View Full Version : how about guild wars?

first of all, sorry if this is in the wrong forum. but in a way, i think it's related to warhammer and here's my reason. recently, a lot of us who are thinking about dropping wow and playing warhammer have been asking for reviews on WAR. many of us are fed up with pvp in wow especially since blizzard balances a lot of things based on pve. many WAR players are saying that the strong point is that mythic based the game on pvp (rvr).
but a few WAR players also point out some of the negative aspects: namely too much zerging, not enough of a sense of individual accomplishment (arena rating and awards missing), and as of now, the buggy gameplay.
so how about guild wars? how does it compare to warhammer? I never really got into it but it seems to fit much of the criteria for a good game. It combines War's concentration and balance on PVP but also keeps the battles small (arena) so that individual contributions can be felt. Also, the game has been out for so long, that I would assume the bugs would mainly be ironed out.
has anyone played guild wars? what are your thoughts? i'm really interested in your opinions.
also, feel free to move this post to off topic if deemed inappropriate.

Guild Wars has been dead for a long time. WAR shares more similarities with DAOC than Guild Wars or WoW.
I played GW competitively from release until Nightfall, and it's been dead as an even mildly competitive game since then. There's far too many skills and classes and the overall game balance is constantly screwy - but I hear good things about upcoming GW2.

GW has 2 things over WAR the way I see it: balanced group pvp and a rated system based on such pvp. In WAR, there's litte skill can do if the enemy has twice your number to defend a keep and those keeps are the way to make your guild have something over other guilds.
I've played GW before they launched any expansion, and it was pretty balanced. I think it was the best pvp-axed mmo ever. But it suffers from the same problem as WAR : if you don't have friends to play with on a regular basis, it gets boring.
I'm not sure about the state of the game now, but with the expansions and less and less people playing, I woulnd't get back to playing it however.

thanks for the input.
part of the reason why i posted was to see why guild wars failed when it seemed to combine some good qualities of both wow and war.

I used to play guild wars. I quit and tried to come back atleast 2 times. Heres some of the problems.
You need every game to play pvp seriously.
To get into a good group you need rank. To gain rank you need to do HoH. To win HoH you need a good group.. So your forced to pug with baddies and win 1/10 games.
And from what I heard, they are completly ditching GW for GW2 which makes it pointless to even consider to start playing.

when I played GW I spent the entire time doing the linear pve instance progression thing, lol. Probably should've actually tried the pvp ;x

What progression? "Nice I hit 20 and had more than enough to buy the best armor stat wise in the game, now im going to farm for weeks to get the same armor that looks cooler"

It was like you finished 1 instance then you unlocked the next etc actually!

did that on a few toons, but I mostly pvp'd. Had every skill addon etc unlocked. Did lots of random and team arenas which were a blast.
Good points of GW pvp: you can change your setup at any time. You can play all classes and thus keep yourself from getting bored without grinding days or weeks to get a new toon ready to play. Character creation for pvp is instant. You can use skills from other classes so that you create uniqueness in your character, setups, exectuion. warrior with a dispel, assassin with an aoe snare, monk with a dodge stance, etc. There was an HoH build called Edge of Extinction bomb, and basically you made all these spirits and set up these traps and just nuke the fuck out the opposing team killing basically everyone instantly. Kinda funny. People were really clever in that game, much more so than "hey priest and mage can cc and drink enough to outlast or set up a bit of burst!" It'd be like if you ran into a spriest spike team in 5s and got slaughtered cause their timing was insane and they have infinite mana and VE heals (always a team I've wanted to play in WoW btw *sigh*)
Downfalls: no feeling of real accomplishment outside of titles. If you like gear, even as a means to look different, you won't like GWs. Certain skills are buffed to a point that it's kinda pointless to not take them, and there are so many skills that lots don't get used since you can only take 8 at a time. Auto targeting is nice, but no instants, even for melee, so must be catch the target to hit it. All this means is you can't chase someone and bash the hell out of them like melee does in WoW. New expansions bring new skills, which are purposely made better so you have to but the expansion to compete. People are really snobby about grouping.
Was a fun game though, played for a bit over a year, got like Rank 6 gladiator or something. The arena system was cool, you que up and get arena points that go to your title based on win streaks, so you try to group with the best players and come up with strong comps or counter comps to whatever is popular and just roll a bunch of people.
GW2 in my eyes has the potential to be amazing if they incorporate the good aspects of wow with the strong pvp balances of GWs. I hate to say it too, but the game would probably have a better shot of success with a monthly fee too because it gives them more money to constantly make the game we're playing better instead of just coming out with expansions all the time that only bring new skills.
Sorry for textwall

It is kinda too late to start playing guild wars. As Krieger said, the game died when Nightfall came out (or when GWWC2 ended imo). I thought that it was the most balanced MO until then.
Just FYI, some of the famous guilds (Warmachine, mangudai, mostly harmless etc) seems to play WAR on ST.

With no further tournaments, there is no reason to play GW competitively. The first 2 championships in Taiwan and Germany were amazing fun though. :)

eh? if you need lan tournaments to make a game worth playing why do only like 50 wow players participate in them out of 290929023902?

GW had the right idea with holding serious online tournys.

Not many people (even those who can afford it) are willing or have time to fly/drive around the country to compete at a chance to win a relatively small amount of money. If there was more sponsorship and corporate backing of WoW arena teams I'm sure you would see the LAN competitive player base explode.
Money talks basically.

that was my point, he was saying there was no reason to play GW competitively because of lack of tournaments when plenty of people play WoW competitively for ingame rewards
Kriegar

There's no playerbase to compete against left in Guild Wars, that's why. If playing for in game rewards against 50 other people is your thing, I guess it's fun. If you played WoW specifically for pvp and weren't competing in the tournaments, I'd also say there's little point in it.

you know how people complain "there is no one to queue against" when they are high rated?
imagine have 1/10 of the people queuing, i don't know how many people still play GW but i assume i am being generous with that number

Guild Wars would still be awesome if it weren't for those retarded expansions...

guild wars was like the arena without having to sit in bg's doing an honor grind. the only problem was that the rest of the game sucked & you couldn't do things like jump.
im probably going to switch to guild wars 2 when beta comes out in 2009. i'm finding that i have less & less time to honor grind so either permanent TR from blizz or i'm going to have to find another pvp game.

Guild Wars PvP was amazingly balanced, but it lacks the fluidity of WoW. Your character's movement is kind of jerky, the game uses auto-facing, and you can't jump or fall.
For actual competitive PvP, it was leaps and bounds ahead of WoW.

Full time TR would be amazing, only thing is no one would pvp on live.
