This would probably be more something fun to do on the side when your teammates weren't online, but I think a random team arena ladder for 2v2 3v3 and 5v5 could be a lot of fun.

In Warcraft 3 Random Team was actually played by more people than arranged team and was something fun to do when trying to a new strategy or if you just felt like owning up some scrubs.

How it would work:

You would be matched with a partner of a similar random team rating and against two opponents of similar rating. Obviously, the high the combined rating of each of your opponents, the more rating you would receive for a win and less you would lose for a loss.

q: what if i get matched with another class that doesn't work well with mine?

a:Yes, you could be matched into a double healer team or a double dps team, but in theory that will happen to you as much as it would everyone else so it shouldn't make too much of a difference.

q:"But we already have scrimmages, this is the same thing"

a: No, it is not. Scrimmages are stupid because people don't take them seriously and half the time you end up in a 2v1 match. There is actually something on the line in these matches, so people will show up join them with the intention of winning. Also something would have to be put into the match making system where a match wouldn't start unless all the players from each team had already been chosen.

Yes it would. Double DPS is entirely viable, double healer is not. Since the odds are about the same for either matchup, a healer would be guaranteed to lose about 37.5% of their games and tie about 12.5% (that is when the other side also gets 2 healers, the only healer that has a chance of winning such a matchup is the priest due to mana burn).

As a result, no healer would queue for that, or at least not seriously.

Yep, what Molp said.

It would have to attempt to match ratings and pair intelligent class combos together.

Could be lots of fun though.

It would be rather unfair. Not every class can go with any other. Warriors require a healer or CC. Healers need DPS. Mages work with any partner, as do warlocks and shadow priests (minus warriors of course)

You can't really say a double healer team vs anything or a double warrior vs healer + DPS team would work as effectively as say a caster with any other class.

I mess around a lot in 2v2 playing matches as double warrior, warrior mage, warrior hunter, warrior warlock; and trust me none of them work very well against decent players. I can hold up at 1800-1900 rating from gear alone, once you run into equally geared people you cannot win.

If it was 10v10 on the other hand, that could be amusing. Of course not as serious competition but the fun factor could be there.

That would be fun, only if they had set group makeups say 2dps+ healer for 3s and 1 or 2 healers for 5s

Prefer rated warsong though
