The best mage partner in 2's that can possibly have a chance at gladiator is with a rogue. Mage / Healer is lol and will get roflstomped by anything that can mana burn a mage, because a drained mage, is a useless mage.
Spec
17/0/44 (http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=of0VrobZZVVGIobxobqt)
Get Imp CS because druids are lame with their NATURE'S SWIFTLOL. If it weren't for druids, you could probably go 0/0/61 (http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=oZZiAGIkfxsiqt).
Gear
Get 5/5 Vengeful (http://www.wowhead.com/?itemset=724), 1850 Staff (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34540), PVP Silk Gear, Chaotic Skyfire Meta (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=34220), and farm some badges so you can epic gem your gear. You can use the Voodoo Trinket (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=33829) or lightning capacitor (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=28785), whatever it takes to blow stuff up fast.
Add ons
Afflicted (http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info8063-r516.html) to see enemy cooldowns
eCastingBar (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/5056/) or any castbar addon, doesn't matter
Improved Camera (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/5098/) increases the max distance you can see
Debuff Filter (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/3574/) very useful, shows focuses, target's, player's buffs + debuffs wherever you want and filters out crap you don't need like "MISERY or RENEW" while you instantly see stuff like "SOUL LINK" or "LEADER OF THE PACK (lol)"
Bongos2 (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/2003/) just make a bar full of important cooldowns and put it somewhere noticable
Pitbull (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/7738/) change your UI frames because it makes us feel more unique and less conformed to blizzard! No seriously, change your UI to something better please
MikScrollingBattleText (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/3395/) Technically you can use the default blizzard one, but you won't be cool
OmniCC (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/2775/) works with bongos2 and DebuffFilter to show cooldowns and time left on CCs, very important for sheeps and iceblock
Proximo (http://wow.curse.com/downloads/details/8291/) to see who you're fighting, also good for targeting
Proxdim works with proximo to show diminishing returns on CCs, I'll update when Proxdim comes out with a 2.4 version.

Most Common Matchups
Warrior / Druid
Do not sap the warrior because the warrior will just break it and you just owned your sheep's DR. Mage has to solo the warrior, and since the 2.4 druid nerf, the rogue can help dps the warrior as well. Save your cooldowns until the druid comes out. When druid pops out, have your rogue get on him while you sheep the warrior. This is situational because the druid can sometimes see this coming, so the druid might pop out already with heals and abolish poison on himself and run away. In this case, just continue nuking the warrior and laugh as the druid ditches his dead partner. OmniCC with DebuffFilter will help countdown the sheep timers to get the full benefit of sheeps. The rogue has to know what he's doing or else he'll get kited by the druid forever. Once the kidney shot lands, blow a shatter combo and imp CS the druid, while trying to finish him off. To CC the warrior, I sheep 10s, sheep 5s, nova 8s, and you should count down the Proxdim DR timers to rinse lather and repeat. Blinds will have to be saved for warrior trinkets, or if the warrior blows trinket already, you can blind the druid because they usually blow their trinket on 5pt kidneys. Another thing to point out, don't get feral charged, because you just owned your partner.
Warrior / Pally
This matchup is a joke. You could even win this as 33/28/0 (http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=of0VfRbdrhzbZVgrzcbcR) fire spec. Spell steal sacrifices and nuke the warrior. If you can see a potential burst coming, cs lock the pally and burn the warrior down. If not, sheep the pally > trinket > blind. Force the bubble and ice block through the duration of it, you can even sheep the warrior if you want, he's going to get full heals anyways. Once bubble is off, you can cs, sheep, sheep, whatever the pally and kill the warrior. You can even kill the pally instead of the warrior after bubble.
Warrior / Shaman
Kill Shaman, CC Warrior. This matchup is a pain. Invis off the start of the fight and have the rogue open on shaman, summon the pet to break invis and shatter combo the shaman if possible. CCing the warrior is a lot like CCing the warrior / druid fights, except there are shocks and groundings that own you. Spellstealing earthshield is a waste because they can just reapply it. Blind the warrior when the mage is out of cc options, and continue killing the shaman. If you can imp cc right after a big nuke to prevent the NATURE'S SWIFTLOL, then you should be able to take him down.
