieved by
correctly tracking enemy defensive cool downs. For example if you fail to kill someone 2-3 times you will surely fall behind in mana and lose.

As a warlock you should try to improve your kiting abilities, your fake casting, your damage and try to spend every moment using something, every global cooldown
ideally should be spent on something. Moreover Teleport is your best friend, try to make the best use of it.Dont let it be in the other side of the map!

As a druid your job is to keep your partner and his pet alive, try to find the balance between offensive and defensive playstyle and one of the most
important things is to read situations beforehand.Pre-hotting is a very big strength of druids.Last but not least don't forget to recover your mana whenever
possible.Innervating when you have zero mana is bad against dispelers.

About pets. If your pet dies constantly(especially against shaman Ret where is hard to summon new)you can summon a phase shifted imp with soul link. That way they cant attack your pet and you still have the mitigation.Dont forget though to health funnel frequently cause your druid cant heal it either>.After 3.1.2 the voidwalker got a nice change with sacrifice and it might be useful against some teams. In theory it could be good against druid warrior for example or some double dps that focus your felhunter.Have to test it first though.

Note:Some strategies, maybe will not work against top players because we may miss a very good team in our battlegroup.

Builds

Druid

28/0/43

My Druid uses 28/0/43 Hybrid and very rarely 18/0/53 Resto specc.

There are actually two reasons for using the hybrid specc according to my druid.
  • Dreamstate/Lunar guidance which offer significant more mana regen/spellpower.
  • A lot of damage(Insect swarm,Moonfire, fast Wraths) which help the comp to land kills easier and add pressure to enemy healers

Glyphs: Barkskin / Swiftmend / Insect swarm

Barkskin saves games when enemy team switches to the Druid with fear immunities. Swiftmend is a must and lastly Insect swarm glyph adds 30% dmg making it ticking 800 + dmg every 2 sec assuming the druid has close to 2k spell power.

If you are wondering about Lifebloom glyph my Druid told me that he prefers to have them bloom earlier as they heal for a massive amount and return the mana faster.

Warlock

54/17/0

I use the standard 54/17/0 Affliction spec. You can see some variations around in some talents but they don't make a noticeable difference in my opinion.

Key talents:
Unstable affliction - you can cover your fears and roots with great protection
Instant Howl of Terror - Great for defense and offense
Fel domination with Master Summoner - necessary with our fragile pets
Haunt - Our damage boost

Glyphs:
Soul link / Howl of Terror / Shadowflame (These glyphs offer peeling and defense.)
The shadowflame glyph is debatable(i find it very useful against Warriors which are a pain) so you can replace it with Corruption glyph for more instant Shadowbolts

Gear

Druid

PvP gear is my Druid's only option because he hates pve,so I don't know if there are some items that are better for slots from their pvp counterparts. He plays in full pvp gear: spirit belt/boots/wrist,for neck/belt mp5 or hit(depends on whether you have Balance of Power talent).
He does not use spell penetration which kinda sucks against druid teams but he says its not worth to gem for it, I can dispel MOTW or put up CoE anyway.

Most of his gems are for defense to reach 800+ resilience, but if you feel comfortable that you don't die you can add spellpower and regen.

Warlock

PvP items all the way.You will need at least 800 Resilience to not get gibbed in small time windows. Aim for 6% hit(don't forget you have 3% from talents) 109-129 penetration and gem mainly for spellpower. You have two main options from off pieces: Crit or Spirit. I suggest to take both if you have the time and patience. To clear things Spirit will give you a LOT more spellpower if you play with felarmor and ofc more mana from life tap.If you use Demon armor though spirit becomes kinda useless.

Also if you play destro too in some other bracket i suggest to take the crit set first. There are also haste off pieces(neck/back) which are also a good choice if you are hit capped.

