Since I'm retiring my mage from 2's and probably 3's (Rogue/Mage/Priest has become, I'm sad to say....boring.)

Has anyone considered the power of an AP / Frost mage in 5s (specifically a 2345 setup) ? I mean, you would lose the water elemental and ice barrier but with AP / PI (I know they don't stack, but back to back could be nice) with IV and Bloodlust/Heroism....along with PoM for added burst or an instant sheep to interrupt a heal.. Along with extra damage from crits and a significantly higher mana pool...

Here's the build that I was considering (Iceblock = Cold snap and Coldsnap = Icy Veins)

Thoughts?
I'm just theorycrafting here and welcome to (constructive) criticism.

The first thing that you should realize is that frost channeling will give you close to the same benefit as arcane mind. Also, over the duration of a match the WE will provide probably about 10 times more damage than AP, and the ranged frost nova provides much more burst potential than PoM could ever hope to muster.

Another problem is pushback, i know it doesn't absorb much but ice barrier is great when a warlock or hunter sticks their pet on you because it stops pushback on all spells.

I guess i just can't see this being a viable build because once you blow your bag of tricks it's gone, and 5s is all about lasting power.

On paper, AP+Frost sounds really good. I was thinking that it would be cool to go after the iceblock buff. Then I realized that a lot of a match you spend sheeping, you're not always dps. And building quick shatter combos is huge. Not to mention as the previous poster said, lack of ice barrier would stink for the spell pushback. I think full frost is going to be the most viable, MAYBE fire would work, blazing speed could be great and fire doesn't have to worry about spell pushback.