Warrior / Priest
I can't say that I've seen too much of these, but I can assume these can possibly be common. The warrior has no bop, freedom, sacrifice, or poison abolishes. He has mending, renew, shield, pain sup. Just nuke the warrior and laugh. The priest can't do much unless the priest is pillar avoiding the cc's, but still, it's not like a DRUID is healing + ccing.
Mage / Rogue
This is like fighting rogue/mage/priest in 3's, except no priest, so the point is to kill the mage. The fight starts, and you'll either see a mage, or nothing. Either way, you should invis and have your rogue open on the mage, so you can summon pet out of invis to shatter the mage. If their mage is also invis, then nova him out and laugh at him while's he stuck thinking whether to blink out into a cheap shot or take the lances. Save your CS for Poly, because your rogue would never allow them to cast any frostbolts. This mirror match is about surviving the other rogue while dealing as much damage to the other mage.
Shadow Priest / Rogue
Double dps against double dps is usually a race to see who dies first, no outlasting at all. Invis in the beginning and have the rogue open on the priest and summon pet out of invis to shatter combo. The priest should be near dead if not dead, and laugh as their rogue tries to catch up in damage on either of you. A well timed imp cs could own a priest pretty bad since they can't shield, psychic scream, or silence. If the rogue jumps you and the shatter doesn't go off, your rogue can still do more damage to the priest than their rogue on you, and if the rogue jumps your rogue, spam sheep the rogue and finish off the priest after that shatter combo. Crippling poison on the priest should be enough so that the priest doesn't LOS you.
Rogue / Druid
Hard. No point in invis, just take the cheap shot because it will eventually happen. Blink the cheap shot and double dps the rogue. Trinket kidney shots and Iceblock the cloaks. Stick on the rogue and attempt to blow him up, rogues have no plate or defensive stance. If they go for your rogue, you can free frostbolt the rogue, just watch for the feral charges. Attempting to kill the druid isn't likely to happen, because their rogue will eventually kill you and you wouldn't be able to do anything to the druid (who is LOSing your crippled legs the whole time) anyways.
Rogue / Rogue
Not fun. If they're both human, even less fun. You will want them to go for you, because if they go for your rogue, you're pretty useless vs twinket + cloak of skill. You will be sapped, your rogue will die a miserable death and you're left fighting one rogue, because the other one is dancing. SO let's say they get on you, you get cheap shotted and blink into a ks that you trinket and try to kite as long as possible. They cloak and you ice block to prevent yourself from getting owned. This is a double dps vs double dps, so it's a race to see who dies first. Your rogue has to dish some serious damage along with you assisting him while kiting the rogues. Again, this is a race to kill someone first. Your rogue has to be prepared to not get owned.
Warlock / Paladin
Kill the Paladin. If you even look at the warlock, the pally will give him sacrifice, and it's there goes your CC plans. Just full force nuke the pally. CS the fears and nuke some more. You will get spell locked, and you will have to play around it. Do not sheep the warlock because their pets are lame. Once the pally bubbles, Ice Block and vanish or something to run away. You can finish off the pally right after. This match isn't supposed to be as easy as it sounds, but that's how you need to do it.
Warlock / Priest
You will probably lose. You can't sheep priest due to SW: Death AND the felhunter, you can't sheep the warlock due to felhunter and dispels from the priest. The warlock will tank like a madman, and you will rot away from dots. Best chance is to sap the warlock and kill the priest. CS the warlock fears and pray you and the rogue will do enough damage to the priest. Spell lock will own you, so don't frostbolt into one. A well timed cloak will own them. Priest will mend, renew, shield, and pain sup. You will have to nuke through it while trying to avoid fears and eating through dots. It helps to ice block fears + dots, and /cancelaura to immediately jump back into the fight. Your rogue will have to interrupt the priest heals. Worst case is if the pet gets you into combat, and sap isn't an option, or if the fight lasts longer than 2 psychic screams, because psychic screams will own the rogue.
Warlock / Druid
You will lose. You can't sheep anything, you will get spell locked, and you will die. Do not kill the warlock, do not kill his pet, kill the druid. Have rogue open on warlock along with you, but don't blow cooldowns. The druid will have to pop out and you will both have to get the druid. If you cs the fears, you will lose the chance to imp cs NATURE'S SWIFTLOL. You can try to dodge the fears or trinket or ice block, but you have to kill the druid. Most likely, this is what will happen, "Druid goes to 5%, Druid healthstones, then Druid casts NATURE'S SWIFTLOL. GG"