You really should put the NS+cyclone macro as it is much more effective against any interrupting or -healing class, or just to cyclone the healer before he throws the heal to 20%hp target.
ДалетMay 25, 2009 - 6:41 PM (HideShow)
Also moonfire totem killing is really awful, 667 mana for a totem is a nice way to go oom in the first minute.
Anyways, thanks for a nice guide!
BodiletoMay 26, 2009 - 1:45 AM (HideShow)
I think this spec does well if the players are good and used to it (they have played it in seasons before). now i think even a boomkin/destro team could beat this if they cycled CCs correctly
DarkdragondrMay 26, 2009 - 6:26 AM (HideShow)
nice strategy but can you make one for pally-lock?
SmekMay 26, 2009 - 9:52 AM (HideShow)
forgott about all the DK teams? druid/dk etc
DohomeressMay 26, 2009 - 9:52 AM (HideShow)
Are all afflictionlock/resto games long? 10minutes ++?
OzborneMay 26, 2009 - 10:48 AM (HideShow)
At Smek.I consider the dk/healer teams to be easy to win if you are equally skilled with them.Lack of ms and handful of crowd control+mana drain if you cant kill them give you a fair advantage. All you need to do is to keep felhunter alive(not so hard) and dispel stangulate and Hungering cold.If i have many requests i ll update the guide though.

At Dohomeress. Some games take long yes, especially if the oponents play defensive. But 10 min is long;p.If you play correctly it should be over sooner.
SaidiwouldntMay 27, 2009 - 1:43 AM (HideShow)
I actually have NS+X macro from all ccs... including Hibernate, Yeah sure, it may seem a waste but catching a shammy trying to run in GW or pulling an opposing druid out of stealth with it to force a trinket if my partner wakes up and gets on the ball. One I use against rogues to try getting away includes a trinket pop and then NS+Cyclone then get away post haste, if he trinkets I'm normally bopped/healed up by the time he's back on me. Though I feel the need for it because my gear is quite subpar.
AimadoxMay 27, 2009 - 6:18 AM (HideShow)
Hi Ozborne nice guide ! hope to kick ur arse more in arena and gj on s5 glad as druid lock :)
SpicymilkMay 27, 2009 - 11:10 AM (HideShow)
yes guide is prety good, was hoping for more out of the priest rogue strat since we all know ho much a pain in the ass that can be.
HnrMay 27, 2009 - 3:48 PM (HideShow)
how about feralDruid/discPriest? ^^
XbeastMay 27, 2009 - 11:32 PM (HideShow)
have you guys ever tried cycloning the guy with low hp (if its dps) if dr prevents you from ccing the healer?
because me and my partner have been thinking about trying that out.
NefushaMay 28, 2009 - 6:33 AM (HideShow)
Is there any full strat for resto druid/rogue? kinda new to teh site and i cant find one? any help or post a thread i could use?
AimadoxMay 29, 2009 - 4:59 PM (HideShow)
Xbeast its a good idea to do that ^ .. give it a try and it wont let u down
PhailishMay 30, 2009 - 10:01 AM (HideShow)
Please put up tactic if possible against dk + shaman teams and feral + healer teams(mostly shaman)
MetatronMay 30, 2009 - 10:15 AM (HideShow)
Retard bullshit to heal a pet which is going to die everytime in under 3 seconds if there is only one to focus
StunningMay 31, 2009 - 2:35 PM (HideShow)
The warlock dots, and like, makes pet macros while the druid hots, and like, runs around as a tree
TeslaaJun 2, 2009 - 2:15 AM (HideShow)
I like putting talent points into improved thorns in case a rogue hops on me. They have a fast attack speed so they take a lot of thorn dmg and if you throw a moonfire or insect swarm while they are on you all the dmg adds up fast and in some cases i have had rogues kill themselfs from hitting me.
WufooJun 4, 2009 - 7:29 PM (HideShow)
i know this is kind of obvious but def. grab improved barkskin. it does wonders to help us out during rogue stuns. i always try to throw up remove poison with my prehots when i know it's coming, it is a huge help.
DesercratiorJun 5, 2009 - 7:45 PM (HideShow)
How do you deal with Prot Pala/DK or Prot Pala/Warr that know how to play? The protadin never goes oom, like 20k holy lights, and has a LOT of utility/CC, whilst his partner just spams dmg like no tommorrow.
DoggerisJun 6, 2009 - 3:49 PM (HideShow)
destro warlock/boomkin is a decent combo i was able to hit 1850 with it now going for 2k
OzborneJun 6, 2009 - 5:10 PM (HideShow)
I am not active this period due to exams,so i cant update the guide with new comps.

