This would probably be more something fun to do on the side when your teammates weren't online, but I think a random team arena ladder for 2v2 3v3 and 5v5 could be a lot of fun.
In Warcraft 3 Random Team was actually played by more people than arranged team and was something fun to do when trying to a new strategy or if you just felt like owning up some scrubs.
How it would work:
You would be matched with a partner of a similar random team rating and against two opponents of similar rating. Obviously, the high the combined rating of each of your opponents, the more rating you would receive for a win and less you would lose for a loss.
q: what if i get matched with another class that doesn't work well with mine?
a:Yes, you could be matched into a double healer team or a double dps team, but in theory that will happen to you as much as it would everyone else so it shouldn't make too much of a difference.
q:"But we already have scrimmages, this is the same thing"
a: No, it is not. Scrimmages are stupid because people don't take them seriously and half the time you end up in a 2v1 match. There is actually something on the line in these matches, so people will show up join them with the intention of winning. Also something would have to be put into the match making system where a match wouldn't start unless all the players from each team had already been chosen.
