Ahhhhhhhhhh I'm trying to draw the first one you posted like looking up then looking down but mine doesn't look good at all and i can't figure out why!!!

Proportions maybe?

I think it might be the eyes too. You do those so well t.t

Aesa
09-25-2009, 04:12 PM
actually I think it might be line darkness/thickness, I used like the same for all my lines but on closer inspection yours are really varied

actually it's probably alot of things :D

Try doing this first.

When I first started learning to draw anime I would always start with the eyes and dry to get the lines perfect. It's really tedious and you end up messing up the proportions, on top of a lot of other things.

Once I learned to layout the drawing and just scribble, everything became a lot easier because you can visually gauge where all the lines should be in all that mess, and make educated guesses on proportions.

Having the sketch lines help a lot for a lot of people, and when i read "How to Draw" books, especially the anime ones, they never even talk about this, and they really except you to know proportions off the bat.

Making a mess is a lot more fun and a lot more manageable imo because if you start with a mess you won't get so frustrated on the work because you didn't spend a lot of time in a small part of a drawing, and you get a lot more done, even if you don't finish.

Plus, if you ever work with other mediums, making a mess (like with charcoal and conte) is fucking fun :3

Then you just start adding in darker lines (still they are kinda light though as you are still sketching).

The shape starts coming out.

Normally I don't do any erasing before this point. I think it's more important to get the overall image on the page before you start worrying about details.

Obviously I'm being really loose about my lines, so it's not an issue for you to be really loose and freeflowing when you're drawing as well :) The most loose the better!

at work now will try when i get home =)

i noticed like, it's hard for me to explain it but you'll probably know what i'm talking about, when you draw a "line", especially if it's curved, sometimes you draw alot of little connected lines- for example on the eyes, there's alot of circles. Is that important/why is that? Does that indicate for you in the future how thick to make the line?

btw when I say "you" i meant like, everyone haha

Anyway ya I guess so start with proportions first, then worry about line thickness/darkness, then shading last? Did I forget anything?

EDIT: lol you posted in between, that was in response to 3:21- same questions still apply though <3

All the lines used are basically just guide lines, or "searching" lines. You put something on the paper which is a very quick guess on what you want your line or shape to be. After you throw down a couple, you can choose which line you drew to be your actual line, and darken/work on that line.

As you get better, you'll use less of those guide lines as you'll naturally know where to place things and the shape they will be. Personally I still use some guidelines but it's not as much as the examples I just showed.

Drawing has a kind of process like writing a paper. You brainstorm, free write, then clean it up. So basically as you are drawing, you just want to cover the page with whatever, then start making shapes out of it. Once you have a solid linework, that's when you want to get into shading and such.

EDIT: LMFAO ALEXEK!

Sloppy (and LAZY!) shading.

Recently I'm liking this style of shading on these quick sketches. I think it adds to the cuteness :3

And basically you just clean up the lines from there, and you got yourself a nice little drawing!

I love going to the zoo. Just normally don't have the time and finances to get myself and last all day at the zoo.

Or maybe that's an excuse to not meet people online.