Some answers:

@hnr:disc/feral is a pain because of the new innervate and the fact that you cant really keep felhunter alive.Best idea is to try to kill the feral with a full fear on priest and some cyclone rotations after, depending on positioning. The druid must help dps if you want to score the kill.

@Nefusha:Druid/rogue is rare at my bg but the few we faced it was easy.We play like priest/rogue but its much easier to kill the rogue. The crowd control on rogue is limitless without dispel, use that in your advantage(root, fear, cyclone rotations).

@Phailish:I have faced dk/shaman only in s5 which was a disaster as you can imagine.Sorry but not even 1 game in season6.I imagine try to kill dk.The one not focused should try to cc and pressure the shaman all the time and ofc totem stomping macro.

@Desecratior:Prot pala/warrior-->no felhunter sadly means not enough pressure so its a very hard fight.Try to kill warrior is the only option.
Prot pala/dk--->a fear/silence/cyclones/bash rotation on pala is enough to kill the dk when his AMS is down.Maybe you can try to kill the pala too if he is careless with positioning.A dk alone shouldn't put enough pressure to put you in defensive excpet maybe when he uses gargoyle
OzborneJun 6, 2009 - 5:13 PM (HideShow)
Btw the new barkskin talent lets the druid play more aggresively, which may help the comp do better.Sadly you must sacrifice some regen to get there though and the hit talents if you specced for it.
MetatronJun 6, 2009 - 7:20 PM (HideShow)
The hardest and retardest game is against Frostmage/RetPaladin. Playing the whole time defensesiv and dont use their burst and if you lost attention for one moment after 30 minutes, they will crush the hell out of you.

http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/8324/wowscrnshot060609234918.jpg

Maybe someone get a good answer for such a team?
ZaxanJun 7, 2009 - 2:02 PM (HideShow)
Metatron, I honestly do not see how that Comp could last 30 mins against Lock/Druid. Granite that is a rough combo, but the main thing is ass Affliction you have consistent pressure. You need to dot everything that you can target fully and pressure the paladin more than the mage, but paying attention to the mage still. Have your druid cyclone the mage while you lock the paladin down forcing bubble. Pressure the mage while bubble is up, once its down, rinse and repeat.

The pally is the only person who can dispell the dots, and if youve got a full rotation on both, he has to pay attention on WHAT hes dispelling and putting out his part in dps. If you put enough pressure, hes going to end up playing more of a holy paladin than anything else.
FeoccoJun 9, 2009 - 9:12 AM (HideShow)
If your afflic keep dots up on all, break the pallies bubble, while pallies bubble, get the mage to iceblock. From there u should be set, thats how i beat these teams. Granted I'm destro.
AlariyaJun 14, 2009 - 7:40 AM (HideShow)
Play defensively, Manaleech.
... ?
Win.
ElliphasJun 20, 2009 - 2:11 PM (HideShow)
What to do against disc/feral?
The feral just stays on the pet and does a hell of dmg. Eventually the pet goes down twice or I run oom.
I can't really think of a strat against this team because sleep is easily dispelled and during berserk he gains fear immunity :(
BersêrkerJun 22, 2009 - 4:35 AM (HideShow)
yo Ozborne wanna play ze pokemons with meh mate :<
nice work you did here great lock.
RalakJun 22, 2009 - 2:10 PM (HideShow)
Do you guys see many priest/hunter teams? In my druid/lock team we just hit 1850 rating and most of our recent losses have been against priest/hunter in the ruins of lordaeron. I notice there isn't a strat for this comp here, but it seems they always win the mana race even if I avoid most of the mana burns. Against a good team they never give us enough time to burst down the pet before calling it back to the healer (some even call it back the instant it's out of LOS of the healer).

Am I correct in assuming the fight will require us to kill the pet so I can drink more effectively?
StrokedJun 23, 2009 - 3:00 PM (HideShow)
Doesnt work, warriors just kills lock pet fast and if lock is on druid he will bear form and run away like chicken.
PrefixlolJun 24, 2009 - 4:47 AM (HideShow)
@Elliphas
Use an imp and keep your face to the druid as much as possible (but avoid eye contact!)
Usually you can set up a CC rotation on the priest while killing the druid, try to get the druid out of LOS of the priest, roots + UA etc.

