Surprised to see some of the games on there that are, but the fact that Aion is so high is quite surprising in itself.

Considering WoW gets like 70% of its subsciption base from Asia as well its not "THAT" surprising the Asian MMO is doing very well there.

Im also betting that of the 4 million Aion players there at least half of them played WoW and are just maintaing their subscriptions for no reason. WoW WILL soon take a chuck of playerbase loss over there due to Aion, whenever Blizzard decides to actually admit it we will see.

The big deal is whether the game will flop in the US / EU, which I expect, even though I dont want it to, I expect it will. 1 million max in the US and 2 million EU, unless blizzard releases 3.2 the way it looks right now in which case that will be a million and one.

But for a game that is only 6 months out the door it has alot of homeland support, which shows promise. WoW is aged and at least Koreans / Chinese get that old games powered by companies driven by profits instead of entertainment stop serving their purpose somewhere along the way.

I don't really see Aion flopping. Lineage 2 didn't totally flop, and Aion is a much, much better version of that game. 1.3 adds a lot of quests and the game has a great crafting system that can literally soak hundreds of hours if your devoted to it, which will appeal to a LOT of NA players.

The game does a much better job appealing to the NA casual playstyle than all the other asian games have.

well theres 400 points of crafting skill, you can push all crafts to 399 (easily and relatively cheap with vendors mats) but the last point can only be gained in a single one and is always connected to a friggin huge questline whereas the alchemy one is considered to be even impossible ^^

Easy to level but hard to master?

UNPOSSIBLE

Never heard of Dofus, really.
And when i looked on youtube of gameplay videos of it, i lost faith in humanity, even runescape is better.

I was laughing when everyone was suprised that Aion is such a good game, I mean look at Guild Wars, hands down had the most balanced and best PvP of any MMO out there. The only reason that didn't do as well is that there wasn't really ALL that much to do, lack of proffessions, and PvE content along with the fact that everything was instanced. Both of these are supported by NCsoft.

Honestly, it's either going to be Aion, Guild Wars 2 (in a couple years max) or Star Wars that is going to be the WoW killer.

The surprise wasn't at the goodness of Aion, rather its numbers. Coming anywhere close to WoW at outstripping other MMOs is an impressive feat.

Keep in mind that Aion has been live for 7 mo in Korea

Used to play F2P Korean grind games like Aion many years before wow.

1. Community in EU or America always whined the fact that everything came late to them.

2. Game was developed around pure grinding, not game mechanics

3. Very little skill was involved because it was ment to be flashy, not hard game.

Even tho, i saw few good things in those grind games..nolifes gets it all, casuals...fk the casuals.

THAT should be always the #1 prio in MMO games.

Oh the times, so sweet times.

I hope Aion will rock my socks, but if its anything like those normal grind fest games koreans produce, im out of there.

Seems the graph got taken down :( Rundown was that Aion has already outstripped Runescape and the French-version-of-runescape to take the #2 MMO spot at >3 mil subscribers already.

Yea I'm no stranger to Korean grindfest games (Helbreath, Ragnarok Online, etc), and I can definitely tell you that Aion isn't going to be NEARLY the grindfest to get to max level as other Korean MMOs. But let's be real here, World of Warcraft is a grindfest at max level, all MMOs are to some extent. It's just a question of what you're grinding. Dungeons and killing other players is a lot more acceptable to me (well personally it's mostly the later, dungeons can fucking suck it), compared to grinding the same monsters you were at 75% to max level.

There will never be a WOW KILLER like people claim everytime a new mmo is released... for example Warhammer the BIG WOW KILLER, hehe.

But Aion seems to be a good alternative if you have seen everything in wow.

Uhh WoW will kill itself soon. Also when the Star Wars MMO or w/e comes out every SW nerd will play it(aka 23456765445676 people) and im pretty sure theres more SW nerds than Blizzard. The reason WAR was a failure was 1) was shit 2) most mainstream people have never heard of Warhammer.

Nereva
08-05-2009, 07:45 AM
Warhammer was/is okay, but the Combatsystem is so fail. Stupid smashing of 2-3 Buttons, thats all. Every class is like Retpaladin. JUST KLICK WHATS RDY

It was really fun, but there was less skill than in wow. Warhammer could be really good, if they would copy the combatsystem from wow. With the CC, damage and heal, i mean. Because the world, the classes, the whole pvp is so much better than in wow. The battlegrounds are perfect.

Im still hoping, that there will be a big patch who will fix the awful combatsystem (LOL AT BUFFS ONLY UPDATING ONCES A SECOND, LOL AT "STAMINA"COMBATSYSTEM (its like that: You have 100 Stamina (maybe, i dont know) every move uses some stamina, after you used all your stamina you cant attack anymore and you die. i hate that awful system, i love mana, rage and energy from wow <3 )

EDIT: yes, the castbar, rofl. The castbar is so fail. It doesnt show the casttime right, sometime the spell dont go off. If you want to interrupt a spell, its random. You can stack some stats or skill something, so that the chance to interrupt is higher. But its shit, i hate that system.

Graph doesn't load for me =|

But I think I've seen it before anyway.

Aion is not like most other Korean MMOs. The devs repeatedly say it was designed for a global audience, and each patch seems to suggest that as they add more and more pve content and stuff. Leveling in 1.5 is supposed to be significantly easier and faster than in 1.0 (the beta version we are playing on test weekends).

We'll see... Aion will likely have a decent sized following here in the states.

Yea the graph is down, and I couldn't find it quickly anywhere else.

Gameplay wise Aion feels a LOT more like WoW than any Korean MMO I've ever played. The graphics and characters are more asian, of course, but everything else feels just like WoW for the most part. Skills, quests, leveling, etc.

Man, why are they all making something just so similar to WoW? ... Well, actually a game like WoW is better than a korean grind game, so that'll be okay ...

I really hope that Aion won't be a flop, too...
I would really like to test it, but I'm afraid of buying the PreOrder, because of bad experiences with PreOrdering ...
I preordered Age of Conan, played it like 5 hours, then quit ... Thats like paying for 10€ per hour ... shit

If you don't know if you should play it look at:
Veex/Veev's Blog about Aion compared to WoW (http://wowriot.gameriot.com/blogs/Ugly-Gnome/Aion-Why-you-should-and-shouldnt-play)

Alyea
08-24-2009, 08:32 AM
I'm refering to the playstyle ... Targetting, casting, movement, it seems all this is similar to WoW ... (I never tested Aion, so can't tell this for sure) ...
AoC for example was something really new, but unfortunately it was just crap and unfinished :(

Pharaun
08-25-2009, 01:19 AM
Because WoW has a really good, fairly fluid system. It works. You'd be insane not to copy it a lot.

Deccard
08-25-2009, 04:33 AM
Their are some differences, but in the essence it feels similar, yes.
Differences would be moving bonuses, strafing being a tad slower than running straight forward, of course flight and animations doing something ;)

Although I do agree that AoC sucked, people have to give a games a chance. My first character back in the day in WoW was a hunter, I got to level 26 got bored and quit the game for 2 months and came back with my friends. And loved WoW for the next 3 or so years.

Playing a game for 1 hour and already dismissing it especially at early levels probably isn't the wisest thing to do.

Aion picks up at around 10 with the Daeva cut scene, to me personally.
