Hey, i figured id post a little strategy i use when im mana burn racing another priest. (people from the battlegroup ruin are not allowed to read this).
When Mana burning another priest in an open area, the first thing to pop is fear(so you could possibly use it later in the race) when fear breaks cast shadowfiend. This will push back all of his spells allowing you a 2:1 ratio on mana burns. If he bubbles, instant dispell it. If he casts shadowfiend on you bubble:X. Make sure you never stop mana burning everything i listed is instant.
It seems alot of priests play line of sight with mana burn but i really like to just chain mana burn, i feel the person who is the aggressor normally wins. Let them know if they step into your line of sight you will mana burn there ass. I suppose this is mostly for 5v5, but we all know mana burn races can come anytime 2 priests confront eachother
Let me know if you guys got any other tricks:X!

It's interesting that you feel the aggressor is usually the one to win. I ALWAYS save my Scream for right after they use theirs, so I don't have to waste time (and suffering 1-2 more Mana Burns) by running up to them. If they run up to me and it's resisted, that's an extra 2 Mana Burns at the very least I have on them, and then I can Scream them back at the end of their next cast. If it's not resisted, I can trinket out and Scream right away anyway.
And I prefer to save Shadowfiend for when the Drain/Burn/Viper sprees are over, so they're less focused on how much mana I'll still have and the necessity to keep Burning it away. After all, as I'm sure you know, Drain Mana/Mana Burn/Viper Sting are incredibly cheap, and even if you have 500 mana left and the enemy Priest has 300, it's better to Burn him now because in a few seconds he'll have enough to Burn you back.
Edit: Hmm, perhaps our differing perspectives are based on our differing arena priorities. 5v5 seems to be yours, while 2v2 is mine. 5v5 is all about hitting hard, fast, and creating as much opportunity as possible from the chaos, while 2v2 is all about making every spell and moment count for much more.
Interesting stuff.

I rarely get the chance to just chaincast it away in 5v5. Warrior/paladin/mage/priest/warlock.
Ofcourse if I see the oppertunity and the enemy priest is just standing there, I'll manaburn him. But I wont focus on it fully and wont chase him. I'll try to LoS his manaburns though (while throwing instants etc), and even better if he just goes chasing me around, wastes some of his time and I can actually get off 1.5s casts with pillarhugging.
Basically Mana Burn is situational for me, not main game focus.

In a mana burn fight, I try to los their burn then pop out to burn them myself. I'll always get burns off before they can react to start burning again. Rinse and repeat.

I've found that it pays to be patient. I'll often try to start a burn as fast as I can, but if they run away or go to burn me back I play LoS and bide my time for a while. Often I can get a few burns off later while they're focused on healing their partner.
I've fought a few priests who were way too obsessed with burns that they neglected their partners almost entirely. Mana burn is immensely helpful but biding your time and taking control the fight is key too.

Basically, depending on your setup, it comes down to which priest has to come out of sight to heal more and then be more of a target to mana burn. Let's say it's 2v2, priest rogue vs priest rogue (holy priests). Obviously mana burns will come into effect but both priests do not have to be aggresive and can be passive waiting for them to heal and then make a move, others who just duke it out standing there will come down to who resists more. I also like to stand next to a pillar and do mana burn battles and right before they get a mana burn off, do shadoword death and then run away. Think it works.