@Ralak
If your lock is keeping dots up on all 3 targets and LOSing as much as possible, you should be able to keep above the priest's mana. Also, if you drag the pet out of LOS of the priest, it should be easy to kill it with your lock before it can get back, use bash and roots for keeping it from going back.
SavvaspJun 24, 2009 - 12:45 PM (HideShow)
Never knew i need spell penetration O.o How can i get 129 tho ? just gems ??
MavickJun 25, 2009 - 3:59 PM (HideShow)
no, pvp offhand and wand have much of spellpen, so you only have to take one 20spellpen gem
FeoccoJun 28, 2009 - 1:34 PM (HideShow)
If you cant get offhand, cloak enchant +35 spell pen as well.
DemonícsoulJun 30, 2009 - 1:35 AM (HideShow)
vs dk healer try kill dk after ams. start with cyclone dk and full dot his pet cause your druid will have to drink alot. send pet on healer and pull it back for heal. if his healer is pala its usually easy to swap to him and kill him while dk is cycloned. use fel armor and go back demon armor when gargoyle is up. cs gargoyle and dot it. priest dk is extremely hard but druid/pala is a fair chance
ShnoodJun 30, 2009 - 5:11 AM (HideShow)
Tonight I had a destro lock/ shammy team that was farming me. I have no idea how to take them out. the destro lock was destroying every pet I summoned which kept me from being able to keep totems down and shaman was just spamming grounding totem. Any suggestions?
DemonícsoulJun 30, 2009 - 6:51 AM (HideShow)
doubt you can do much vs them shnood. its a pet fight but they got the upper hand cause your pressure on them is low due to nether prot on lock. tremor/grounding also rapes you hard. have ur druid smash tremor and try gib his pet with ihot on them if u can catch them into a good position which will be hard
BetrugerJul 2, 2009 - 10:19 PM (HideShow)
Keep an eye on the lock and start health funnel as he is casting chaosbolt so it hits for 30% less. Otherwise the pet will get oneshot. If he cant one shot it then it wont die as long as you are not feeding him backlashes.
ShnoodJul 6, 2009 - 12:43 PM (HideShow)
Thanks betruger I had totaly forgotten about backlashes. I was puting my pet on the lock after i killed his pet to try to help prevent a long summon. Didn't even think i was giving him free incinerates. That should help quite a bit.
GlupoJul 13, 2009 - 7:58 PM (HideShow)
To start with a short quote : "I hope buffs will come and make the comp strong again.
Is this a joke? This combo if played right is strong enough.. with the absurd survivability from the druid and his mana regen, and fear still being in my opinion shit OP as its one of the only cc's at wich you lose your char for such a long time while you get full dmg.. ( from own experience the fear hardly breaks before the end of the additional time )

Another prove why this comp isnt that hard as some wanna claim.. team nr2 containing Pheo and Omy... well Pheo is a very skilled druid .. but played from like s2 to the start of s6 as feral.. and Omy is just a big ass failure :) a retard and a nerdrager who thinks he's good but actually gets carried hard by his team mates.. ( Mehz the druid in all pre wotlk seasons and now as we can see Pheo)

Tho i still wanna thank you for the fine guide :)
looking forward to more matchups
PerketteJul 14, 2009 - 11:15 AM (HideShow)
Im a feral druid but i was board that the servers were down so i started reading now im ganna go to resto. i just dont know the resi LW setfor resto dru healing anyone know what 1 that is?
MagnusgallusJul 14, 2009 - 11:59 AM (HideShow)
@ Perkette If I understand what your asking the resilience resto LW set is the overcast set.
Stamina 450
Intellect 300
Spirit 299
Armor 3028
Resilience 300
Spell power 527

Total of 84 Heavy Borean Leather and 8 Eternal Water to make the whole set. Hope this is what you were looking for.
HitoJul 15, 2009 - 7:41 AM (HideShow)
@Glupo - "with the absurd survivability from the druid and his mana regen," im dead in one stun by a retpally. my warlocks dies within 2min from a ok skilled mswarr. absurd op combo.. not. 400mp5 in full pvp gear. 14k mana... healing spells costs from 500-700 mana.... shapeshifting 300ish.. is that still absurd? all other healing classes got atleast 3-4k more mana then druids. some pallys even have 25kish mana. gg

