Warlords of Draenor Game Responsiveness

Warlords of Draenor will be changing how game responsiveness works. The difference should be roughly 1-10ms. Do you think you'll be able to notice the difference?

Official Blizzard Quote:

I know this is a very open question, but is there anything "under the hood" with the responsiveness changes that could impact theorycrafting?
I was wondering when this'd get brought up. I've hinted about this in the past in a couple interviews... Yes, there was a very significant underlying change here, that may have implications for theorycrafting (though minor).

I don't want to get too deep into the under-the-hood workings of WoW servers, but here's a super short version. Any action that one unit takes on another different unit used to be processed in batches every 400ms. Some very attentive people may have noticed that healing yourself would give you the health instantly (minus client/server latency), whereas healing another unit would incur a delay of between 0ms and 400ms (again, on top of client/server latency). Same with damaging, applying auras, interrupting, knocking back, etc.

That delay can feel bad just due to the somewhat laggy responsiveness feeling, but also because the state of things can change during that time. For example: Holly the Holy Priest is healing Punky the Brewmaster. Punky spikes low, and Holly hits Guardian Spirit in a panic. The server verifies that Holly is able to cast it, and that Punky is alive (great!). The cast goes off, Guardian Spirit goes on cooldown, and a request is placed for the Guardian Spirit aura (that prevents dying) to be placed on Punky. That request will be filled next time the 400ms timer loops, which happens to be 320ms from now. 250ms later, the boss lands another hit on on Punky. Punky dies. Sadface. Another 70ms goes by, and the Guardian Spirit aura request pops up, and goes "Hey guys, I'm here!... Aww... damn, I missed the party. Sadface."

We no longer batch them up like that. We just do it as fast as we can, which usually amounts to between 1ms and 10ms later. It took a considerable amount of work to get it working that way, but we're very pleased with the results so far; the game feels noticeably more responsive.

I can't guarantee that you'll never ever again run into cases where Guardian Spirit went on cooldown and the tank still died... but it'll be literally 40x rarer than before, and the whole game will feel more responsive too.

wrong, that's already the final delay on top of the latency.
the difference would be 1-390ms, which is huge.

on topic:
i really welcome this change.
hopefully this fixes not only spell-latency, but also things like [jump, turn around by 180°, disengage, fly only 90°], which is a massive problem on live

wait...after all the whine they finally return partially to wotlk style gameplay and now that people can't cry anymore about wotlk being the best they cry about why it took blizz so long to return to it?

anyways...
wotlk had a few strong points going for it, but it's mostly nostalgia driving people in its arms.
and it still had lots of its own problems, starting with bad design of classes/speccs and simply bad balance overall.

no offense intended, i wonder why people who love it that much don't simply jump on AT and try it themselves. it's a download of just 20gb.

How are they partially returning the wotlk playstyle? Also im talking about the flow of the game in wrarth that got shat on by the cata devs.

less cc, less buttons, less instants, less amount of burst cds, more casting.

needs a little bit more clarification.
do you happen to mean by that that you're able to pressure without cds?

This is golden, no more shitty life swaps, warrior charges through 5 walls and 7 pillars or unreliable guardian.

Im pretty sure that the Wotlk client that AT runs off of is actually different than the way it actually was in wrath. AT has their own balancing patches and they tweak the numbers on that server. It is NOT a copy and paste of 3.3 from wrath.
Ya know, i was born in west philadelphia. I spent most of my days on the play ground. Usually i just be chillin, relaxin, trying to act cool by shooting some b-ball at school. But on this one, terrible, dreary, horrid day, a couple of guys that were certainly up to no good starting making trouble.. I was the first one of course to step up and fight them back. Because of this, my mom got scared and made me move in with my aunt and uncle in bel-air.

On topic : Does this mean i wont get charged / sheeped / cloned / feared / hexed etc while behind a pillar / box / staircase / wall any more?

Yes, to an extent, but you will also see this happening to you more as you're punished easier. Sometimes the opposite happens, can i can't charge a healer clearly in LoS because he, or I are suffering the WoW engines restrictions, I doub't you'll feel much difference when it comes to CC, more when it comes to faking/kicking.

I've always wondered about that. I always thought I was just doing something wrong when disengage took me the wrong direction from where I wanted to go =/

#1 Concern with this is if it will affect shadowmeld mechanic for melding a cc, or if it will be like cyclone where the removal of instant clone made it so that I was unable to clone a mage to prevent his ring for the duration of cyclone . If so its a nerf to nightelf racial.

Otherwise, glad they're finally fixing the servers :)

Cata changed how GCD works to prevent GCD hacking. It is now server side, rather then client side. It leads to a whole bunch of lag related issues when it comes to it. I assume this is an attempt to counter this lag

Indeed, that was the reason Cata and beyond felt sluggish to all the old players.

Good change, now if only they fixed few game supporting systems to what they used to be. ( dispel system, etc )