MagemxJul 15, 2009 - 10:13 PM (HideShow)
i run the comp myself and i find that destro is also a viable if not more viable spec for fighting war druid and dk druid as the seduction allows u to reset drink to full and i find seduction a bit more threatening to druids who leave tree. also shadowfury and deathcoil make it hard for the war or dk to interrupt the channel. alot of times u can get a druid into a fear while in caster after a banish followed by a seduction while the dk is faaaar away and its an easy nuke and even a cyclone on the dps targ into a soul fire shadowburn if chaos bolts down plus starfire is 10k damage usually thats enough to finish anyone off.
DemonícsoulJul 17, 2009 - 7:21 AM (HideShow)
" fear still being in my opinion shit OP as its one of the only cc's at wich you lose your char for such a long time while you get full dmg.. ( from own experience the fear hardly breaks before the end of the additional time )"

glupo, do you even play this game? pls think what you type
MagemxJul 23, 2009 - 5:10 AM (HideShow)
not only does fear break around 3 secs into damage maybe less but its a 20 yrd range as destro and 24 as afflic while being chain slowed as locks usually are the target it makes it a very easily avoidable cc in 2s fora healer
NurokJul 24, 2009 - 12:33 AM (HideShow)
hate this comp :D
BoheruenJul 24, 2009 - 12:41 AM (HideShow)
can someone give me a strat on how to beat a rogue/disc priest team... i just got my butt handed to me by that team...
DemonícsoulJul 24, 2009 - 8:52 AM (HideShow)
kill rogue after clos with overlaping cc or outlast. see priest rogue section for more info on that
MagemxJul 26, 2009 - 6:20 PM (HideShow)
u can have the rogue do next to no damage inbetween cloaks by porting forcing a cloak cyclone after while poisons are removed the CoE kite his balls off.

as destro u seduce fear priest pref seduce cus then u can fear rogue, dot into a chaos bolt shadofury conflag that will force a cloak then rinse and repeat and hes dead.
DeezzAug 8, 2009 - 5:56 AM (HideShow)
glad to see people are still playing druid warlock its the best
KynarieAug 21, 2009 - 2:04 PM (HideShow)
why dont they delete old guides like this that has no reason at all to be here. it gives nothing at the current state of arena, nothing.
CutcutAug 22, 2009 - 2:32 PM (HideShow)
This comp is such fun as destro <3
AlphamortSep 4, 2009 - 12:15 AM (HideShow)
bad for lock to be destro for lock/druid?
KmapSep 10, 2009 - 6:22 AM (HideShow)
I find it interesting that the Druid on the #1 Druid / Lock team opts to use the more defensive Gift of the Earthmother / Wild Growth spec. I find the more aggressive Insect Swarm spec to be not only more useful in securing kills, but also much more fun.
SpookyGhostSep 17, 2009 - 2:46 AM (HideShow)
having tried Destro with a resto druid, sometimes you can score incredibly quick kills, but usually you'll be chasing some healer around a pillar. It's pretty frustrating. At least with affliction they're taking damage even when out of LoS
PrimortulSep 30, 2009 - 1:22 PM (HideShow)
LMAO @ Glupo...a rogue complaining about a lock??? That has to be the funniest thing ever thats like a mage complaining about a warrior..you cant QQ about a class if you are their counter it just makes you look dumb.
LegendbeastOct 16, 2009 - 7:44 PM (HideShow)
@ ozborne
do u use Treeform in the fight?
ty.
YakarueNov 4, 2009 - 1:32 PM (HideShow)
Question, now that we can choose between haste OPs and Crit OPs, what are people going with? This is coming from an affliction lock, I realize destro may need something different. I currently have crit and I have been doing some tests. For both UA and corr, out of a 100 ticks, about an avg of 19 of them are ticks, and the added extra damage on a resilled target is roughly 500 or less per tick. This comes out to about 9k extra damage; however, this was over multiple mutiple games so per game it really isn't that much. Just curious about your thoughts!
YakarueNov 4, 2009 - 1:33 PM (HideShow)
19 are crits*
